There was a little tool shed Where he made us suffer...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have never hidden from my beliefs and values. I suspect that if Jimmy was a satanist, he would freely admit it, and not hide behind backward masking. I highly doubt there is any legitimacy to any of these rumors. Being intrigued by the occult, does not necessarily a satanist make.

It would all sound like gibberish if you didn't have something to read along with. Real backmasking is painfully obvious...

Truth be told, my first, proper introduction to Zeppelin was through backwards masking (hopefully I don't have to turn in my Zep club membership card now) :P

I mean, Christian rock bands don't hide their beliefs in backward masking, so why should satanist rock bands? If you truly believe in something, then you defend it with life and limb. You don't hide and try and espouse your values through the back door. It's nonsense. Besides, does Jimmy really strike you as the type, apart from the stupid rumors? Nah. He had an interest in the occult and supernatural, but I'll give him the be benefit of the doubt here. Besides, Robert doesn't seem the type to have acquiesced to a satanist foundation, even if it did exist.

As Paul Simon once said, "People hear what they want to hear and disregard the rest......"

There are a lot of "TOOLS" out there who'll believe anything, especially vague back masking references.

Enjoy the music.

For those of you who havent had the pleasure of hearing Stairway backwards...

:P

I enjoyed this; I found it weirdly fascinating! Thanks Glyn.

A belief in "hidden messages" is typically a sign of paranoia.

Poor Satanists are discriminated against, so few proclaim their beliefs in public. I know a few Satanists. I have found them to be basically nice people, but they mostly listen to black metal, not Led Zeppelin.

the only backwards mask I've ever found to be legit is the last words by Lennon on Rain. And its freakin briliant!

Pink Floyd has a very good one on the The Wall (Empty Spaces IIRC). "Congratulations. You have discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care offffffff..........."

The difference between a real backward mask, and a BS one is quite apparent, from the above example.

You hear what you wanna hear. If you had listened to it without first reading that garbage, you would have heard exactly what it is....gibberish.

You really think Robert spent THAT much time to not only find the words to make that "message," but also put them into coherent, sensical lyrics when played forward (correctly).

Wow! What great sense The Dark Lord makes and FunkyPhantom. You guys are wise. So Jimmy is into some type of spiritualism. He has made it practice it seems not to really discuss it with anyone. Maybe a wise choice. So if he believe in angels of darkness, so do I. I'm a Christian but also a rebelling sinner. And there is no way they took the time to make backward lyrics. Then how come we don't hear it backward when we hear it frontwards. All I hear are clear English lyrics frontwards And great guitar playing! And a lot of babies. And great drumming and bass playing (How Many More Times).

Thanks Pagefan55 and Blackheart for the kind words. I suppose, at the end of the day, only Jimmy knows the truth, but the big picture of Jimmy's 70 year life, does not support the rumors and innuendo that have been kicked around over the years. Surely by now he would have been photographed, or seen in some compromising position, if in fact he was trying to conceal his beliefs from the outside world, and wasn't prepared to publicly acknowledge them. I'm just not buying it. I have no doubt that Jimmy was intrigued and interested in the occult, as evidenced by his former bookstore, Equinox, but as I said, that does not a satanist make anymore than reading Tolkein books makes someone a hobbit.
