From Music.MyNC.com: Dex Romweber Duo to celebrate album release at Cat’s Cradle Simply put, Dex Romweber is a local legend. But Dex’s reach goes far beyond the Triangle; in fact, he is credited with being a massive influence for The White Stripes’ Jack White. “His songwriting, along with his love of classic American music from the south — be it rockabilly, country or R&B — is one of the best kept secrets of the rock ‘n roll underground,” White said. Perhaps best known for his incredible work with the Flat Duo Jets, Romweber has an equally impressive solo repertoire that includes 2009’s acclaimed album Ruins of Berlin. The time now comes for the Dex Romweber Duo to release the follow-up to Ruins of Berlin. That album, Is That You In The Blue?, will see a release July 26 through Bloodshot Records. “With a mix of originals and obscure nuggets from rock and roll’s dusky back closets, the DRD romps through the sweaty cinder block studios of Memphis of the ’50s, channels street corners on the wrong side of town with existential blues and instrumentals that’d find a home in a Tarantino spy flick,” a press release explains. Is That You In The Blue? was recorded at Southern Culture on the Skids Rick Miller’s studio, and features contributions from members of The Old Ceremony and Savage Knights, as well as Rick himself and fellow SCOTS Mary Huff. To kick-off the album’s release, Dex Romweber Duo will be joined by Birds of Avalon at Cat’s Cradle on July 22. Tickets go on sale June 10 for $10 in advance. If you missed Dex Romweber Duo on Sessions at Studio B back in ‘09, check out the performance over on the video’s landing page.
  2. Goes to show a band can maintain it's original line up and still suck. Hopefully, Jack Douglas can breathe some life back into the beast but at this stage of the game I think it's highly unlikely. I'd love to see them prove me wrong.
  3. No word on whether or not they'll be playing NC on this tour but if the tix are high, I'll be passing on it. Gillian Welch has a new album out this month and will be touring behind it this summer outside of her shows with Buffalo Springfield. I'm sure ticket prices for her show will be much more reasonable. If you've never heard her, you it owe it to yourself to check her out. My favorite record of hers is Time (The Revelator).
  4. Aerosmith to Start Recording First Album in 10 Years The full band - including Joe Perry - will go into the studio next month Aerosmith perfroming on August 12, 2010. Kevin Mazur/WireImage By ANDY GREENE Joe Perry has confirmed that Aerosmith are going to finally begin work on new album next month. "Whole band has plans to go into the studio with Jack Douglas second week of July to work on new Aero CD," he wrote on Twitter yesterday. Perry didn't bother showing up at Aerosmith's initial writing sessions earlier this year, and relations between him and Steven Tyler were so strained that a new album seemed unlikely. Perry's not speaking to the press, but his post shows he's gotten on board with the project. (Douglas produced many of the bands biggest albums of the 1970s, including Get Your Wings, Toys In The Attic and Rocks.) Earlier this year, Aerosmith recorded a series of demos in Los Angeles. Tentative track titles included "Bobbing For Piranha," "Asphalt" and "Legendary Child." "They still sound like Aerosmith," wrote Rolling Stone's Brian Hiatt in a recent cover story about Tyler. "Slinky, riff-rock, big -chorused soul ballads, leaning more Seventies than Nineties." A representative for Perry told Rolling Stone that the guitarist was "unavailable" for the sessions, but while promoting his new gig on American Idol this year, Tyler repeatedly told the press that he and Perry were exchanging angry text messages. 5. I've never been a huge fan of "Candy Store Rock" but I'm sure it's someone's favorite. Also can't say I've ever gotten all the hate for "Hot Dog" or In Through the Out Doorz.
  6. I'm saying you're ignorant in general.
  7. Read your opening statement in this thread, that alone shows your ignorance. Not to even mention your opinion of what you consider to be "stinkers".
  8. Does the packaging for the 40th Anniversary collection include CD trays or are they just cardboard slipcases? If it's the later, they will scratch your CDs.
  9. Hopscotch has added 14 bands to this year's lineup, they've also posted the schedule.
  10. You've completely disqualified yourself with this bit of ignorance.
  11. If it's on cable it will be replayed ad nauseum. I know I've seen it at least once so I'm sure you'll have ample opportunity to see it again.
  12. Maybe she'll chose something appropriately funky like "Custard Pie" or "Trampled Underfoot" and have Page guest star.
  13. It was just brought to my attention that Workingman's Dead was released 41 years ago today. I'll never forget vying for a copy of this at the Tape Deck in Goldsboro, NC more years ago now than I care to remember. I scored this and my friend ended up with a copy of Skeletons From the Closet.
  14. It's been a long while since I saw the first Hulk movie but if my memory serves, this one is a vast improvement on it.
  15. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers praise Hall & Oates at nearly every opportunity. Personally, they were never my cup of tea but I have lots of friends (mainly musicians) who admire them.
  16. Even though I've been a regular Letterman viewer through the years it was Anton's work on Ace Frehley's solo album that really caused him to register on my radar (he was also in Frehley's Comet). Other members of what is now known as "the CBS Orchestra" were also all over those Kiss solo records back then. They're all consumate studio musicians handpicked by Paul Shaffer.
  17. Chuck Berry was being played on Country radio in those days so it was an entirely different musical landscape back then.
  18. I just noticed that Furthur (the latest project featuring Weir and Lesh) will be here on the same night as the New Riders of the Purple Sage in July. It would be cool if some sort of collaboration were to happen between the two.

    AC/DC

From Time.com: Heavy Metal Under the Sea: Sharks Act Calmer When Listening to AC/DC By: KAI MA © Image Source/Corbis The great white shark—the toothy, aggressive predator known for its “man eater” depiction in Jaws—has long been a source of fascination. But when it comes to musical preferences, great whites are just like the 50 million-plus humans who turned AC/DC's Back in Black into one of the best selling albums of all time. They're fans. According to Australian news outlet ABC, Matt Waller, a tour operator in Neptune Bay, discovered that great white sharks act more calmly when listening to music by AC/DC, the Aussie heavy-metal band that reached its peak during the 1980s. The two songs favored by the sharks: “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Back in Black.” After Waller played the songs using underwater speakers, the sharks became “more investigative, more inquisitive and a lot less aggressive." “They actually came past in a couple of occasions when we had the speaker in the water and rubbed their face along the speaker which was really bizarre,” he said.
