Strings breaking

Which strings are you breaking? The 'b' string goes up to 'c' for the Rain Song so you have to be careful. All the others go down, however, and shouldn't be breaking.

One solution is to tune every string down a half or full step before going into your new tuning.

The easiest way is to use the 'Relative Tuning' method - not an electronic tuner. For example, tune to Standard E tuning in the normal way. Then tune the low 'E' string down to a D, and tune the rest of the strings in the Standard way relative to the D. This is called Standard D tuning, different to Drop D. The strings are now under less tension. Then tune to your desired tuning in the normal way. This should save your strings.

As a side-note, the band tuned down in the same way during the O2 show, for a different reason (Plant's voice), and it gave the songs a darker edge than when previously played in Standard E

Thanks for the help, I think the problem is when tuning back, it restretches again, and breaks (at the machine head) is there any technique (of basically turning the pegs) that can help them to not break as much?

There may be something incorrect about the way you are winding the strings at the machine-head then? Not sure without seeing a picture.
