Carouselambra

Tell me please, in "Carouselambra" there are words:

"And all was joy and hands were raised toward the sun

As love in _______ of plenty overrun".

When I listen to this song I hear the words: "horns of plenty" but sources of lyrics in Internet writes "the halls of plenty". There are many mistakes in Internet, so I'd like to know, what is the right variant?

I'm translating all Led Zeppelin songs from English into Russian, so it is very importing for me not to distort the phrase for people. :)

The only part of theat song I understand is, "I'm singin' AHhh, Ahhh, Ahhh".....

Well-well-well. :)

I've translated about 90% of their songs. And most of them are full of meaning for me. :)

May be you don't understand the song because there are metaphors and figures of speech in it?

It's poetical forms. You can understand all the songs if you let them to go through your heart, really go through. Then your feelings will help you. Imagination is the child of feelings.

I don't think she means she doesn't understand the meanings of the song, just what the words are. I have to agree with her because the words are so mixed into it. I can understand just a little bit more than that though.

Led Zeppelin - Carouselambra From the CD 'In Through the Out Door'

Written by Jones/Page/Plant Swan Song 16002 and/or Atlantic 92443-2

Sisters by the wayside bide their time in quiet peace,

await their place within the ring of calm.

Still stand to turn in seconds of release,

await the call they know may never come.

In times of lightness no intruder dared upon to jeopardize the course,

upset the run.

All was joy and hands were raised towards the sun,

as love in halls of plenty overrun.

Still in their bliss unchallenged mighty feast,

unending dances shadowed on the day.

Within the wall their dauting formless keep,

preserved their joy and kept their doubts at bay.

Faceless legions stood in readiness to weep, just turn a coin,

bring order to the fray.

And everything is soon no sooner thought than deed,

but no-one seemed to question anyway.

How keen the soaring hunter's eye prevails upon the land,

to seek the unsuspecting and the weak.

And powerless the fabled sat, too slow to lift a hand,

toward the foe that threatened them from the deep.

Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand,

adrift upon the sea of futile speech?

Where was your word, where did you go?

Where was your helping, where was your bow?

Dull is the armour, cold is the day.

Hard was your journey, dark was the way.

I heard the word, I couldn't stay, oh. I couldn't stand it another day.

Another day, ay, another day, Another day.

Touched by the timely coming, roused from the keeper's sleep,

release the grip, throw down the key.

Held now within the knowing, rest now within the peace,

Take of the fruit, but guard the seed.

Held now within the knowing, rest now within the beat,

take of the fruit but guard the seed.

Take of the fruit but guard the seed.

As Plant wrote, he is a cocktail-clouded troubadour who attempts to speak in tongues. :)

He is very well described himself, I think he is a real poet. And his poetry is a 1/5 part of Led Zeppelin chemistry that is so beautiful and unique.

The lines are actually:

A cocktail clouded troubadour attempts to speak in tongues

He's said enough, I'm through the door I'm moving right along

OK, "in halls".

Thank you, SteaveAJones. :)

Every time I see the printed lyrics to this song, there are always two lines missing after "who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand, adrift upon the sea of futile speech", and if you don't believe me, read it along as you listen to the song. I could never make out what he's singing, but it sounds like it ends with "would reach".

If anyone knows the two missing mystery lines to Carouselambra, please post them. Thank you.

I knew the lyrics were available in the ITTOD songbook, in fact, I memorized them then, 1979. This was/still is my favorite song on the album. Had they continued, I would have loved, and I mean LOVED it if they would have made this one of the highlights of their '80--81 tour. The song is definately a metaphor for loss/pain/rebirth...what better subject for them to expound upon in those days following the death of Karac, the accident in Rhodes, etc. I love this song wiht all my heart and soul...I still have the songbook I purchased in '79--funny thing is, one of my hs buddies took a pencil eraser and "erased" JPJ's "eyes" on the cover photo--it makes him look like a zombie or something, hee hee! Of course, it's still like that to this day!

Adrift upon a sea of futile speech?

And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan'

*** But no one there had heaven within their reach.

Where was your word, where did you go?

Where was your helping, where was your bow? Bow.

Hard was the journey, dark was the way. Way.

I couldn't stand it another day, another day,

Another day, another day.

Touched by the timely coming,

Roused from the keeper's sleep,

Release the grip, fall down the keep

They had to stay!

Held now within the knowing,

Rest now within the beat.

What do you mean by original, Steve? Are you referring to a the first run of the book? First edition, or something?

Yes, the first edition. I should add I haven't actually referred to it for this thread, as it's not within arm's reach at the moment. It would seem the lyrics I posted earlier may not

be completely correct. I look forward to referring to the original book.

Thank you for supplying the missing lines!

If you're ever in St. Louis, I'll buy you a beer at a karaoke bar. I'll sign up to sing Carouselambra and bore the hell out of everybody for ten minutes. It'll be fun!

Hmmm these lyrics remind me of Beatles "Glass Onion" without actually mentioning the band members name.

Where was your word, where did you go?

Where was your helping, where was your bow?

Dull is the armour, cold is the day.

Hard was your journey, dark was the way.

"Carouselambra" is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. Definately in my top 10 Led Zeppelin songs, although, it remains one of Led Zeppelin's most overlooked/under-rated songs (in my opinion). Before the the advent of the Internet, I really could only transcribe a few of the songs lyrics. Very hard to decipher and very much in the mix and background of the song. I believe Jonesy's keyboard mix diluted Robert Plant's lyrics. Now when I listen to "Carouselambra" and read and listen to the lyrics at the same time, I get a much better "feel" and "listen" to this great "Opus".

I have been able to pick up some of the lyrics on my own as time has passed and as I have been able to give the song more listens. It's still not the easiest song to follow or understand, but the one section of this song around 3:27 really makes it a fun and enjoyable song and definitely something different from anything else they ever did. My opinion on this song has changed a lot over the years. No matter what though, I have always been fascinated by it. The lyrics are probably the biggest reason for that.

I guess my ITTOD songbook is a first edition too because it's missing these lines. I guess it was corrected in future editions.

Was there a later edition featuring the missing lines? The post with those lines sourced it to a lyrics website with many differences from the songbook. I've always interpreted the second line as "They hold it very well within their reach" or something similar. I actually can't listen to it now as I'm in a tree, with a bow, hunting before heading to my retail job to turn a coin and bring order to the fray. Lol. It's always been a hobby of mine to find a mirror of myself within the many lyrics. Almost done...
