With these shows being rescheduled for September, does that mean there is going to be another U.S. tour in the fall? It's been a long time since he has visited Central Florida...

Whole Lotta Love

Robert Plant ~ May 31, 2015 @ The Santa Barbara Bowl

By Jenny Schlax

When a rock legend comes to your backyard, you better recognize. And at 66 years old, Robert Plant is a living legend.

Better known as the voice of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant is responsible for defining his generation with such hits as “Whole Lotta Love,” “Dazed and Confused,” and “Ramble On,” not to mention “The Rain Song” and “No Quarter.” But his career has lived strong since his dazed and confused days and on May 31, 2015 a packed Santa Barbara Bowl was lucky enough to receive the legend.

robert-plant-bowl.jpg

Photo: Paul Dunkley

Tall in stature and humble in demeanor, Robert Plant emerged on stage in a shinny pink shirt under a near full moon ready to rock the house down. With his signature high pitch-vocals echoing throughout the Santa Barbara Bowl, Plant worked his way through some classic hits, throwing in some new material along the way. Impressively, his voice was still as golden as it must have been nearly 40 years ago.

Not to be overlooked, The Sensational Space Shifters added their own flavor to the set, nicely remixing the classics to be reflective of a more modern era. Heavy guitar, bright lights, and added keyboard rejuvenated the songs, giving the hits a new edge.

The Englishman took note of his age, joking with the audience as he played through the night. But in the end, there was nothing but a whole lotta love for this gent.

And now, Mountain Jam Festival time at Hunter Mountain, Hunter, NY! (5-6-2015):

Robert Plant Reigns at Mountain Jam

By Matthew Wilkening June 5, 2015 11:45 PM

Can we all agree that Robert Plant is the king of classic rock yet? Because his masterful performance at Mountain Jam tonight was just the latest reminder that nobody else in this genre continues to add to their legacy as impressively as he does with each new album and tour.

Plant’s set was split roughly in thirds between tasteful covers, songs from his excellent, African-influenced new album ‘lullaby and… the Ceaseless Roar‘ and intriguingly reworked Led Zeppelin classics. Rather than trying to re-create the exact sound of his former band – a fool’s errand – Plant has instead managed to do something much more impressive and important: keep their spirit of exploration alive for over three decades with his ever-evolving solo career.

His knack for selecting excellent band mates and inspiring them to find new ways to interpret one of rock’s most sacred back catalogs remains as impressive as ever. The Sensational Space Shifters breathed new life into songs such as “Black Dog,” “What Is and What Should Never Be” and in particular, the hauntingly slowed-down “Dazed and Confused.” Juldeh Camara’s dazzling work on an African one-stringed fiddle was used to great effect as the lead instrument on a number of extended mid-song explorations, and guitarist Justin Adams had the crowd in the palm of his hand during his rockabilly-inspired solo towards the end of “Funny in My Mind (I Believe I’m Fixin’ to Die).”

A small sampling of a show from this fantastic tour was recently released in the form of the More Roar EP, and after tonight’s display we can only hope that a complete document of this trek will be made available when the tour comes to an end.

There’s plenty of great music still to come from this weekend’s Mountain Jam festival. Saturday night’s headliners include Gov’t Mule and the Black Keys, and you can watch it all live from the comfort of your own home right here.

(Speaking of which, I wonder why John Baggott's not listed as one of the Sensational Space Shifters on Robert's Facebook site. Is that just an oversight or he's more a collaborator than 'official' member or what? Just wondering...)

Some more rave reviews of the Mountain Jam gig are flowing in (5-6-2015):

Robert Plant Plays on at Mountain Jam as the Fog Rolls In

by Chris Kissel June 6, 2015 12:37 AM

The magic festival moments people talk about years later are the ones where nature and performance conspire together — and during Robert Plant‘s performance at Mountain Jam last night (June 5), when a wall of fog rolled in, that moment was upon us.

It’s not just because it was visually stunning, which it obviously was — but Plant’s performance already had a kind of veil over it. Plant does modified versions of Zeppelin songs with his band, the Sensational Space Shifters, where heavy passages — like the classic headbanging chorus on “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” — are replaced by acoustic guitar, and rippers like “Rock and Roll” take on a slow, vaguely electronic sheen. Above it all, always, is Plant’s voice, essentially untarnished by the years. It was astounding how good it sounded.

A version of “Whole Lotta Love” — one of the hallmarks of Plant’s stage show in recent years — slowed to a standard Delta blues before bursting into the classic Page riff, and then slowed, and then burst forth again. By then, the fog had enveloped the stage, the lights forming thick columns that shot all the way up the mountain.

One song that broke through the fog — figuratively, if not literally — was Plant’s take on Bukka White’s 1940 “Fixin’ to Die Blues.” Plant could not have ever been in finer form than he was tonight, and if Friday’s performances — from Grace Potter‘s vocal-cord-shredding blues to Joan Osborne, of Trigger Hippy, and her soft, southern-rock soul singing — are any indication, his style of sweating out the blues on stage is very much alive.

Still, we couldn’t help but read “Fixin’ to Die Blues” as a meditation on mortality, if simultaneously a celebration of influence. ”Don’t mind dying,” sang Plant. “But I hate to leave my children crying.”

The Lioness and the Lion

by Tim Mack on June 11, 2015

Robert Plant, Grace Potter

Mountain Jam, Hunter Mountain, June 5

Walking by the man with the stuffed monkey on his shoulders and past the other man in a clown costume, rounding the corner in the rainbow vendor village by the Govt. Mule merch tent and souvlaki station, you start to notice what no one else at Mountain Jam seems to mind: the mud.

When the rains came on the second day of this four-day festival, the hemp shirts and tie-dye tanks gave way to North Face rain jackets and see-thru ponchos. Families with children pushed strollers through the slop and paid 10 bucks for two slices of pizza, but the mood never changed. This is hardly a revelation, but it’s clear the jam-band crowd are an easygoing bunch.

On Friday evening, the cheerful army of sandal-footed fans filled the sloped field leading up Hunter Mountain, spilling out of sponsor tents, VIP walkways, covered decks and even the base of the ski-lift towers as the resort completed its temporary summer transformation into a weekend Woodstock.

Grace-Potter2-_tm-199x300.jpg

Photo: Timothy Mack

The first of the big-name headliners this day was Vermont’s Grace Potter (left), who squeezed in the gig between nights opening for the Rolling Stones. Which, if you’re a musician, is a pretty good way to start your summer. She debuted a raft of new material from her upcoming album Midnight, due out in August, including one of the first public performances of the new single, “Alive Tonight,” a dance-floor thump that’s a far cry from the jam-band sounds of her early records.

With help from a reconfigured backing band—the Nocturnals are no more—the new songs fit in surprisingly well alongside the older material. She’s a high-energy, perpetual motion machine who spent so much of the night stretching the vocal chords, you wondered if she’d have anything left for the Stones on Saturday in Texas. With her signature series Gibson Flying V around her neck and her husband, drummer Matt Burr, backing her up, she dazzled with wicked slide guitar work all evening. The setting sun finally poked through the clouds closer to the end of her set when Warren Haynes joined her for a killer run through Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl.” Lady Baby Boomers and teenage girls all sang along with her set-closer, “Paris (Ooh La La),” and just like that she was off, leaving on a jet plane back to Mick, Keith and the boys.

Robert-Plant_tm-199x300.jpg

Photo: Timothy Mack

Night had fallen by the time the main headliner (left) took the stage, which was only fitting. Robert Plant’s regal stage presence wouldn’t seem proper in the full light of day. Even he couldn’t help but notice the fog drifting over the Catskills, rightly observing the show was “knee-deep in the Misty Mountains. . . . Well, it is, really.”

With his new band, the Sensational Space Shifters, Plant has found music that clearly energizes him. He’s also discovered new ways to sing old songs, and artfully danced between his fascinating new material and the Zeppelin classics the fans were desperately hoping to hear. There’s something genuinely comforting about hearing 16,000 people on a mountainside singing “flowers in her hair” over the acoustic guitar in “Going to California.” But the material off ofLullaby and . . . the Ceaseless Roar is not to be missed. Equal parts world music, electronica and blues guitar, “Rainbow” and “Turn It Up” can stand with the best work of his solo career.

Speaking like an Oxford professor on sabbatical, he incorporated history lessons on the Delta blues (“Spoonful”) and Appalachian folk music (“Little Maggie”) to remind his American audience how much our sounds have contributed to his. And then he gave his students “Black Dog” and “Whole Lotta Love.” No wonder this class is so popular.

The Golden God is a fickle god, or at least his management is: For Plant’s set, photographers were banished from the pit to the soundboard and bootleggers were ordered to take down their microphones (which at a fest like Mountain Jam is akin to telling Bon Jovi fans to leave the denim and hairspray at home). But a few minor eccentricities were a small price to pay to hear Plant doing the music you always wanted to hear him do and the music he should be doing at this stage of his career. His roar may be somewhat diminished, but the lion still cuts one of the most imposing figures in rock.

http://metroland.net/2015/06/11/the-lioness-and-the-lion/

I wonder what that first bit in the last paragraph is all about. Bootleggers are a staple at concerts, but maybe they were overt, or the mics were obstructing views? Maybe the photographers were getting in the way of audiences actually getting to see the band and vice versa. It's about that interaction first and foremost, after all. Perhaps an official compilation of the 2015 Summer Tour is being readied?! That would be incredible.

Set so far on the stream..........

Wanton Song

Turn It Up

Black Dog

Rainbow

Yellow is the Colour (Donovan) snippet into Going To California (Justin Adams having all sorts of problems to start with having that mandolin in tune....)

No Place to Go / Dazed and Confused

Lemon Song (Robert teases how Jack White got him interested in playing the song again)

LIttle Maggie

Fixin To Die (they really really rocked it up, harder hitting than a lot of versions i'd heard before, crowd looked to eat it up)

I Just Want To Make Love To You / You Need Love / Whole Lotta Love / Who Do You Love? / Whole Lotta Love

Encore:

Rock And Roll (dedicated to the milk maids of Devon!)

Didn't realized they'd totally gone basically back to a legit zeppelin arrangement on black dog again.....seriously my takeaways from the zeppelin songs thus far are that if he's going to play these songs and play em this way, just go ahead and do it with jpj and jimmy....his wails on black dog and wanton were very on point.

then again, the guy is in his 60s and these are the guys he wants to present this music with today. must just feel like a lower pressure environment for him, not having to deal with the weight of the world? But doing a high profile music festival like this and doing zeppelin songs in full zeppelin mode just might maybe induce some press pressure.......then again RP doesn't seem to care what anyone thinks and kudos to him for that.

and in all honesty, and this is one of the few sensational space shifters shows that I've actually viewed and they seem to have honestly hit their stride and have done a good job covering the history of RP while also brining in those trip hop influences and utilizing Juldeh and his African instruments at logical, cool places as a texture here and there. Also, RP seems to just be having so much fun and have a general camraderie with his guys and end of the day he strikes me as the kind of person who will only do something if he feels fully fulfilled and really gets on with the people he's working with and for now at least he seems quite pleased with this group of musicians.
