I'm 99 per cent sure I read the studio time was free in return for Zep using it and putting it on the map, so to speak, as they were a huge band and word of mouth would spread.

The studio was new and Sweden wasn't on the map as a recording mecca.

Can't remember where I read it, unfortunately.

    I remember reading that too.

Yes, and yet it was arguably the brilliance of Sir George Martin that was responsible in large part for that, IMHO.

I've always felt this way too, George was huge. Also as great as the Beatles were I don't think they were ever totally in the lead of innovation but whatever they took or learned from they absolutely made it better or just damn good. Dylan and others were doing the introspective songwriting thing before them, same with flower power and psychedelia. They added heavier guitar and more guitar solos after the guitar hero thing was already established by others. I think there's other examples of this type of thing but I can't remember right now.

IIRC, their gear had already been shipped to the U.S. before they postponed the tour. Still, you would think Page would have had a spare guitar laying about his house.

True but picking up a guitar around the house and playing with a band are 2 different beasts. You can practice 8 hours a day by yourself and still feel sluggish with the band. Still no excuse though, I guess they somehow could've still rehearsed with just the 3 of them to stay in shape.

Edit:  Someone might've mentioned this before but for Robert and perhaps all of them, no one knew how long it would last so maybe it was balls out all the time. I guess by 72 maybe they should've known they would be around for awhile. Robert did mention lots of times about tea, lemon and honey, maybe that was the extent of knowledge of vocal care back then. Like put a hat on or you'll catch a cold, viruses don't care about hats.

Agree but leaving for a planned summer tour is one thing...  leaving after you, your wife and 2 young kids were almost killed in a horrific car accident is another. I think to call him out for this is wrong.. if he did leave them, reluctantly, no doubt in my mind he left them with people, family and or  medics to help out every step of the way..

Also I'm sure it was a joint decision between him and Maureen. They probably weighed everything and thought it was best.

  5. I liked Round and Round because it's a good pop song (it's a solid go-to drunken/stoned song because of the vocal melody) but I'v never heard any evidence of either guitarist being any good. Sure they can play the thing but is there anything that blows people away? I'm open to references.

Totally true. Never said, but the solo for the Rover sounds entirely composed. Jimmy is totally following the chord changes.

Same for the solo in Hot Dog( studio, of course). Live Jimmy never really got the changes right; most country solos  you

can't approach like blues solos, you really must change some notes with each chord change. Again, there is not much

info on how exactly these songs were composed or recorded.

ALS was certainly tricky for the rhythm section, and Jimmy's endless overdubs, recording absolutely. Composing sounds

difficult, but again not much info, but prove me wrong. Despite the song's many parts, guitarwise the song is not actually

that technically difficult(live) but studio or live Bonzo may have been challenged, heavy stamina  and complex parts.

Yes. Jimmy mentioned IMTOD was tricky in the sense that it's a long song so once they had the structure down it's still a very long take,  i mean if you get 3 minutes in and someone makes a mistake then you have to start over. Or as long as Bonhams' track is fine then you could keep that and overdub or punch in the corrections. But if there's lots of bleed then the mistake still might be heard. I would assume the same ALS and others.

I don't find ALS complicated in terms of the number of guitars and parts, I think it's pretty straightforward and quite clean in terms of composition, as in you can hear each part clearly and it's well spaced in the stereo spectrum. There's a lot of open space as far as depth/height/left/right goes. In most verses it drops to only 1 rhythm guitar, then a 2nd for enhancements, but it's not up front and in your face.

I highly doubt the band would have chose to print the full lyrics of Stairway To Heaven on one side of the 4th albums inner sleeve if they had no meaning..

I would say it's simply about one's hope of finding their Stairway To Heaven..

Which is simply a metaphor for one's hope of finding their path to happiness.

Which many of us can often take the wrong path, but their is always a chance to redeem ourselves and get back to the path we are supposed to be on. The lyrics also go into detail, which was mentioned earlier in this thread that the path to happiness (or metaphorically speaking, to heaven) isn't something that can just be bought.

That and Robert seemed to have a particular disdain(?) or irreverence to this song after all that went down with their eventual breakup. Even with the Oakland events I think he mentioned something about being onstage singing Stairway while all this was going on, "all this" as in Bindon and thuggery and violence that was around them. Once again who really knows. But yeah the song meant a lot to them. Come to think of it, I know they all spoke highly of it, pretty sure JPJ said it was his favorite or highest achievement but I don't remember Bonham saying much about it, I'm sure he did though.

Led Zeppelin did make the correct decision to disband due to Bonzo dying, since the sound would not have been Led Zeppelin anymore, as well as him being so close to the members, they were pretty much family. I'm a Led Zeppelinist and a Musician and have to agree with the decision that Page had made in 1980. Led Zeppelin will always be my number 1! All their studio album are great, all live albums, Coda, and studio companion albums, and all performances never put on albums with no errors are superb, all songs! God Bless Them!

    Long Live Led Zeppelin!

It was the 3 of them that decided to which Grant agreed they did the right thing. No way it could've went any other way but especially for Plant, that was a knock out punch you don't get up from.

I think what they could've done had JB not passed would be spectacular, if they got their stuff together, along with Grant. Just referencing Page and Bonham's discussions on making a much harder album than ITTOD. Perhaps ITTOD was the wake up call for Jimmy to get his act together. Do some short tours, spend more time in the studio.
