From the Official John Paul Jones Arena Website

The name of the new 16,000 seat arena at the University of Virginia has people wondering. Where did that name come from? Is it named after the Revolutionary War Hero? Did the Led Zeppelin Bassist have ties to Charlottesville?

It's none of those things, a simple Googling would have answered the question.

John Paul Jones Arena is named in honor of the father of Paul Tudor Jones, a commodity trader and Virginia alumnus who donated $35 million for the construction of the arena. Paul Tudor Jones earned a B.A. in Economics from the University in 1976. His father, John Paul "Jack" Jones, is a 1948 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.
