Support Bands

I don't have the answer, but perhaps folks that were there can fill in some blanks.

Generally speaking, from 1972 onwards, Zeppelin never had a support act.

I think Judas Priest opened up for them at a California show in 1977.

In 1969 they had many bands in 'support' at the several festivals they played. Also early on, they had Iron Butterfly in a crumbled support role, actually LZ WAS the support but blew IB off the stage, so at least in one case, at the Fillmore East, IB didn't even come out to play onstage.

That first tour in late '68 - early '69 LZ also supported Vanilla Fudge at their west coast dates. After that Led Zeppelin were the headliners.

Check out the various summer of 1969 festivals LZ played to see all the bands that played 'with' them. For instance the Newport Jazz Fest, Schafer Music Fest, and the Texas Pop Festival.

They toured with acts like Alice Cooper and The Who in 1969. In the 70s they got to where their shows were 3 hours long so they didn't have many supporting acts.

Great list. Took a lot of time and very comprehensive. Interesting that they opened for Jazz greats Dave Brubeck and Woody Herman. Why was Zep on the same bill? I see you left out the festivals, since you can't really consider opening acts on those I suppose. Not 100% sure about those.

It would've been cool if The Guess Who with Randy Bachman had been one of the opening acts on one of the early Led Zeppelin tours.

Bachman mentioned in a couple of interviews how he helped make the Led Zeppelin concert happen in Winnipeg in 1970, when it almost didn't occur.
