SteveAJones
thats one of the most impressive lists i have seen, steve. i'm gonna bookmark it for my own personal reference, if you don't mind as to what you are looking for, let's see what we can dig up.. I can send it to you as a spreadsheet if you'd like, which includes most of his session activity, media appearances, hotels they were booked in, etc. back in the sixties. His recollections are quite understandably sketchy at best, but I'd like to think this can evolve into the ultimate memory jogger! I'm going to get JPJ's 1967 German tour itinerary confirmed if it's the last thing I do. All he remembers about that "Yardley tour" with Herman's Hermits is Hamburg, lol! I know that you are a human encyclopedia but I figured that I would add to your 7 July 1968 list at the bottom of your list. I have two books on The Yardbirds, one by Alan Clayson and the other by John Platt, Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty. The book by Alan Clayson confirms on page 193 that the Sunday, 7 July 1968 performance at Student Union Luton College of Technology, Luton, Beds, England is the last official performance by The Yardbirds. SteveAJones
The book by Alan Clayson confirms on page 193 that the Sunday, 7 July 1968 performance at Student Union Luton College of Technology, Luton, Beds, England is the last official performance by The Yardbirds. ROCK ON! Alan certainly knows his Yardbirds. I'd be very interested to hear how confirmation of that particular date was arrived at (review, photo, ticket stub?) in his book. I'm not saying it did not happen, only that I have never seen any substantiation that it did.
ZeppFanForever
Alan certainly knows his Yardbirds. I'd be very interested to hear how confirmation of that particular date was arrived at (review, photo, ticket stub?) in his book. I'm not saying it did not happen, only that I have never seen any substantiation that it did. Reading through it now, how did he come to that conclusion? There is no substantiation in the book at all. It doesn't mention anything in the other book either despite Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty co-writing it. We should e-mail Alan Clayson and ask him how he came to that conclusion. ROCK ON!
widget
I AM VERY INTERESTED IN ANY CONCERT REVIEWS, ADVERTS, PHOTOS, CORRECTIONS, ADDITIONS, OR RECOLLECTIONS CONCERNING JIMMY'S PRE-ZEPPELIN PERFORMANCES. PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA PM OR POST YOUR INPUTS TO THIS THREAD. July 7 1968 Sun Luton, Bedfordshire, England Luton Technical College Note: I have never seen any confirmation of this date having been performed! Jimmy had already given press interviews in New York (mid-June) to announce the break up of the group and his intentions to form a new lineup. Alan Clayson in his Yardbirds book claims Jimmy and Dreja announced breakup of the Yardbirds in a press conference on July 8, 1968, the day after the Luton date. If in fact July 7 did not happen, then just about every book and journalist on Led Zeppelin would be wrong. Apart from Grant saying "I don't remember" in one article, I have never seen any publication which has categorically refuted the July 7 date. reezon
There some unofficial dates that Jimmy jammed at the Marquee between his Crusaders days and the Yardbirds. Going to have to dig out some of my old books to see any specific dates mentioned. Some of the Jams include Clapton I believe. Cyril Davis used to organize these jam sessions I think. Its been long time since I've read those books so I cant be sure.
Cat
Article snippet from 1966 DECEMBER 11. 1966 THE LIMA NEWS. LIMA, OH BY CHRIS GUAGENTI News Women's Writer "Come in and have a seat," Jim McCarty of the "Yardbirds" said as the luggage was unloaded from the car into one of the three rooms that they were to occupy. The nationally famed singing group, hailing from England, were in town for the weekend to perform with Lima's "Breakouts" for crowds at Springbrook Gardens last Sunday. On one of the beds was what looked like the hide of some shaggy mammal or the hair of its owner. "Oh, that. . .it's just the coat I got from Afghanistan. . . . bought it in Chicago in some second - hand ditty'," Jim Page the guitar player said in a "vetty" British accent. "If you'll excuse please I will just run some bath water," Mr. Page said. "I never perform before I have my bath." "You need one," rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja remarked. "Did you know that we'll be filming 'The Blowup' right soon? Should be quite a pic. . .don't know too much about it at the moment." He added, "This, is our last date in the States. We have been here for six weeks and the stop before here was Springfield, Mo. "I told a press reporter there that our next date was in Leema. 'Peru?'; she asked. I told her, of course, and left it at that."

SteveAJones
Alan Clayson in his Yardbirds book claims Jimmy and Dreja announced breakup of the Yardbirds in a press conference on July 8, 1968, the day after the Luton date. If in fact July 7 did not happen, then just about every book and journalist on Led Zeppelin would be wrong. Apart from Grant saying "I don't remember" in one article, I have never seen any publication which has categorically refuted the July 7 date. If a press conference was held it was old news, as Jimmy had done a round of press interviews in New York before returning to England in mid-June. Some of the UK papers picked up on what he had said at that time. some did not. So it now seems I'm looking for irrefutable substantiation of the 7/7/68 concert and 7/8/68 press conference
SteveAJones
There some unofficial dates that Jimmy jammed at the Marquee between his Crusaders days and the Yardbirds. Going to have to dig out some of my old books to see any specific dates mentioned. Some of the Jams include Clapton I believe. Cyril Davis used to organize these jam sessions I think. Its been long time since I've read those books so I cant be sure. Thanks for that reminder. He also accompanied the beat poet Royston Ellis at some of his readings in London. Just a little background guitar music, fills and what not. Jimmy was very young then and needed permission from his parents to go that far afield, as he did with Neil Christian and The Crusaders as well. SteveAJones
From BUCKS COUNTY (PA) COURIER TIMES MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1968 The Yardbirds have composed a rock n' roll score for a ballet (it premiered in Paris a month ago). Thank you. News item casts doubt on the following two events having been cancelled. Perhaps it was the LP which was cancelled but the events were held after all? I'll see if Dreja or McCarty can shed some light on this one. SteveAJones
I told her, of course, and left it at that." Some great quotes to be found in that one. The article does confirm to some degree this entry: December 4 1966 Sun Lima, OH USA Springbrook Gardens Teen Club Note: This date arranged independent of the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars tour Note: Support from The Breakouts Note: Two performances...2pm and 5pm I presume Jimmy purchased the Afghani jacket back in August '66 whilst in Chicago. Dreja's comments about the film are out of chronological sequence with what is known about when they'd filmed their segment (several months before). Perhaps he meant it would be released soon but they had yet to see it and this point was lost in transcription.

I thought it was interesting the other day a discussion on the history of the Mellotron and the fact it was invented at IBC Studios back in 1964. Interestingly that's where Page, Beck, Moon and Entwistle gathered for their proposed "supergroup" which went over like a lead zeppelin in 1966. I've wondered whether that previous history of the place influenced Page's decision to wanting a singer who could play that instrument. swandown
Tossing some fodder into the fray.... c. 1960 - a couple poetry readings with Royston Ellis at the Mermaid Theatre February 27, 1961 - one confirmed date with Neil Christian & The Crusaders c. 1961-63 - Page plays a few shows with Cyril Davies. Supposedly this occurred just after he quit Neil Christian's band, but I've also read that he continued to occasionally play with Davies while enrolled in art school. 1962 - Page forms a band with pianist Andy Wren and plays a few Thursday nights at the Marquee c. 1962-63 - Page occasionally plays in a jazz band with Ian Stewart and Glyn Johns 1963 - Page joins Carter-Lewis & The Southerners. I don't know how long he played with the group but I did find evidence of a BBC session from 11/24/63 that seems to fit the timeline. I don't think he was still playing with the band when The Who opened for them in February 1964, however. early 1963 - Page sits in on a BBC radio session with an unknown band. November 1963-January 1964 - Page joins Mike Hurst & The Methods and plays a few shows with them before quitting to do full-time session work. December 14, 1963, Epsom Bath Hall - Page sits in with a band called The Presidents, who are managed by his former bandmate Glyn Johns. May 6, 1964 - Page attends a concert on Eel Pie Island and later jams with Bill Wyman, Jeff Beck and Ian Stewart. c. May 1964 - Page plays a few shows with Mickey Finn & The Blue Men That's all I got.

SteveAJones
Record Mirror May 16, 1964 Note: The cute cartoon pic in the bottom right hand corner with Jimmy in the band. Awesome find, Meg! So it seems Mickey Finn was fulfilling a residency (every Weds). Given Jimmy was included in the band's promotional photos as well as the cartoon sketch I'm beginning to suspect he may have performed with them many times. No confirmation of that being the case as of yet.

No confirmation of that being the case as of yet. Actually they were giving out free tickets and giveaways every Wednesday (between 7 and 10pm) in May, for a surprise party/gig, which was eventually held by Mickey Finn at the Cellar Club at 22a High Street, Kensington on the 31st May. Jimmy no longer appears in anymore Micky Finn pics by mid-July so I'm assuming he only did some gigs with them.
lif
I can send it to you as a spreadsheet if you'd like, which includes most of his session activity, media appearances, hotels they were booked in, etc. back in the sixties. His recollections are quite understandably sketchy at best, but I'd like to think this can evolve into the ultimate memory jogger! Steve - is this offer from so many years ago still good? If so, I'd sure love to get a copy of that spreadsheet. Thanks.
