  1. Welcome is a really beautiful and soulful record. A prototype for the Latin fusion sound. In fact, last summer I played a gig with Santana's master percussionist Chepito Areas and he's still a MF'er on conga and timbales.

I've seen Carlos live overr 30 times and have met him on several occasions. I asked him a question about the effect of drugs upon musicians. He had a great line- " Know the differtence between self-expansion and self-deception."

  2. Glad you enjoyed the read Grand and Octagon. I retained my ticket stub which was to be honored at the August 2nd make-up show. A second show was added for August 3rd. A close friend of mine had copped 3rd row dead center for the added show. I purchased a single ticket from him for $45. To say I was thrilled was an understatement.

One week to the day of these shows the heartbreaking news of Karac Plant's death was announced. I knew immediately that it would lead to the tour's cancellation and threaten the band's very existence. Only then did I return my tickets and collect a refund. I took a financial loss on the August 3rd ticket. Zeppelin then basically vanished for 2 years. A total disappearance.

  3. Neat story, thanks.

I'm curious about one thing. When Jimmy fell ill, how did the crowd react when it was announced the show was cancelled?

Were people refunded? Or did the promoter argue that since they played for an hour, their contractual obligation to perform was met?

The fans reaction was one of quiet concern. Not really knowing why Jimmy had collapsed mid-song, Page was eventually walked off stage by fellow band members to applause. We waited for about 5 minutes until it was announced the show would be re-scheduled. All tickets would be honored at the future show. This show was to be performed on August 2nd with an added concert the following night. It was never to be, as Robert's son passed one week prior to these intended shows.

  4. One of my favorite musical highlights is Jimmy Page's reappearance with The Firm. Emerging from his post-Zeppelin somnolence after close to five years, I attended my first Firm show on March 7th, 1985 in Milwaukee. We were let in early enough to see Page checking his violin bow and guitar sound from behind a black curtain. There was really no one around and I couldn't believe Jimmy was out there prepping his own sound.

The image of Jimmy stormimg out from behind his amps to begin Closer is brain -ingrained. He looked possessed as he slayed City Sirens. It was a fucking HOT show!
