HUGE NEWS - The Bonham/Jones/ Page Sessions of 2008

I almost jizzed myself listening to Myles Kennedy describing Jones on the pedal steel guitar & piano, and Jimmy Page "had this amazing riff", it feels cool knowing that they still have it. Interestingly enough, a tape might exist of it, as he indicates that Jimmy wanted to know if the stuff was being recorded because of the excitement he was having from it. Too bad Robert doesn't make the phone call:

Listen at the 3 min 20 second mark onwards:

Saw it via zeppelin news twitter handle....

Cool story, dude still sounds so nervous like page has the dogs of doom ready to sack him if he tells too much. Honestly of the crop of people who's names have been floated, he could have worked the best, young guy with great pipes and a ton of energy.

What he said:

Wasn't Gunna call it zeppelin, working title was something around calling it some kind of project

Some killer tune existed with a classic page riff and jones on pedal steel

Worked for a week and never heard back from them

Jams were recorded with Myles on vocals, page expressly asked if tape was rolling...

Wish they would have asked what zeppelin songs they jammed....I mean we know someday somehow if there are tapes they will be heard, just cool to hear a bit more about all of it.

Howard is a Page fanatic, and Bababoey understansd that because they keep putting the request in for an interview, give Howard time, at some point he is going to have Jimmy Page do a proper sit down interview for an hour or something and hopefully we can get a better understanding of what happened with those sessions.

Page has never done and will never do an interview with Howard Stern because Howard Stern doesn't stick to a script and relishes in bringing up sensitive or controversial topics. Page would get roasted within ten minutes.

In the last few interviews I have seen of Jimmy, he seems to struggle quite a bit with some questions - almost like he's not understood what's said - and he point blank refuses to answer anything where his opinion is required (what's your personal favourite etc..). He's hardly likely to open up about a subject that only really served to widen the chasm between him & Plant.

In other words, Page, Jones & Jason jammed with Myles Kennedy SIX YEARS AGO.

Not huge and definitely not news.

. Well it's huge news to Charles and it is Zeppelin related so no big deal really. I do agree Jimmy would most likely never do a Howard Stern interview.. But it could be great

Agreed. I can't believe that Roger Waters did a Stern interview. Within seconds, the subject was on sex. I mean, really, Roger Waters and sex? Roger handled himself quite well, but I just felt like Roger was above all that crap. Stern was about to go on air with Daltrey and Townshend and in his lead-up, mentioned Pete's problems with internet porn. Pete bolted and Roger managed to do the interview solo. If Stern got Jimmy in the studio, it would be all about the L.A. groupie scene and some very sensitive stuff for Jimmy.

Even McCartney got the Stern treatment. I think Stern went so far as to suggest Macca had a gay experience or something. Anyway, Macca managed to get through the interview with a lot of smirking and doing a lot of skillfull answer avoidance.

Kennedy spoke about it in response to a question from Stern about whether or not Jimmy still has good new stuff...

Correct, Kennedy clearly states at the 3 min and 40 second mark that Page had this new riff because that is what Howard was asking him, and Kennedy clearly states it was an amazingf riff, that John Paul Jones had a piano idea going on and Kennedy goes to say that Jones picks up a Mandolin refering to coming up with another bit. And Kennedy clearly states a number of times, coming up with vocal lyric ideas, so he is clearly referring to new material.

Clearlty between the ideas that were brought forward to Jeff Martin, and afterwards ideas that were brought forward to Kennedy, Page and Jones still have some magic left in them. Clearly some people have wrongly assumed that Page has no ideas left, he clearly does. It would be so wonderful of Robert actually sat down with Page and Jones and worked on this stuff together.

Could be that some of these purported songs ended up inspiring Black Country Communion material as well.

Personally, I don't hear anything I would consider an amazing riff on those discs tho.

In terms of a Howard Stern interview, I can just imagine. So Jimmy, how old was Lori..... when..... , and it goes down hill from there.

Actually, Kennedy states the jam riff was "amazing", not new. However, if you want to interpret his comment as meaning "new" and that any of this is "huge news" more power to you. I enjoy Myles Kennedy's work with Slash but can't imagine him being the right fit for the Page, JPJ & Jason line up. It seems Jimmy arrived at the same conclusion within a week. As I understand it, he wasn't necessarily keen on bringing vocalists in at that point anyway.

Stern: Does Jimmy have some good riffs and stuff, things he's got in his head?

Kennedy: Ya, There was this one in particular where he had this amazing riff and John Paul Jones was playing the pedal steel

Clearly that exchange indicates that Jimmy still has it, and I agree, perhaps Kennedy wasn't the right guy, but the good news is that we have confirmation that there was in fact new material being hashed out on the fly and that Jones/Page still have some ideas which clearly put an end to the lie that Robert talks about only music of the past, when Jones/Page were making NEW music.

According to Chris Dreja, Page & Jones booked three months of rehearsal time and Kennedy claims he spent a week with them (in June 2008). So all of this was within six months of the 02 concert which already proved Jimmy still "had it". Sure, new "ideas", "music", whatever probably presented themselves (just as they had during the Page/Lee instrumental sessions in Summer '99) but I'm a bottom line guy and the bottom line is it amounted to nothing. Are some still so desperate for "new" music from Page they'll devour morsels like jam riffs? Apparently so, but I've moved beyond caring all that much about it. I feel the same way about Robert's "new" music. Page hasn't put out a decent studio album in 16 YEARS and for me Robert's last LP of original material worth repeated listening was 20 YEARS ago.

It seems clear to me that Robert was giving mixed signals about a full-blown tour around the time of the O2 show, making statements about needing to get past current project commitments. The media was running wild with reunion stories and promotors were issuing statements about record-breaking sums of money. I think Robert then fell into his predictable Led Zeppelin "calvalcade" mindset and began to lose interest in anything he might have previously said. Page, still salivating at the thought of these record-breaking amounts of money, went ahead with a plan that was basically, let's do it, with or without Robert. I think he thought Robert might come around, but if not, maybe we can find a Robert stand-in. Now it's purely conjecture why this plan of Page's didn't materalize. It could be that promotors were, understandably, not interested in a Led Zeppelin without Plant. It could be that Plant, having veto-power, said no to a Led Zeppelin venture without him. It could simply be that the various singers were unconvincing in their renditions of Zep classics. Either way, Plant, I believe, completely lost any grain of reunion spirit he once had due to the replacement singer auditions.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why Robert would be upset about the direction the Page, JPJ & Jason project took ("replacement singers") when Robert had already made it clear to Jimmy (privately) that he was not interested.

It's my belief that as much as Robert wants no part in a Zep reunion, he is still very protective of preserving the image of Led Zeppelin. He's stated numerous times of how proud he is of what Led Zeppelin was. I think he saw the Led Zeppelin brand/image being ruined by what would have been a semi cover band with only half of its original members. He knows the singer is, by default, the center of attention of most bands. I wish he would do a reunion tour, but I agree with what I believe is his view.
