A random observation I made last night.....Is it me or are there even more commercials on television these days? I'm not a big tv watcher, but the last few times (as soon as I turn the set on) I've had to flip through maybe 20 channels or more to find ANY show that wasn't airing a commercial break. I know years ago the FCC over here had rules (at least for broadcast tv) but I guess anything goes now.

I'd be curious in a given hour what the actual programming time is. Just curious if anyone that does watch a lot of tv has noticed a big uptick in commercial breaks or if it's me? missy

It's definitely not just your observation Missy. My mom and I feel the same way too. I don't watch much T.V these days because of University but in the case of those T.V shows I actually do watch, the duration of ads per show seems to be at least 15 minutes. And get this, once while watching re-runs of "Caroline In The City", the ads not only lasted for around 20 minutes during the entire show but with the airing of the last ad, the network conveniently forgot to air the last 5 minutes of the show with credits airing straight away after the last commercial break!

Why? What did I miss while I was away the last couple of days?

I'd like to offer a not-so-random hello to Missy and Kiwi! Haven't seen you two here in a while...thanks for dropping in.

Hiya Strider!

Nice to see you too! :D I'm glad that at least someone around here remembers me :P

It is good to stop by at least occassionally to post. I guess University work is preventing me from dropping by and posting frequently like I used to in the past. But it's good to be back at least for a while! :)

Edited to add: I (for one) enjoy threads like "This Or That" and "Word Association". I only come to this forum occassionally to take a break from my studies. The last thing I want is to get caught up in all those threads featuring extremely serious and controversial discussions, which end up getting me all worked up and giving me a headache. I like threads like "This Or That" and "Word Association" because they prove to be (for me at least) a welcome distraction (hell, I get to play a game in threads like those no matter how silly it may be and it's quite franky a welcome relief from all those econometric research papers, equations, my dissertation and all the other fuckin' joys associated with life as a postgraduate student!)

To Post #2517, you really are a sad misguided prick, it is I who take pity on you, go on, crawl back under your anonymous stone down by the seaside, where all the sewers flow (an apt address for the shit that you put on this forum,), Do you do this with everyones post or just mine......a bit scary really. If it is just my post I will start to get worried about you, fuck me there's a nutter who reads and digests my every word. You're not some kind of twisted pervert who reads the posts of one person then pulls them to bits with inane replies are you? Because it seems like it to me.Does anyone else on this site have just one person scrutinising their every word. I state my opinions, as for what you said in your post you criticise the content of my post (which is perfectly acceptable) then to styress your point you spell the most important word incorrectly, what a fucking Moron you are. If you are dyslexic I apologise.

But you have it much, much worse, and I remember this from watching TV in the US in the 70s. It was fucking irritating back then, so I can only guess how much worse it is now. Our Simpsons only have one break, but as with other US shows, you can see where the UK broadcaster has deleted additional commercial breaks. I would guess you probably have 3 breaks during The Simpsons...?

But the thing that pisses me off the most is that all the channels seem to have commercials at exactly the same time, so you can't even surf to avoid them.

Fortunately, we also have the BBC here. No commercials!

Major, it is much worse now. Most series in the Seventies ran 24+ minutes out of 30. I timed a TVLand new episode of Hot in Cleveland that was just shy of 18 minutes of 30. That's almost half of the show is freakin commercials! Re: the BBC. Have to give a shoutout to them. On Saturday nights here on the Public Broadcast Station they always air programs like Keeping Up Appearances, As Time Goes By, The Vicar of Dibley, and some other show about a dude living with his ex mother in law (?!) Were they megahits there in the UK? They are very popular here, as they have been running them for several years. I like all 4 of them, but mostly I like I can park it for a half hour without a commercial! :cheer:

Yep, there are easily more commercials on TV these day's. That's annoying alright but what I find even more annoying is that the sound volume of said commercials is always higher than the volume you've set for watching the actual show. I've heard there's to be a law introduced in Canada to stop that . Can't wait !

Ally, we have the same problem. The commercials blast you out of the room. I know it's because they think they are so sneaky that while people are off making a sandwich they want them to still hear the commercial. Little do they know how many people use the Mute. We also have a law being passed by Congress. Sorta sad it literally takes an Act of Congess to stop the Mad Men.

Kiwi! How are you? Great to "bump" into you here. You would think these stations that are making all this advertising money would at least have the courtesy not to mess up and delete the ending to a show. :o I would have been very annoyed if that had happened to a show I spent an hour watching. At least after reading these replies I know it's not my imagination. So good to see you here. missy :)

Hi Missy!

I'm doing good! It is so good to bump into you on here too! :) How are you? Did you enjoy that "Eagles" concert you went to?

My exams for this semester are done and I'm on leave till the 16th of July and then I'll be on my second and final semester of my Master's degree.

TV2 (the T.V network who comitted that grave error), received some complaints for the excessively long commercial break but unfortunately not too many since "Caroline In The City" is a rather old show. I bet my hat that if something like this had happened during a show like "Shortland Street" (a very popular NZ soap opera), the number of coompliants received by the network would have been overwhelmingly large! Oh well! That's the irony of life I guess!

Well I know the others you mention, and yes they were very popular. But that one doesn't ring a bell...sounds like pure hell! I would rather be eaten alive by rats than spend 5 minutes in the company of either of my ex monsters. WTF.

 Well Major, I had to look it up so you wouldn't think I was bonkers. The show was called, "After You've Gone,". It had a short run from 2007 through 2008 on BBC One and BBC HD. It starred Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie. But I was right on the plot. The guy's ex wife goes off to Africa and the lead character has to live at his marital home where his two teens are and "his opinionated, widowed, former mother-in-law" (Celia Imrie). So imagine that!

It's a very funny show if you ever get a chance to catch it there and like sitcoms. missy

Still none the wiser. Bit if it has Nicholas Lyndhurst in it, it will be worth watching, albeit through gritted teeth owing to the subject matter. I'll check it out.

If you haven't seen it, check out 'The Thick Of It'. Political satire. Funniest thing I've seen in decades. They also made a movie, set in the US - 'In The Loop', which isn't quite as good as the TV series (there were 3 seasons, about 6 episodes each I think). But don't watch it if you're averse to swearing. Lots of swearing.

To the forum members, this is not a random thought and I apologize for taking this thread off course for a moment to respond to previous post directed at me.....this will be my final post on the subject.

Joe, Joe, Joe....

To Post #2517,
What's up sh!t for brains? You can't quote?
you really are a sad misguided prick, it is I who take pity on you
YOU take pity on ME? :hysterical: Your worthless ass can't even get a job and sit on a computer all day thinking stupid shit to throw on us like you have for the past 2 months you've been on here! How long does your country allow you to suck off others contribution to society before they throw you out on your ass? Or does your wife take care of you financially so you can be the bum that you are....pathetic!
, go on, crawl back under your anonymous stone down by the seaside, where all the sewers flow
You know where I live - the USA motherf*cker - the place where we all burn Beatles albums and shoot John Lennon. Right?
(an apt address for the shit that you put on this forum,)
I've been on this forum for 5 years, you come on for a couple of months start a bunch of bullsh!t threads that don't even make sense, make statements to people that have nothing to do with the conversation and are a general all around pain in the ass to most here....
, Do you do this with everyones post or just mine......a bit scary really.
Do what, read, comprehend and remember what people write? That's what people, who aren't burnt out on alcohol abuse, do. We read, understand and comment on it - this is a f*ckin' forum that's what we do around here - leave if you don't like that we remember things about each other - or at least go and get a job to exercise your brain a bit, get some oxygen for it.... that doesn't come from a bottle!
If it is just my post I will start to get worried about you, fuck me there's a nutter who reads and digests my every word.
Again, it's called reading comprehension - try it sometime, if your level of brain energy can withstand such a difficult task.
You're not some kind of twisted pervert who reads the posts of one person then pulls them to bits with inane replies are you? Because it seems like it to me.
PERVERT? That's the kind of person your daughter is trying to stay away from, oh yeah that's YOU since you said she doesn't want anything to do with you, so good for her! I'm sure we are all glad that a doctor like you can diagnose us with our perceived problems by you.
Does anyone else on this site have just one person scrutinising their every word.
WHO is scrutinizing your every word? I wasn't even speaking to you when YOU went off on ME the first time! I hardly even refer to you. Especially your lack of typing abilities...two spaces after a period, etc.
I state my opinions, as for what you said in your post you criticise the content of my post (which is perfectly acceptable) then to styress your point you spell the most important word incorrectly, what a fucking Moron you are.
This is my favorite part of your lunatic post, unless stress is spelled differently over there - you misspelled a word when you were going after me for the same thing. However, when I misspelled incoherently yesterday, I was typing on my phone not my pc and I was running out the door at the time, going into work - you know, oh yeah you don't know because you're a lazy, good for nothing, piece of sh!t! BTW, moron is not a proper noun.... so it should not begin with a capital letter - idiot!
If you are dyslexic I apologise.
Again, another idiotic f'in statement by you. Dyslexia has nothing to do with misspelling, it's when the images you see are transmitted incorrectly to your brain and projected to be upside down, backwards or incomplete. What an uneducated douchebag you are. Glad we have you around to diagnose us though - how the f*ck did we ever get bye before you slithered into here? Oh yeah, that's right....just fine you f'in a-hole!

Don't ever speak to me again around here.....

I had a love/hate relationship with Mr. Rodgers as a child...i loved the parts of his shows where he showed how stuff got made, but HATED that damn fairytale world with the creepy sock puppets...and that damned green sweater...

...and his HORRIBLE off-key singing voice and corny lyrics..well, guess I wasn't the only one who didn't care for that..he's been remixed and re-tuned...and the results are surprisingly good...

Rock on Mr. Rodgers, and thanks for keeping a lonely kid company...

some other show about a dude living with his ex mother in law (?!)

I really love "After You've Gone" :D It used to air on UK T.V here during the weekend. Jimmy and his ex-mother-in-law Diana are just hilarious! I also like his best mate Kevin  That show used to be the only one I used to watch on weekends. They have stopped airing "After You've Gone" here in New Zealand (as far as I know) but I'm not too angry because they have replaced that with equally awesome British comedy like "Come Fly With Me" and "My Family" B)
