The Jagger/Richards juggernaut is second only to Lennon/McCartney.

You're referring to the past, I was referring to the future.  We can check back in 30 years to see what transpires.

In 30 years time The Beatles will still be considered the greatest pop group of all time, and The Rolling Stones will still be considered the greatest rock n roll band of all time.

I say that because the social and political environment as well as the music industry that lead to that outcome no longer exists.

Additionally, I'd say that as the years go by, the Stones classics have aged better than the Beatles.   I for one think McCartless wrote a shit ton of treacly crap that doesn't sound so great today.

for the masses, it's about SONGS.  And the Stones had songs in spades.  Can't be denied.

That lame walking skeleton with a drug store inside of him has a lot of fucking nerve!!!  I have no respect for him now.  He is along for the ride like he has always been.  Jagger made him.  I can play as good as he can,  They always needed a true guitarist like Taylor to cover his inadequacies on the guitar.  He even had to take off a string ad play everything in open G to get by the fucking ugly bastard.  Go get some botox before you break a mirror.

Zeppelin is my all time favorite band, no  contest. But personally, I would rather be responsible for writing Gimmie Shelter, Street Fighting Man and Honky Tonk Woman than   Stairway to Heaven, Achillies Last Stand and Kashmir.

Hope no ones offended by this cause you shouldn't be. Those 3 Stones songs are probably the best rock n roll tunes ever written.

Like the Stones or not, they are up there. I'm a Stones fan, but would never mention them in the same breath of Zep, The Who, Deep Purple or Pink Floyd, all different kinds of music. The closest comparison in my book is The Beatles, they were the first boy band, lol.

The Beatles were/are more popular because pop culture tells us so. However The Stones were the better Rock & Roll band.

Along for the ride? Jagger made him? That's like people saying Page made Plant--ridiculous. Granted, Jagger's savvy/business acumen did propel the band to unprecedented heights, but it was primarily Keith who kept them together in the '80s after Mick had the mistaken notion he could be a superstar on his own.

Keith probably can't claim many awards as a guitar player--he copped a lot from Chuck Berry--but he's got attitude and spirit in spades, and is actually a damn good songwriter.

What?! Good God man, no offense to you, but that's insane! To your credit, at least you qualified it by saying R&R. Zep reigned in this category, but climbed loftier peaks with the three songs of theirs you mentioned, and many more. Stones can have their radio friendly, familiar song structure format (and don't get me wrong, I like them) to get you through a car ride, but epic Zep masterpieces make you pull over and listen. Forever captivating, hypnotic, layered, and so unpredictable. Each a completely different journey. I feel that these songs are still ahead of their time. R&R has its figure heads etched into mountain sides, but make no mistake, Zep's at the pinnacle peering down at them through the clouds.

Richards speaks nonsensically far too often. However, as a few have mentioned, the Stones by any standard have

probably 50 + excellent to great songs both from the 60's and 70's. Modern corporate rock radio has created a

situation where even the greatest rock bands basically have 8 to 10 songs played over and over. The Stones have

many classics that I have not heard for at least 25 to 30 years. The Beatles are still played all over because even if

they were innovating, much of their output still had pop undertones, hence non-rock stations often play them.

And forget about Richards being just a "good" guitar player; he rarely made a mistake live, jammed often with blues

and R&B greats onstage with no rehearsal, and used a battery of alternate tunings to customize his work.

That's close to the point I was making.  The Stones have reigned as one of the top bands since the 60's, but their fan base is dwindling because their music is very dated.  Zeppelin on the other hand, continues to get waves upon waves of new fans and their music does not sound dated, with a few exceptions.  Whenever I wear a Zeppelin shirt, I always get comments from younger fans.  Whenever I wear a Stones shirt, comments only come from older than me fans.  Never from younger.

Yes so much of this Walter! An older male cousin of mine was parting with his old Stones, Led Zep,
Pink Floyd etc. t-shirts he'd outgrown from years back. I can't tell you how fast his young daughter
scooped up those Zeppelin t- shirts - specifically the ones with Jimmy on them. The remaining went
to a second hand shop. He went back a couple a weeks later to part with some more and he said his
L Z shirts were being displayed in the 'younger' generation section and classified as unisex, where his
Stones shirts you guessed went straight to mens. These shirts were all same size and all guys cut, but
apparently the shirts are put where they believe they will get sold the fastest. Quite telling that the store
felt the L Z shirts would attract both girls and guys where as Rolling Stone shirts were a step away from
Arnold Palmer shirts. Ha!

So yes I definitely agree with you when you say you see younger people wearing and commenting
on Led Zeppelin apparel VS The Stones.  The same can be said between Keith on a shirt VS Jimmy.

The brutal truth is that younger generations have looked at all of those classic rock bands and deduced, fairly unanimously, that every single one of them deserved at least a good chunk of the euphoria and respect that their parents/grandparents bestowed upon them...EXCEPT the Rolling Stones. I truly do not personally know one single individual who holds them in anywhere near the same esteem as the Zeppelins, Beatles, Whos and Floyds of this World.

I think what is also interesting is the musical rehabilitation of Led Zeppelin over the last decade in the UK. BBC 6 Music which aims for the hipster type regularly plays Led Zeppelin (Black Dog aired twice in a week on Radcliffe and Maconie alone ); next to Savages, Field Music and Sleaford Mods. What is also noticeable is with bands like Zep their music still sounds contemporary. Kashmir in full sounds phenomenal on the radio. The Beatles; Zep and Bowie all seem to have retained a futuristic quality to their work.  Zep's reputation is I believe growing.

I'm to believe the 13 million + likes on The Rolling Stones official facebook page are made only by parents and grandparents.

I see many young people at every Stones concert I attend.

Maroon 5 even had a hit single, Moves Like Jagger.

This is in response to Walter's and Patricia's posts in particular (with whom I most wholeheartedly agree!) and to all other posters who are engaging in the whole Zep vs. Stones debate (with regard to whose music will stand the test of time).

Here's how I feel about the matter.

I am a very casual fan of The Rolling Stones (my dad is the one who is nuts about them, while my mom, on the other hand, can't stand them!).

Back when I was 17, there was something so exciting when I listened to songs like The Last Time, Jumping Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man, Brown Sugar and Gimme Shelter, for the first time. But that was 11 years ago. Nowadays, if I am being very honest, there are times when I feel so bored when I re-visit those songs. These songs sound so dated! The only albums that I seem to be enjoying at the moment are Exile On Main Street and England's Newest Hitmakers (since I'm a blues buff).

When it comes to Led Zeppelin, well, it is a completely different story! I crave to listen to songs like Tea for One, Achilles Last Stand, The Battle of Evermore, Stairway To Heaven, The Rain Song, Carouselambra, Kashmir, In My Time of Dying, Bring It On Home (which by the way, happens to be the ringtone on my phone), (and so many many more!!!) even today , as much as I did when I first really began exploring the band's catalog seriously, when I was 16. I first discovered Led Zeppelin, thanks to my dad and my dentist (it's a long story  ) when I was 12 and began exploring the music, in depth when I was 16.

Why?

Because almost all songs by Zep have the power to take the listener by the collar and shake them and smack them HARD!! I mean, anyone young, old or middle-aged will be gobsmacked and awe-struck when they listen to the mighty Led Zeppelin (either as a newbie or as a veteran)! With Jimmy's timeless and blazing guitar riffs, Robert's incredible and out of this world vocal abilities (there were times when I thought that he wasn't from this planet!), the magic of JPJ's bass and synths and of course, the THUNDEROUS Bonzo! Not to mention the band's innate ability to tell a fascinating story in so many songs, all conveyed through beautifully crafted lyrics!

Is it any wonder then, that future generations will continue to appreciate and love Led Zeppelin as time passes by, while The Stones  as 'culturally important' as they may seem, will eventually fall by the way side? I don't mean to offend anyone, but at the same time, I would like to say that no matter what anyone says, I will never change my mind about this! :P

All in all, time is and will be one Led Zeppelin's biggest friends, but will serve to be the biggest foe of The Rolling Stones! Again, just my two cents. :peace:

Edited to add: A few friends of mine from Vietnam, Malaysia and South Korea, whose music tastes were completely different from mine, marveled at the magic of Led Zeppelin, when I played albums like Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin III, IV, Physical Graffiti and Presence, one day while celebrating a friend's birthday (I was in charge of the music! ;) ). I also played a few albums by The Stones and let's just say that they all wanted to listen to Led Zeppelin, again! B)

Oh and another friend of mine, who used to be obsessed with 'artists' like Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift and Jason Mraz  , is now a huge fan of Queen, Rush and Led Zeppelin (all thanks to her cool older brother, to a certain extent myself and of course, her dad). Her dad and brother are massive Stones fans too, but to this day, she remains pretty blasé, about the kind of music that Jagger and Co., produced!

Led Zeppelin disbanded nearly 40 years ago.

The Rolling Stones are about to launch another massive South American tour.

I think Mick Jagger said it best when he sung "Time is on my side, yet it is!"

Well, good for them! As long as good old Mick doesn't collapse on stage and Keith Richards remains sober and doesn't get knocked over by coconuts, I'm happy! :)

Mick trains like a world class athlete. He and Keith will be just fine.
