  1. Also, iirc Portland Place is a street in London. Plant was still a struggling singer. How and why would he have been in London in 1967?

Missed this for some reason..RP was on a mission.. "15 Nov 1967 : Robert Plant, a nineteen year old Wolverhampton pop-singer visits the office of the Charge d'Affaires of the Republic of China in Portland Place, London, to hand in a letter expressing his interest in the cultural revolution, currently taking place in that country, and offering his services and that of the Band of Joy to the Republic. In his letter he said: "We are prepared to play for a period of time, free of charge, as we feel very strongly about a united world."

  2. According to Chris Welch in his book 'Power & Glory' Robert completed three tours of England with BoJ in 1967, however I have only been able to confirm two dates (using quotes from a Robert Plant interview published in the Oct 23, 2005 Sunday Mail as a reference source):

Ayr Ice Rink in Ayr (1967)

    YMCA in Kirkaldy (1967)

Edited to add: I have Harry Barber's Band of Joy book...if I can dig it out it may reveal additional details or possible leads.

Thanks..any clues are most welcome :-)

  3. A solo gig for the Plant/Bonham duo..I realise this doesn't fit in with the pre/post Zep theme but an interesting side project nonetheless.

My maternal grandparents lived on the Glebe Farm Estate and every Sunday we would go to visit them and if the weather was good my brothers and I would go down to the Rec for a kick about..their is a very good chance we were there when this match was on..if only I had known

  4. Great strides have been made but for me Robert's pre-Led Zeppelin performance history has become of a train wreck at the moment. I have found no less than three discrepancies in the Barber book when compared against adverts in other sources:

2/8/68 London, Marquee Club according to 'Led Zeppelin - The Press Reports' by Robert Godwin

London, Speakeasy according to 'Band of Joy' by Harry Barber

2/23/68 London, Marquee Club according to 'Led Zeppelin - The Press Reports' by Robert Godwin

Dudley, Broadway Club according to 'Band of Joy' by Harry Barber

3/8/68 Hampstead, Westfield College - Dining Hall / Bar according to 'The Lemon Tree' (Dec '94) (fanzine)

Erdington, Mother's according to 'Band of Joy' by Harry Barber

I have the 2 Marquee gigs listed in "London Live" by Tony Bacon if that's any help.

I guess we'll never know the answer unless we find overlapping dates for the 2 bands. Harry Barber (Band Of Joy roadie) claims that the BOJ played at Mothers on April 4, 1968 (which is the same date that Obs-Tweedle played the Woolpack Restaurant). If someone can find evidence that the BOJ played at Mothers on April 4th, then I think it would close the case

The Mothers gig I have just put on here is for the 12th April 1968..might I suggest that an eight day discrepancy may be due to relying on memory.

If their is any specific Midlands gigs I can look for please let me know..I know the Walsall Teacher Training College would be nice :-)
