  1. I've often thought about this but basically this is a great catchy song that was mysteriously left of the album even though it's the title track. A song like The Crunge made it onto the album, which I consider to be one of their weaker efforts.

They also never played it live or not to my knowledge anyway, which makes you think they may not think highly of it. But then it has featured on every 'best of' that has been released.

So a song that was left off of it's original album and never played live, but ends up on all the best ofs? Any thoughts?

  4. Hello Mr E,

I just did the complete read and as a long time time fan, nothing new. The photos are great and the press releases, pull outs, etc are nice. But I was not overly impressed.

In the preface he did state that the best way to experience the book would be to play the corresponding album while reading each chapter. And he did have a great take on the media's response to LZ. However, there were a few comments that did not need to be part of the book.

My next read is When Giants Walked The Earth by Mick Wall. :book:

Thanks, Deborah. I've read it myself now and I agree. It's not a bad book - I like all the pictures and pull-out bits of memorabilia but there was nothing new really. Considering it was supposed to be about the music I thought it could have gone into much more detail about the making of each song.

  5. Does anyone else find Jailbreak to be a really underrated song?

Yep. One of their best songs. It was originally included on the Australian version of the Dirty Deeds album, have absolutely no idea why it was left off the international version. It's crazy, considering it's probably the strongest song on there. I suppose it gets slightly forgotten hidden away on the 74' Jailbreak EP. They should have put it back into the new remastered CD of Dirt Deeds, at least as a bonus track anyway.

  6. These are from Mojo Classic - Led Zeppelin and the Story Of 1969 and make interesting reading:

John Lennon: "They sound alright. Jimmy Page has always been a bloody good guitar player"

Eric Clapton: "They were very loud. I thought it was unneccessarily loud. I really liked some of it, but a lot of it was just too much."

Pete Townshend: "I'm not one of their biggest fans, which doesn't mean that I don't like them, but means I don't really get into their music a lot."

Keith Richards: "I played their first LP a lot when I first got it, but then the guy's voice started to get on my nerves for some reason. I dunno why - I imagine just a bit too acrobatic for me."

  7. Before I start, let me slip into my Nomex undies because i'm sure to get flamed.

Most of the polls i've seen around here about LZ's greatest songs usually include ALS and I have a tough time with it. I just don't think it's one of their better songs. Sorry, but to me it's gets boring and I wouldn't even list it in my Top 20 of their library. Even on Presence, which I think is one of their better albums, i would listen to Hots On, NFBM or Royal Orleans long before Achilles. In fact, i can remember skipping over the song to get to FYL and RO back when it was a new record.

Geez, I know i'm committing a felony here, but I got to get it out.

I'm not a huge fan of the song either to be honest. It's a decent song but I don't think it's one of their best, and I don't understand why it's often voted as one of their best. It's the one 'epic' song of theirs that I find goes on for too long and outstays its welcome. It's a tad overblown I suppose. I much prefer the straight blues rock of NFBM.

  8. Regarding this list I posted, I think people need to look at the bigger picture.

Many of the artists above Zep have had longer careers, released more albums, released singles and/or had a lot more radio and TV exposure.

With that in mind, I think Led Zeppelin's UK album sales are outstanding.

I was going to say that's actually quite impressive. A lot of those artists are a lot more mainstream compared to Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin are very big in the UK they've just always managed to remain slightly more undergound by not appearing on TV or releasing singles which is cool I think. Where is that list from by the way?

  9. I only like the Bon Scott stuff too to be honest. They had veered away from their bluesy/boogie feel by the time it got to Brian Johnson and he has a even screamier style of singing which I don't really like.

  10. Well... Im learning a lot in this forum, so:

I don't know much about Deep Purple history, so I want to know which is the best CD for a beginner?. For now my favourite song is Highway Star, i like My Women From Tokio.

    These are essential:

    Deep Purple In Rock

    Fireball

    Machine Head

    Made In Japan (Live)

    Burn

You could start with In Rock and work your way through.

  11. Just bought this:

    l0029875.gif

It comprises of their first three albums. They're all terrific and I have to say I really like their first album especially even though their sound is less developed. It's just really good rock 'n' roll music plain and simple.

  12. I should buy more Aerosmith. I've got their greatest hits which just covers their 70s era and also Permanent Vacation and Honkin' On Bobo. Has anyone else got Honkin' On Bobo? They do some good rocking blues covers, pretty good album.

  13. Tea for One

they may have said that Presnece is their favorite but I dont buy it for a minute. After all, doesnt everyone on this board agree that Plant changes his mind like the weather?

I've read that Physical Graffiti is Robert Plant's favourite zep album. I've also read the interview where Jimmy Page states Presence as his favourite album and I think people forget that his reasoning was because of the circumstances in which it was made not necessarily because of the quality of the music.
