  1. Me too! I've downloaded the whole SB file, listened to it and by the end of the day I ordered my copy from Japan. At 350 bucks my friends and family call me nuts, but hey ...during my teens I could only afford one LP in two months, let alone a double bootleg LP. you only live once.
  2. In the same interview Jimmy says How many more times from RAH is a clear winning version and he was considering the stuff from Southampton University refectory. We shouldn't forget that his framework of reference is the multi tracks he had at his disposition to compile a chronological live album. Soundboards (Seattle, Long Beach, Vancouver) or great audience tapes (Earl's Court 5/18 or Maryland, L.A 77) are excluded ...alas

  4. 'Eat a Peach' is doing a nice job, I think. I have mixed feelings about the Moonchild label. They are cashing in on Winstons remastering talents...but on the other hand at ten bucks a piece, I could not resist ordering Badgeholders (excellent), Get Back to L.A 2 (excellent) and Blueberry Hill (very good). The Copenhagen 79 warmups also look very tempting. For the rest I must say I'd rather wait for Brannon (BootledZ) to review/compare them. Graf Zeppelin, Empress, Scorpio Japan,...sometimes they release pure gold, but often it's garbage.
  5. For the record there are three Scorpio labels. The first and most important label was (I believe) American and they were responsible for top notch releases in the early nineties like Studio Daze, Olympic Gold, Jennings Farm Blues, Seattle Supersonic and A Secret History. The 'Millennium' Scorpio, Strider is referring to, is Japan based and they released pretty good material. The infamous Scorpio label with the bad name is a copy cat label from Europe. They mainly focus on re-issues of soundboard material from Empress Valley and they are instantly recognizable by their hideous artwork.
  6. Because that's a highly subjective matter. Some diehards prefer a needle drop copy from top notch vinyl sources like Japan 1971 or Badgeholders others prefer tape. For the legendary Blueberry Hill boot, some people prefer the dry mono source (previously issued by Akashic or Eat a Peach), whereas others prefer the more lively Cobla stereo source mix. The only consensus is that all collectors hate over-tweaking, silly noise reduction, etc...

  8. Brannon of Bootledz is extremely critical about the latest incarnation of the Hampton board tape on EV. Is Jonesy's bass still distorted?
  9. the first release of the Hampton 71 SB was entitled "One More Daze" (Dynamite Studio). This 1992 release featured only the first half of the SB reels: Immigrant/Heartbreaker, SIBLY, Black Dog, Celebration Day, That's the way. The other tracks on this disc were Moby Dick from the Long Beach 1972 multi track (cut before the outro), White Summer (Julie Felix TV broadcast 1970) and the rare encore from Detroit 73 "Dancing Days" (incomplete). The six Hampton tracks featured a weird stereo separation: Bass guitar and the bass pedals in the left channel, Vox, drums and guitar were in the right channel. There was a severe distortion in the bass, but the other channel also suffered from clipping (digital?).

Good ol' fashioned fanzines from the nineties, Xolo...Early Days and Latter Days (Andy Adams) a short lived British fanzine covered the what and whereabouts of Scorpio's Studio Daze and Jennings Farm Blues in 1990. At that time only What is and What should Never Be and Dancing Days where released on silver.. But the tape box of the multi track tape clearly mentioned Moby Dick. A few years later Hugh did some research on the origins of these tapes and published an interview in Proximity.
  11. Only one of these 2" multitrack reels 'escaped' from the vaults in 1990s (Reel 3 from Long Beach). This was not a plain soundboard, but a professional recording from a mobile studio(most likely Wally Heider's). Seventies soundboards are either two track on 1/4" reel to reel or audio cassette. If Moby Dick from the Long Beach show is cut before the coda, this doesn't mean it's incomplete. Sound engineers mostly work with two alternating decks for live recordings....so the Moby Dick coda would be on reel 4 The 30' Long Beach segment was copied onto DAT and brought into circulation on Scorpio's "Studio Daze" in 1990 and Dynamite Studio's "One more Daze" in 92.   12. I must admit, I've trimmed the live version of IMTOD with audacity to a more enjoyable 6' length. This version works really well on my personal Zep live compilations

I'm pretty sure that The Song Remains the Same and eventually HTWWW will enjoy the same treatment as the BEEB Sessions. but as far as the original chronological live project goes, DVD covers almost everything Jimmy was mentioning during that interview (with the exception of the 'winning version of No Quarter at Earl's Court)
  15. Those three incomplete Soundboards from the US 1971 tour (Hampton, Toronto and Orlando) are by no means audiophile's delights. A bit lacking in the cymbal department , but my empress 2 disc set is good enough. It was packaged 'bookstyle', like JVC's audiophile XRCD's (splendid sounding Jazz classics from the Prestige, Pablo and Riverside rosters) , but for quality I think all are more or less the same. As for the MSG 73 , no idea...I downloaded that one lossless Agnes ago and don't remember the source.
  16. Not my favorite, but there are quite a handful of great undisputed renditions of Thank You. Southampton 1973 with a majestic mellotron intro Orlando 1971 MSG 1973 Montreux 1970 check them out!

  18. strange, I kinda liked the instrumental trio version of Kashmir on Brutal Artistry II. Punchy groove...just Fender Jazz bass, Drums and an electric guitar
  19. in the vinyl days releasing a complete show was never a fetisj. Remember the set list of classic live lp's such as Live at Leeds (Six tracks, three of them covers!) or Lou Reed's Rock'n Roll Animal. Made in Japan and Yessongs were tour compilations rather than 'honest and faithful' reproductions of one show. Jimmy rolled out the mobile studio to the Southampton University Refectory to capture the intimacy of one of their UK 73 shows. As I stated here before, Southampton's first hour lacks the fire and I can't believe Jimmy even considered it as a 'warts and all' triple album. He did however mention the possible inclusion of one or two tracks from Southampton on his live chronological album in the late seventies.
  20. Nick The question the Osaka show was not that it was deemed sub par and therefore unworthy for release. The big issue was that the balance of the Multi track recording was off. Robert mentioned this during an interview at the advent of IVs release in november 71. He stated the balance was' worse than a bootleg' and that the band had made better recordings recently with 'an ordinary Revox' (now we know he's refering to Orlando, Toronto and Hampton SB recordings). A more indepth account regarding Osaka 71 is available in Lewis/Pallett's Concert File (page 156 of the 2nd edition). The infamous recording was reconsidered for official release in 2003.But alas 'How the EAST was won' companion release to HTWWW and DVD was shelved for the second time. A great pity, but somehow since technology always gets better, maybe Jimmy knows how to fix the imperfections sometime in the near future...fingers crossed
  21. +1 I had the cobla 2cd version in the mid nineties. But 'fairly clear above average' is a bit of an understatement...the sound is quite ballsy, well ballanced and " three dimensional" ( quote Luis Rey). The only minor flaw is the Chanel fluctuations in some parts Enjoy!
