  1. Arbeiter Zeitung (Vienna) Loose translations with the help of Google. Superconcert of the Season (June 6) The rock giants were tired and wanted to never go back on tour. However, after the overwhelming success of their performance last August in London's Knebworth Stadium, the urge to play again returned to Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. And after tenacious negotiations, the organizers managed to include Vienna as one of the twelve concerts planned for Europe. On June 26th the heavy rockers will move into the Wiener Stadhalle with their two and a half hour show. The show, which brought out 150,000 spectators last year, included the early hits "Whole Lotta Love" and "Immigrant Song", as well as "Stairway to Heaven" and numbers from the latest LP In Through the Out Door. Although the Zeps will be coming with three tractor trailers and several tonnes of lights, as you would expect from real rockers, the show will be technically simple. "Sex symbol" Robert Plant and guitar wizard Jimmy Page will be putting on the show. Jimmy Page will have a laser attached to his violin bow to point through the hall. Led Zeppelin is actually the only band from the old garde that has had the same members since 1968, which makes them musically strong. In his private life Robert Plant has had some bad luck. First he had a car accident, then his three year old son died from an infection. This European tour is quite possibly the last of the supergroup. You shouldn't miss this concert. The Zeps last played the Vienna Stadthalle seven years ago. Photo (June 26) Rave reviews preceed Led Zeppelin who play the Vienna Stadthalle today at 19.30 as part of the "Musical Summer" [fest]. In addition to their new "American" music Zep will also play hits such as "Whole Lotta Love". Turmoil and Rejoicing for Superstar Zeppelin (June 28) Nearly two-thirds of the show were already over, and Jimmy Page just had just started into a quieter guitar number. Suddenly a bang tore the relative silence and smoke fogged the stage. Led Zeppelin dropped their instruments and hastily left the stage, and it was clear that this wasn't part of the show. What really happened, was made clear a few minutes later when the German organizer Fritz Rau told the baffled audience "Some idiot threw a firecracker and hit Jimmy Page in the face". Cries of resentment rose from the crowd as the culprit who seems to have screwed up the concert was revealed The old rock veterans put on a show, as only hard rock royalty survivors could. "Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll". Singer Robert Plant moaned, screamed, yelled into the microphone, bulged his lips, spoke with his hips - rooted, primeval. Guitarist Jimmy Page, however, was the freak, miles away, whose guitar runs took the crowd to higher spheres. Bassist and drummer stay in the background. Technical effects were only a distraction. 5. Not to beat a dead horse, but... The caption under the photo from the article is: Members of Montana band the Frantics are pictured here with Yardbirds members. From left to right, Chris Dreja, Don Mock, Jack Mills, Gary Eidet, Jimmy Page, Max Byfuglin and Kim Sherman. Below is a photo of the Frantics from June 1967 (only two members are the same - Max Byfuglin and Kim Sherman). They also look older in the photo. What I'm now wondering is if whether the Yardbirds even played in Wichita in 1967.
  6. Jeff Beck: "Jimmy took over on bass and it was awful. He really wasn't a bass player. He didn't have the physical, or...he didn't have the right approach for bass".
  7. I'm not disputing that the Frantics opened for the Yardbirds, or that the Yardbirds played in Wichita in 1967, but I think, based on what the Frantics themselves stated in the article, that the photos are from an August 15th, 1966 show in Wichita. From the article : The Frantics were touring with the Yardbirds during the time they stopped in Great Falls, and a written recollection compiled by the band includes some interesting tales. Page had just joined the Yardbirds in June of 1966 and was relatively unknown. It was also only a few months before Beck was fired from the band in October of the same year. “Jimmy Page was a last-minute fill in bassist,” said the band’s recollection, “and we had previously never heard of him. We recalled how enthusiastic Jimmy was about his idea of playing double-lead guitar with Jeff Beck.” One common theme is the sharing of equipment between the bands. At a gig in Wichita, Kan., the day after they played Great Falls, the band recalled: “During their set, we remember Jim McCarty shouting to Jack, our drummer, “Jock, I’ve got no sticks.” Jack provided him several of his own. We shared the Vox equipment and Gary blew out Jimmy Page’s Super Beatle Amp, which didn’t faze Jimmy, as they had replacements.” Although I have no info on the photo below it shows Jimmy with the same coat as in the first photo above, with Jeff Beck sitting next to him . So the coat would be part of Jimmy's wardrobe from 66. How can you be sure that the Frantics show was in 67?
  8. The new footage starts at the 16 min mark...
  9. Based on the recent article in the Great Falls Tribune re the Montana '66 show, I would say these photos are from August 15th, 66. The Frantics were the opening band. They may also have played Wichita in October 1967.
  10. Wow! I can't believe it...new Yardbirds footage! Chaville France, April 30, 1967. Amazing, thanks for posting that.
  11. Nice find Sam! Too bad about the watermark. Are there any more?
  12. Ad for Oct 18th, 68 gig at the Marquee billed as "The Yardbirds". Note the "Old Friends in October" section where they are called "The New Yardbirds" and the group members are listed.
  13. Marquee ad for Feb 68 with Robert Plant playing on the 8th and the 23rd. John Bonham may have been with the band at this point so the 23rd date is when he might have met Tim Rose for the first time leading to his future gig in July (pure speculation).
  14. Marquee ad for July 68 with Tim Rose on the 16th (with John Bonham?)
  15. Two new ads for the Kinetic Playground in 69 from Northwestern U.
  16. Found this on a Facebook site, any ideas to where this is from? I'm thinking US early 69 due to the price and reference to the New Yardbirds. Also a cover charge usually refers to a club/bar. Could also be fake (reference to New Yardbirds, the line about the earplugs, and the need to put "Heavy Blues Rock" make me suspicious).
