Led Zeppelin in Las Vegas?

I was wondering if Led Zeppelin ever performed in Las Vegas. I have checked the tour itinerary history on this website and I don't see any Las Vegas dates. I remember reading once they were booked to play the Las Vegas Convention Center, but Robert Plant had throat problems and it had to be cancelled. If anyone could tell me if they ever played Vegas, where and when would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No.

according to the Timeline they were supposed to play Las Vegas on April 19, 1970 but the show was cancelled due to Plant's illness.

http://www.ledzeppelin.com/show/april-18-1970

April 18, 1970

Phoenix, AZ US

Veterans Memorial Coliseum

Setlist:

We're Gonna Groove, Dazed and Confused, Heartbreaker, Bring It On Home, White Summer / Black Mountainside, Organ solo / Thank You, Moby Dick, Whole Lotta Love.

Notes:

The show is cut short due to Robert Plant feeling ill, which also ends the tour as the following night in Las Vegas is cancelled.

Jimmy Page addresses the audience after Whole Lotta Love: "You've been a fantastic audience, but there's been something happening tonight... Robert's been very ill and as he came off he's just collapsed and we've just called for a doctor. We'd really like to do more, but obviously it's impossible."

Thank you for doing the research! I guess if you lived in Vegas back then and wanted to see Zeppelin you had to go to L.A...

Yeah, you're right, it's gone, another victim of modern Vegas makeover...

Yes - they played at the old Ice Palace at the Commercial Center during the summer of 1969. The group Pinkindy Canandy opened for them.

Really? I wonder why it's not included on any of the dates in the "timeline" portion of this website. Do you know the exact date by any chance?

I believe it was in August - no idea why it is not listed but it was an unforgettable experience for a 15 year old lad seeing his first rock concert.

Led Zeppelin in Las Vegas '69? Never happened.

Searched for backup and found this - from Las Vegas Weekly - "top 25" concerts held in Vegas

3. Led Zeppelin, Las Vegas Ice Palace, 1969

Though the Internet purports Zeppelin's only Vegas-related date to have been an April 19, 1970, Convention Center cancellation (either Robert Plant was in poor health or tickets weren't selling well, depending which version you believe), we've spoken to a dozen individuals who vividly recall getting the Led out at this once-hopping all-ages venue in the Commercial Center off Sahara Ave. It went down atop the wood-covered ice of a hockey arena—most likely, we deduce, on either August 11 or 12, between shows in San Diego and Phoenix—with fans of the band's blues-driven early music fanning across the plywood floor and up the bleachers along the sides. "They were good, except when Jimmy Page pulled out that violin bow and drove me nuts with it for the next 25 minutes," recalls Las Vegas resident Tom Burt. "It was before they were really big—they only had their first album out—but if you knew what was goin' on, you knew who they were."

Well, it would make sense for them to have played that date, it would have been right after they played San Diego on 8/10/69. Sounds like it might have been one of those spur-of-the-moment gigs, not on the official schedule. I wonder if this has ever been brought to Sam's attention?

The ONLY possibility within that month is August 11th.

On August 12th Jimmy flew to New York to mix Led Zeppelin II at A&R studios. His flight landed at JFK International and he was supposed to have been met by Peter Grant and journalist Ritchie Yorkie but the times were two hours off and they weren't there so Jimmy took a cab to the studio.

At the studio, Jimmy and Eddie Kramer completed the mixing of 'Bring It On Home' and the playback for 'Living Loving Maid', 'Heartbreaker' and 'What Is And What Should Never Be'. Having listened to the playback, Jimmy, Peter and Ritchie conversed for some time.

Jimmy was flown from JFK International to LAX that night, and he rejoined the band at their hotel, the Continental Hyatt House on the Sunset Strip.

Where things get mysterious (IMHO) is Jimmy's outbound flight to New York apparently transited Salt Lake City. One would think had he originated from Los Angeles it would

have been a direct flight to New York. Perhaps he originated from Las Vegas on a flight

with a stop-over in Salt Lake City?

The possibility they played Las Vegas on August 11th 1969 is suddenly very real!

Edit: Their next date was August 13th in Lubbock, TX. Unsure why Las Vegas Weekly

mentions Phoenix. That is clearly incorrect.

The Ice Palace was an old ice skating rink in a shopping center located on the south side of East Charleston (possibly East Sahara - it's been a long time & I haven't lived in Vegas since 1971) between Maryland Parkway & Eastern. If I recall correctly, there were some other big shows there in 1969, including Led Zeppelin.

Commercial Center (or what's left of it, anyway) is located just south of E. Sahara Ave., about a block west of Maryland Pkwy.

Hey, Steve, I think this is evolving into a "Zeppelin Mystery"!

Absolutely. I'm very intrigued by the possibility. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten much beyond confirming the Ice Palace did indeed host popular music concerts in 1969. The

whole story sounded so preposterous initially - Led Zeppelin at an Ice Palace in Las Vegas on the only possible open date in August 1969- but the possibility is very real.

I never could figure out why Jimmy flew to New York from Salt Lake City but if he did

not depart from Los Angeles he may have needed a connecting flight. All I can do at

this point is implore any forum members with access to Las Vegas newspaper archives

(public library) to scour the week of August 11th 1969 for mention of a Led Zeppelin

performance at the Ice Palace (advertisement, review, news item, gig listing). At this

moment it remains unconfirmed officially.

Thanks for that. I actually did a keyword search on Pinkiny Canady when this started and came up with nothing much. Michael Chain, here I come!

Steve,

Pinkiny Canandy was a talented band formed in 1969 and recorded an album that year.

Additional information can be found at the link below - most of the information is towards the Knack, who Chain played with before P.C.

P.C is referenced at the end of the article.
