Long post - deep breath! Been working on it since the summer when it started to become apparent that Jimmy Page was not going to deliver the 50th Anniversary Live boxed set that we all hoped for. Well, if he wasn't going to do it, then I was certainly going to give it my best shot! My starting point was that for 1969-1973, we have near-complete live shows for each year: Paris Olympia from 1969 Royal Albert Hall from 1970 BBC Paris Theatre from 1971 How The West Was Won from 1972 Madison Square Garden from 1973 As the years 1975-1980 are only represented by the DVD's highlights from Earls Court '75 and Knebworth '79, I decided to concentrate purely on these years. Unfortunately, as much as I love Led Zep (they have been my favourite band for years) we all know that during the second half of their career their performances were sometimes inconsistent. Plant had vocal issues, Page had certain other issues and even Bonham could have a dodgy night. I knew that if I was to construct a live album for each of these years that was anywhere near definitive or near the standard required for an official release, it was going to involve a lot of editing. Plant's vocal squeaks and cracks needed sorting, Page's flubs needed to be addressed and a few band timing issues needed smoothing out. If I was to make an edit within a song and use a better performance from another night then I also wanted to match the EQ, reverb and stereo separation. Some soundboards varied so much in these areas! What I've ended up with is a 2cd or 3cd soundboard compilation from 1973, America and Earls Court 1975, America 1977, Knebworth 1979 and Europe 1980 to approximate a complete show from each of these tours/shows. I've also done the same for L.A. 1977, trying to use only Mike Millard's recordings wherever possible. I know they are audience recordings but they are so good and so legendary that even Page saw fit to use one for a menu on the official DVD set. I've sprinkled a few extras here and there just for kicks. As a bonus I've created an alternative version of The Song Remains The Same soundtrack. This one comes from my frustration at what we were officially given for the 50th Anniversary. The flawed 2007 version of The Song Remains The Same was reissued, despite Page having the opportunity to finally give the soundtrack the treatment it deserved - for example, by using the superior 1976 album versions of some of the songs and ditching the film versions with their awkward edits that sometimes even added or took away beats of the bar. A complete Black Dog would also have been nice! This is the version I wish had been issued. Many thanks to The Garden Tapes website which provided invaluable help. I've included a compilation (entitled 1973-1980) of songs which were some of my favourite performances but which didn't meet the standard I was looking for in terms of a near-perfect performance or sound quality. This compilation consists of 6 cds of honourable mentions, mostly soundboards but with a few top quality audience recordings that compete in terms of performance. Oh, and Volume 10 consists of 3 DVDs: the 1st is my version of what an official Earls Court compilation could look like, the 2nd my presentation of the Seattle gig with better sound + some extras and the 3rd is my version of what an official Knebworth compilation could look like. Note: If the edit I've made is just for a beat or two, or for a couple of seconds then I have not listed which show it has come from (there are many!) but if it is a large section of the song then I have detailed the source. The acoustic set was always very enjoyable; even with the dry audio mix, Bonham's drumming is awesome throughout (is there a better Over The Top?) and Page performs one of his finest Stairway solos. However, sounboards are in abundance. These 3 pieces of 8mm film represent the best of the 1980 footage and are from LedZeppelin.com. Munich is particularly enjoyable with Plant in fine voice. The Promos section consists of a) all the bits of broadcast film I could find that were used as official promos for songs on VH1 and MTV in the 80s and 90s which did not turn up on the 2003 DVD set, b) all the complete songs synced together from 8mm footage and bootleg recordings also found on Led Zeppelin.com and c) a wonderful fan-made edit (thank you, Rainson Zeppelin - yours is the superior version) of No Quarter that combines the superior Soundtrack album version with the film version and film footage in a very satisfying way! I felt I just had to include it as I probably enjoy watching it more than almost any other Led Zeppelin performance. This is the one! Once you have all 10 volumes (30 discs in total), I truly believe that you have all you need from 1973-1980 as a regular Zep fan. If this was released in a similar fashion to the Pink Floyd Early Years boxed set, it could be presented as the final word on this period of their live career. Or that was the idea, anyway! They barely made a false move from 1968-1972. Almost every concert is a winner. You should have them all as you lot probably know! It is definitely harder navigating through 1973-1980 and this 30 disc box set came from a desire of mine that all began when I heard my first Zep boots back in 1993: BBC '71, Destroyer '77 and Zurich '80. I hope it helps new fans wade through the tapes and provides old fans with a solution to the problem of there being no official 50th anniversary live box set from Jimmy Page. Enjoy!

This is my 3rd and I Final take on this and I swear I won't plague the Forum with another one of these, haha. If you've followed or contributed in any way to my previous two takes, you may recall what motivated me to do this. If not, here's a quick summary. Curiosity got me asking, of all the Live songs Zeppelin did, what do I have in my library...and just how many songs did they perform live; 58. This led me to realize I've been living under an internet rock for a very long time. There are so many unreal zeppelin websites that I could not have done this without. Black Beauty was the most relevant by far, ditto this Forum. The music and content between those two sites was an unbelievable resource. A huge thanks to devoted Zep Fans who offered insights and thoughts as I took on this ~2.5 year task. Then there's sites like The Garden Tapes by Eddie Edwards; such masters level devotion to the official live content. And other detailed sites like the Plantations website, the site that itemized cover songs they did, etc. So much good info out there that helped me tackle this project, thanks and kudos to all. So here it is, my final cut at Zeppelin's Best Of Live Performances. The biggest difference from before is the influence of the 2003 DVD songs I finally got onto mp3, thanks to Xolo1974. For these (and the other official release songs) I've embedded into the file the reference date/location of the performance; thanks again to the high detail of The Garden Tapes work. A few new Heartbreaker and Dazed versions made it in as well as a few other recommendations from Forum Folks. There's also a lot more B-sides as many recommendations couldn't be left off. I'd like to put another big shout out to Michael Fry who offered his unreal work from his 50th Anniversary Box Set efforts (see his forum post) not to mention his editing advice via the Audacity application. With it I've been able to make so many edits, most of which were tinkering with Plantation intros and outros to songs. But it also helped with so many other small things that improved the listening experience; often a 30+ minute effort to improve less than 30 seconds of song, haha. Between those and a lot of advice, thoughts, feedback, etc. Mike's fingerprint is on this a bunch! Note that this project focused more on song quality, as some muffled audience versions were good but sounded too much like someone was snuffing out my speakers with a pillow. So I did focus heavily on official releases, soundboards or very good audience recordings. Between their live content and cover tunes, there's over 81 different songs. But when you consider the multiple versions of their major hits and the 15 B Sides, this massive seven set 125 song "concert" compilation comes in at over 18.5 hours of some seriously sweet Zeppelin listening. Some songs are referenced by their official release CD/DVD. Some songs are referenced by their well known concerts which I pulled several songs from. The remainder are referenced directly with their location and date. Hopefully this is easy to follow. The below can let ya put this together yourself, and then even modify it to fit your fav song preferences. The difference between Take 2 of this project and Take 3 mostly shows itself in Set G, as two more songs got moved/added in here while some others got replaced and/or got moved to the B sides. Overall, there’s a lot of songs and each version tends to be long. This set now clocks in at just over four and a half hours culminating in a grand finale of some serious tunes! I had to edit Black Country Woman and Hot Dog together. I liked the immediate start of Hot Dog, but again, my mp3 player's pregnant pause was ruining things. For similar reasons G25 & G 26 are also one track, you'll see why with how I've edited them. I liked how 1977s G12 sets up 1975s G13. NQ is such an artsy concert song. So many versions sounds unique at first, which didn't make selecting a few 'best' versions for this project easy. I quarreled over a dozen versions, listening to them repeatedly for a week; and at 25-30 mins each, it was an undertaking, haha. I may have gotten caught in a Zep vortex, but I did finally see some similar themes in the versions, which helped reduce it to the few in this 'concert'. In this set I merged the first half of Destroyer's NQ with the June 11 show that was cut off. I did later found the full recording, but preferred the combo as it reduced 2 versions into 1 while making a long and epic NQ. I also did a Stairway combination in this set. I think it comes off really cool, but you'll have to judge for yourself. Yes, there’s 2 versions of WLL in this one set. The 1980 version, however, is so different from all of the others, that G14 and G29 are hardly the same song…and I spaced them out by over 2 hrs, so I hope it’s not too much WLL. Lastly, I had another version of The Crunge in my pile of songs I liked, but had no place left for it to go. So I decided to extend the final WLL by adding it to the Crunge portion of the song. I don’t expect most will like it, but it is nice to have the final song of the long final set of this massive concert to be a bit longer than just 14 minutes. I’ve been listening to many versions of all of their songs for over two years now and am still not sick of it. It shows just how solid, creative and variable these guys were. If you do start a project, I strongly recommend good record keeping from day 1. A few versions I didn’t record which concert they were from…it took me forever to figure it all back out. I’m open to feedback on this project of mine. The foundation of it is shown below, however, I still have some work to do on it and nothing is cemented in yet. So I’d like some feedback from the wizards of this site. What started as a curios “Do I have all of their live songs?”, has turned into a quest to create a best of, massive Led Zeppelin “concert” of each of their live performed songs. For now, I’ve listed my cut of their best live performances in alpha order below. I’d like to thanks Bonzo_fan (Ranking the 1977 Shows, and 1975 shows, and...), Michael Fry (50th Anniversary Box Set), and also everyone who chimed in on their posts. I’ve dug into a lot of concerts and songs you all have specifically mentions as being good. They’ve influenced this best of compilation. Ok, I “ramble on” a lot, so feel free to skip these next paragraphs and just go straight to the songs. I was surprised by a few findings. One, I first appeared to be missing roughly 30 live songs in my CD catalogue, between the official releases and my few boots. Two, most of their latter 3 albums were never performed; oh the humanity!! (sorry for that, but it is a musical tragedy) Three, some songs were only ever done once. And four, a handful of songs were only done for ~5ish gigs (Levee, Wonton, etc) or were only ever partially played (Crunge, Rover, etc). In the end I was only missing 14 live performances from my collection. We truly are in a great digital era, where nearly every Zep concert is searchable on line. I was quite shocked to be honest. I mean, in 1968, why would someone record a fan based or soundboard based Zeppelin concert? You wouldn’t know these guys were going to pan out. And it’s not like it would have been easy either. Technology was so big and clunky, I mean how did you even do it discretely? Regardless, I’m thankful. My search also dug up a lot of non-Zep songs they only performed live. I assume they were all covers, but maybe some were Zeppelin revitalized songs, like most of the first album. Who knows? But like any legit fan, I collected those along the way. I’m sure I didn’t get them all, but I picked up over 20 songs, which I intend on including in this “concert”. I think I like the historical accuracy by including them; because it’s something they did do a lot live. Not to mention it makes my “concert” longer. Who doesn’t want an epically long Zeppelin concert? Well, maybe not the fans at Knebworth (who apparently waited outdoors for a very long time to see all the concerts), but definitely the rest of us. They will also increase the song variety, as I couldn’t tear myself away from including multiple versions of some of my fav songs. How does one decide that TSRTS Stairway is much better than Destroyer’s Stairway, or Eddie Listen Stairway? I couldn’t do it, so they’ll all make the cut, as they differ so much. The same will go for various versions of SIBLY, WLL, CB, HMMT, and Heartbreaker for sure. So these ~20 cover tunes will keep the variety going. Including some of the different versions noted above, this “concert” is going to be big. It’s verging on over 90 songs and will be well over 5 hours long. So I'm going to organize it into three "acts". They won't necessarily be in chronological order, but Act 1 will have more earlier material with Act 3 being a bit later. Each act will sort of start like each of their concerts (if I can) with 1,2,3, punches, have ~2 encores, and be filled with one of the multiple versions (STH, WLL, SIBLY, etc. ) I couldn't bear to cut. And like I said, to prevent them from getting too repetitive, each Act will be filled in with those ~20 cover songs. I'm hoping it’ll result in a great listen with a lot of rockin ups and some bluesy downs! After reviewing a lot of boots, I appear to be drawn to sound quality first, then the best version. As a result, a lot of the performances below are from the official releases: BBC Sessions, HTWWW, TSRTS, and Celebration Day. Familiarity has skewed me as well, so a lot of performances from 1977s Destroyer have made the cut. I’m not incl practices as they’ve never sounded that great to me, such as Night Flight (which sucks as I was really looking fwd to finding that one live). I really want this full, best of “Concert” to be a charge to listen to, from start to end. It’s hard to classify some songs. Travelling Riverside Blues? Was it really live? Kinda. Was it on any studio albums? Kinda. Honestly, I nearly cut this one. But I like it, so I included it. I’ve concluded long ago that you cannot really classify Led Zeppelin. They were too creative. They don’t fit into any one box, and a song like Riverside is an example of that. Got any favorite versions of their live performances? That are also of good quality? I’d love to hear of them.

Just uploaded a re-edited DVD of the Earls Court shows on Guitars101. Just type "Led Zeppelin Best of Earls Court 75 DVD re-edit guitars101" into Google or PM me for a link. There's also an mp4 version if you prefer. Both DVD and mp4 versions now work great on VLC media player. All sync issues that cropped up in my first version when played on a computer should now be fixed. I've selected the best performance of each song from the 24th/25th May shows that circulate. Improvements include: - a better audio mix of the opening numbers that's more sympathetic to Plant's voice (which always took a few songs to warm up in 1975); - I've smoothed out the edits which make a complete Going to California and That's The Way; - you can finally hear the backing vocals in Tangerine which I've boosted using the night of the 18th; - no official footage from the Led Zeppelin DVD has been used - a few of the vocal flubs have been fixed so it's closer to what an official release could sound like.
