3hrs,

That's a nice list. Does the "+" mean you think it's the best version?

Can you post the rest of the list? Of course, opinions may vary but this might be helpful for a lot of us when choosing which version to get.

Thanks!

To hell with a sounboard lol

I would want multitracks haha and I know Jimmy has more than he leads on. Any city they played multiple nights I can almost guarantee there is professional multitrack tapes done with a mobile recording truck. Example. The New York shows- 3 at MSG 1975 3 at Nassau 1975 Largo 1977 -4 nights New York 6 nights 1977 LA 1977 six nights and any other year with multiple nights. It is just a question of if Mr. Page thinks they are of quality to ever release

You got any sources on this? An official release from '77 would be oh so good.

Rumour and talk from the Zep camp has always suggested that there were no multitracks taken from the 77 tour. That could I spose be a cover story with Page thinking the performances arent good enough but it was afterall a "comeback" tour and not ment to be there only shows in the space of 4 years. Those shows are also pretty well documented when it comes to photos and I'd guess eagle eyed fans would have picked out the extra equipment if any multitracking were going on.

As was said in the original thread though I really don't think even a multitrack would "help" the 77 dates much, Millards recordings in LA are just perfect for Zep of that era IMHO capturing the energy without highlighting Page and Plants problems too closely.

The soundboard that everyone has been waiting for over the past few years is of course the second Seattle 75 show, lots of releases from that tour have happened and its well known as the best date, arguebley Zep's(and Page's) best show post 73.

Getting more into fantasy if I could pick one show to surface on SB perhaps the first LA 71 date? thats an amazing performance without a good audience source and the other SB's from that tour sound good.

I for one wouldn't be that extreme. No doubt a multitrack is preferable over two track SB, but in the past there were some really nice boards I thorougly enjoyed (Zürich 1980, Vienna 1973, Orlando 1971,...).

The assumption that Mr Page had a multitrack wheeled out during most of the multiple nights at major venues seems most unlikely. The Wally Heider (U.S) or Stones Mobile (Europe) units were not cheap. And I guess expert engineers like Eddie Kramer cost fortunes as well.

Anyway, there a quite a few occasions where the band had both the Revox (or Nakamishi) deck rolling AND the multitrack machines (MSG 1973, Knebworth,...)

I would tend to think Jimmy would rent a multitrack once or twice a year (Japan 1971, US-California 1972, New York 1973 , EC 1974 and maybe for some one offs (like RAH 1970, Southampton1973 ).

I am listening to the 2nd night in LA 6-22-77 and it it doesn't get near the mythic praise as the 6-21-77 and the 6-23-77 shows but they are on fire this night- I think it is a fantastic version of No Quarter. The Song Remains the Same and In My time of Dying are outstanding and the version of Achilles Last Stand is just insane. Bonham and Page are almost about to kill each other haha in their jamming.

I think soundboards from LA '77 would be a "wasted wish", since Mike Millard's audience recordings are amazing, better than most soundboards anyway. No, I think I'll go with a full soundboard of a March '73 German show, perhaps Hamburg or Offenburg. And maybe Bath 1970.

I am looking at the setlist of that show, did they open with Black Dog or was Rock and Roll and OTHAFA just not recorded?

Agreed. If an L.A. '77 SBD were to magically appear, the 22nd is the show I'd want it to be since it's such an iffy recording (combination of recordings, actually). The Millard recorded shows don't need soundboards IMO.

I agree- sometimes getting the sb after having great audience shows- kinda changes stuff- the sb sometimes makes mistakes etc stand out more- because you don't have the audience ambiance. Some sb's are really nice like the Flying Circus- 2-12-75 but some of them are really dry sounding.

That would be great if that really happened, but if my memory is correct, I do not recall seeing more than one mic on Bonham's kick drum at the 1977 LA Forum gigs I went to, and presumedly one of the signs that a show was multi-tracked is the presence of two or more mics on the kick-drum.

Agree with the others about wanting a SBD of the June 22, 1977 Forum gig above the other 1977 Forum shows. Among the Zeppelin treats I bought during my latest swap meet visit was "Second Night At the Forum" put out by the Scorpio label...even though it's not as good an audience recording as Millard's, it's still a good show and much better than Luis Rey lets on in his books. In fact, the OTHAFA guitar solo sounds closer to the fuzzed-out-spaceyness that I remember than even the Mike Millard recordings, which come across a little too clean for some reason.

I don't get the hype about the Landover SBDs...I got the May 26, 77 "Bringing the House Down" and after listening to it once have had no desire to ever listen to it again.

So, my wish list for Soundboards remains:

Anything 1968-1973, especially the "BEARD ERA".

Early 1975, when they were doing Wanton Song, Levee and HMMT.

The marathon Seattle 75 show and March 12, 75, the second, and BEST of the Long Beach(if not the whole Southern California swing) shows.

June 22, 1977 LA Forum.

The 1979 Copenhagen warm-ups.

Well after How the West was Won- I looked at pics of Los Angeles and Long Beach 1972 and it was the normal mic placement on the drums- single on the bass etc so that blew that theory out of the water for multitrack shows having to have an assortment of mics on the stage. . haha

I think you may have been looking at misdated photos then? A lot of the ones from Los Angeles and Long Beach are mis-dated as being from San Diego, etc.

Here's one from the LA Forum, 1972 (mis-dated on the Getty site as being from LA 73):

http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/74280757/Michael-Ochs-Archives

Two mics on the kick drum, and some very nice big mics overhead.

Well lots of pics are mis-dated and you are right , that is 1972 and not 1973. For the longest in all 4 of my Neal Preston books- he claims the pics of the Chicago show-(stormtrooper outfit) is 4-7-77 which it is actually 4-10-77. He also claims the waiting to go onstage to start the US 1977 tour photo is at Dallas 4-1-77 but after much detective work- I think that pic is actually waiting to go onstage at the next show- Oklahoma 4-3-77 - because Robert Plant is wearing a differnt blouse than at the first show in Dallas. He wore the pinkish with blue patterns at the opening show in Dallas and then the pic he says is Dallas - is the dark purple blouse he wore at the majority of the 1977 shows.

I went thru the Getty archive recently but was mainly looking at `1977 photos so I missed this pic from 1972 that you posted. Good Find-Thanks.
