Rehearsals at Manticore Studios, early 1977

Led Zeppelin started rehearsals for the 1977 U.S. Tour early in the year. They began somewhere in northern London, and then moved to Manticore studios in Fulham, where the following pictures are all taken. I wonder whether anybody has more photos from there, or indeed more detailed information about the rehearsals? Some exact dates, perhaps? Anyway, here goes.

Great photos Otto and Riot ! Thanks for sharing them.

I wonder what song the peddle steel was being used for ?

Oh, I don't know, ally. He did talk about the pedal steel a few years ago, though, and described how he found it really difficult to play the instrument, in Guitar World something like three years ago - it was an interview with both him and Jack White. He does play it on 'Your Time is Gonna Come' and 'That's The Way' - maybe he thought he might want to use it on stage for the latter song, but I don't know.

Thanks Otto :)

It's such a cool sounding instrument and it would have been great to hear him play it live. I couldn't think off hand what other songs he might have been contemplating using it on. When The Levee Breaks maybe ?

Many of the pics were taken by Pennie Smith and published along with an interview by Roy Carr in the Feb 26th 1977 issue of NME if that helps.

Oh and an intervew with Pagey published in NME Nov 20th 1976 states that rehearsals began two weeks earlier. All Jimmy's interviews from that day at SwanSong in November state that they will begin their US tour in February, in fact I think it began in April, so not sure what happened there.

(I have more pics. Just have to fnd them.)

Oh, that's great, Knebby! Thanks.

I've known some (by no means all) of these photos ever since the Visual Documentary book, but never made the connection. Here's a bigger version of one of them:

So the rehearsals started already in November 1976.... According to Dave Lewis's Concert File they moved the rehearsals to Manticore Studios in early 1977.

And that's right, they originally planned to start the tour in Ft. Worth on February 27, but Robert became ill with Laryngitis, so they postponed it, and the first gig became Dallas on April 1.

Hey, thanks c4plant - I had never seen that one. :)

You're all welcome. It's been quite the educational thread. :)

Great shots Otto and Knebby!

The pedal steel guitar was to be employed for a reworking of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.

Ah, so that's what they planned to do! Can you remember where you know that from, Chicago?

Yeah Otto that information comes from an interview Jimmy Page had with Chris Salewicz in February 1977.

Speaking about the rehearsals for the 1977 tour. JP: " But I'm pretty confident. Everyone's confident. As far as the playing goes there's no problems at all. We've got such a variety in there- Oh, "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You' is another number that we've been using pedal steel guitar instead of the usual. So it sounds pretty different from the original."

Thanks! I will have to get that one.
