  1. Sadly, on this date back in 1979, Jimmy gave an extremely poor performance on a night when he should've been at his best. I'll always wonder exactly WTF was wrong with him that night.

His playing in Copenhagen and the 1st night at Knebworth was very good, but for this show, yuk. I can't listen to this show.

Some people are so lost in the moment they can't hear the bad performance. You'd think they'd be listening, but they seem not to be.

Reminds me how some deadheaded types just twirl and twirl away, while the noodling often goes way out of kilter.

That perception of 'off kilter posting' doesn't seem to be lost on the 'twirlers' of this board though.

    Imagine that.

  2. I've seen, and have, some fairly elaborately packaged bootlegs out there. Some people just like the physical product with photos and liner notes that can come with these discs. Alot goes into the manufacturing of these particular offerings. The 'companies' buy tapes from people who've either recorded them or acquired them-illegally,immorally or otherwise because they're in demand.

Often time the 'holder' of the tapes haven't let copies out, or very few. In this case if the money's right they sell these. They get out and then someone puts copies on various download sites. Right or wrong, if this didn't happen ALOT of what those who detest the practice would NOT have many of their shows or outtakes etc.

Just because a person taped a show, doesn't mean they have to share it with anyone or sell it to anyone. Then we who like to have it would suffer. Those who buy these when that's the only way to initially get them do ALL OF US a favor when THEY put them on mediafire or megaupload or rapidshare or DIME or whatever.

And it's NOT just the money that makes this bootlegging 'immoral', it's the absolute violation in several cases of taping when the perfomer forbids it. Whether traded among collectors freely or with compensation (extravagant or just B&P) is taking someone else's art and dealing with it unauthorized.

So even you all who have boots FREELY are committing a 'SIN' in the eyes of some artists who forbid this practice. The only collector's out there who CAN HAVE a CLEAR CONSCIENCE would be those who have recordings by artists that don't mind tapers or actually encourage this action.

So go thru your collection, check the policy of EACH performer and if you have any ROIO of theirs who forbid this....throw away your stuff !!

Personally, I'm not gonna worry about it. I have several boots from one of my favorite artist's, King Crimson (Robert Fripp), and he's ADAMANT about illegal taping. Oh well I'll just live with being a 'sinner', but won't hark on those who collect either. But if you're opinion is so narrow about the practice, monetarily or otherwise, you need to scrutinize what you do and be consistent. Speak out and toss the tapes or collect away with a free conscience ! :D

    Blah blah blah....

  3. There are at least 2 versions, 'Presence Production' which I have (B&W cover), and TDOLZ (colour) which is about 2 mins longer according to Ramble On. I have to say that my version is by no means the worst 77 recording I've heard - there are some EXTREMELY shitty ones - so I'm guessing you've not heard many 77 shows, Oracle?

Anyone know whether the TDOLZ version is significantly better? Or worse?

I've heard several and have some....but my Destroyer, second night is an old one. Must be a copy of a distant generational tape.

Not being a huge '77 fan, I haven't upgraded to a better sounding one. I have the "Listen to this Eddie" and "For Badgeholder's Only" as far as Millard sources and I'm good with those. Also have some of the soundboards, so I'm set on '77. I'm on the watch for more '69-'71 shows, in good quality.

  4. I see there are alot of pro-opinions on the sound of the 4-28-77 recording. I should reitterate that in MY collection, it rates as a pretty lousy sounding one. Plus, maybe my copy is from lesser sources, and probably is.

  5. Perhaps I could ask you a favor and find a song or two for me that goes way back? Manfred Mann;s Earth Band. Song title is Father of day Father of night. And perhaps time permittting, Claire, Gilbert O Sullivan? Or And now one that will really get a charge out of some and humiliate me. Partridge Family I woke up in love this morning. :P Oops, one more, Gary Pucket and the Union Gap Lady Willpower

Find them? You mean like putting the names in google and seeing the results ? :P

Or scouring 45rpm racks at garage sales and seeing if I spot one or two of them?

I think all I'd find are Donnie and Marie singles. :(

  6. I love going back and re/discovering artists I've either overlooked or wasn't exposed to very much. Here's one I'm listening to and will gather more of his stuff and he has nearly 40 years of music to 'discover' !! I've heard his music in bits and pieces, mostly in movies, but time to check out his cd's.

    I'm diggin' it.

  7. Looking at the background I am trying to get a glimpse of Charleton Heston in an astronaut suit.:D

He's down there with his 2 other fellow astronauts !

Someone obviously slipped him a mickey after capture !

Then he finally came to his senses and VaVaVoom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Struck gold with Kim Hunter ! :D Her savagery wooed him !

  8. Can't agree with you on that one, I think its a very good sounding recording. Too bad about the tape cuts.

The performance from the 28th blows the previous night out of the water.

I'm not talking about the performance, and I still contend the recording is SHITE !!!

Not a big fan of '77 either so that might have some bearing, but very little. Over the years I've grown fatigued with lousy recordings and just don't care for them anymore, despite the performance.

  9. I'm not one for collecting every LZ boot, especially the lousy sounding ones no matter how GOOD the performance is. I'd have to say the worst sounding one's I have are from 1969-1970.

    Miami Feb. 14, 1969

    Buffalo Oct. 30, 1969

    Helsinki Feb. 23, 1970

    Hamburg Mar 11, 1970

Some of the audience sections of Orlando '71, Newport '69 and Japan 9-24-71 (overloaded bass) sound pretty bad.

Even some of the '73 soundboards sound crappy to me..and I'm not talking about just the dry ones..but

    Liverpool 1-14-73

    Buffalo 7-15-73

The audience one from Jan. 30, `1973 called Plant's influenza doesn't sound good.

Cleveland April 28, 1977 sounds like shit.

  10. ^ The security was probably due to Dweezil's dad being pushed off the stage, and nearly breaking his neck, at The Rainbow back in '71 by some nutball who said Frank was eyeing his girl too much during the show!!

He was some overtestosteroned futbol fan!!

I recently saw ZPZ and it was just amazing. How 'underknown' by the masses, while other's get such high praise, the vegetable doesn't far fall from the vine as Dweezil plays with the chops of his dad.

Dweez himself should be in the top 10 of that "best electric guitarist" list on that other thread. But too many would go, WHO ?

    Get exposed!!!!

  11. Heavy Seas Big DIPA...a double IPA from the brewery that used to be Clipper City in Baltimore (they're still here, just changed their name). At 10.5%, it's a heavy beer, not too bitter, really tasty!

Since I only have to navigate from the couch to the bed, I'm considering having another biggrin.gif

Whew!! That 10.5% is a heavy brew! Really that's about a Barley Wine.

IPA's by definition are stronger than the average beer. At least 6.0% ABV and usually up to about 8.0%, whereas the average brew is only about 4.5%-5.0%. What cracks me up is when states that have peculiar alcohol laws brew their 3.2% beer and some even call them IPA's. They're clueless.

On the note of double IPA's, here's a nice one I've had that wasn't too incredibly heavy.

  12. Ever tried Chimay, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Westmalle, or other Trappist beers? They're still pretty sweet (typically), but they are balanced by spices. I usually prefer bitter beers, but if I had a choice between a great IPA and a great Trappist, I'd go with the Trappist.

While Fat Tire is an American interpretation of a typical Belgian beer, the Trappist beers are the absolute best Belgium has to offer. We're talking about monks who have devoted over a century to perfecting the art of brewing.

I would try ANY beer, not sure how I'd like a Trappist though. I don't care for 'spices'. I like a hoppy beer with JUST water, yeast, hops and malt. NO Adjuncts. Can't stand 'em at all sweet either.

You wanna drink monkEY beer go on ahead !

I've truly found my faves in American microbrewed IPA's. They're all different from region to region, brewer to brewer and love to sample locally when I travel.
