I've noticed that but in this case, as someone pointed out earlier, you need to look no further than the source.

New Gillian Welch Record Coming June 28, 2011 Karl Walter/Getty Images By Kim Ruehl, About.com Guide It's been eight years since Gillian Welch released her last album, Soul Journey, and her fans have been chomping at the bit ever since for its follow-up. Over the past few weeks, news has been dripping out as critics have begun to receive their review copies. But it was NPR who broke the news last week that Welch's fifth studio album will release on Acony Records this June 28, and will be titled The Harrow & The Harvest. No word yet on what the track listing will be, or if there are any special guests on the disc (aside from, of course, her long-time guitarist David Rawlings). Since releasing Soul Journey, Welch has toured extensively and appeared on a number of other people's recordings, including this year's Decemberists record, The King Is Dead and the 2009 release from Rawlings - A Friend of a Friend. While on tour with the Dave Rawlings Machine, Welch would come out and do a couple of her own songs separate from the rest of the band, including some material that's quite a bit newer than Soul Journey, leaving fans anxious for the new release.
  5. Never saw the movie so it sounds like I'm not missing much.
  6. A few years ago I finally heard Jeff Beck's version of this which is when it dawned on me that his rendition was more of the inspiration behind this cover than the original by Stevie Wonder. The Beck clip is of pretty poor quality but is still well worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M4SAvWHrkU&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBpSeyk1z4o

  8. Looks like you were using the Link button to try to post those clips. If you use the one labeled "Media" it'll do the trick. Not sure if you've ever heard Whatever Happened To Jugula? by Roy Harper and Jimmy Page or not but there's some very fine acoustic picking on there.
  9. They're one of those bands I've developed an appreciation of over years yet I've never really been a fan of their music. I know that when I used to hear "Fight for Your Right (To Party)" ad nauseum back in the 80s I never figured they'd be in it for the long haul. My nephew played me Paul's Boutique back when it first came out. Even though it wasn't my cup of tea I could appreciate the way they crafted all those samples into some very cool sound collages. It showed you could use samples but still be original.
  10. Years ago I was watching the Steve Earle documentary Just An American Boy with some friends. During one of the songs in the movie, "Christmas Time In Washington" he attempts to summon the spirit of Woody Guthrie with the refrain, "come back Woody Guthrie, come back to us now". Upon hearing this, one of my friends said, "what in the hell is Woody Guthrie gonna do?" Good point. Even though they're out there, folk singers don't seem to carry as much weight these days as you rarely, if ever hear about them. This has more to do with the suppression of protest music by the media than anything else because there's definitely some pissed off people out there expressing themselves through song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew6LAiuTp3U It's Christmastime in Washington The Democrats rehearsed Gettin' into gear for four more years Things not gettin' worse The Republicans drink whiskey neat And thanked their lucky stars They said, 'He cannot seek another term They'll be no more FDRs' I sat home in Tennessee Staring at the screen With an uneasy feeling in my chest And I'm wonderin' what it means So come back Woody Guthrie Come back to us now Tear your eyes from paradise And rise again somehow If you run into Jesus Maybe he can help you out Come back Woody Guthrie to us now I followed in your footsteps once Back in my travelin' days Somewhere I failed to find your trail Now I'm stumblin' through the haze But there's killers on the highway now And a man can't get around So I sold my soul for wheels that roll Now I'm stuck here in this town So come back Woody Guthrie Come back to us now Tear your eyes from paradise And rise again somehow If you run into Jesus Maybe he can help you out Come back Woody Guthrie to us now There's foxes in the hen house Cows out in the corn The unions have been busted Their proud red banners torn To listen to the radio You'd think that all was well But you and me and Cisco know It's going straight to hell So come back, Emma Goldman Rise up, old Joe Hill The barracades are goin' up They cannot break our will Come back to us, Malcolm X And Martin Luther King We're marching into Selma As the bells of freedom ring So come back Woody Guthrie Come back to us now Tear your eyes from paradise And rise again somehow If you run into Jesus Maybe he can help you out Come back Woody Guthrie to us now

It wasn't born out of the Go-Go dance scene of the 60s but it did evolve from "Disco Duck" as you said? Obamayomama.
  12. Funny you should say that as I recently read an article (which I'm now unable to find) that did a side-by-side analysis of Parts 1 & 2. The results were that some of the same things from the first movie happen again in the new one and at nearly the exact same time. In other words, the author was pointing out that that the new movie comes off more as a remake than a sequel.
  13. Slobberbone covering "To Love Somebody", originally by the Bee Gee's.
  14. R.E.M.'s version of Vic Chesnutt's "Sponge" which originally appeared on Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation - The Songs of Vic Chesnutt. Lots of great interpretations of Vic's work on here from The Smashing Pumpkins to the Indigo Girls and Soul Asylum. Sadly, Vic died on Christmas Day 2009. He went into a coma after taking an overdose of muscle relaxants earlier that same week.

We all know the birth of rap can be directly traced back to Rick Dees' "Disco Duck".
  16. R.E.M. still feels fine By Gllian G. Gaar Choosing an album title can be a tricky business — particularly if you’re in the happy position of having released a lot of them over the years. So getting an outside opinion is always helpful, especially if it comes from someone who’s pretty creative in her own right. Photo courtesy of Warner Brothers Which is how Patti Smith ended up choosing the title of R.E.M.’s latest record. Smith was in the studio with the band, adding her unmistakable vocals to what would become the album’s closing track “Blue.” “We couldn’t decide on a title for the album,” the band’s guitarist, Peter Buck, recalls. “And I just went, ‘Hey Patti, what do you want to call the record?’ Michael [stipe, R.E.M.’s lead singer] has a bunch of stuff written in his notebook, and Patti went through them and said, ‘Well — Collapse Into Now.’ And I thought, ‘Well, Patti Smith named it for us — that’s great!’” To read the interview click here.

Just don't ask him about the origins of Disco.
  18. I think Dylan is a lot like Townes Van Zandt in that regard, sometimes his work just comes across better in the hands of other artists. For Dylan it would have to be Hendrix taking "Along the Watchtower" into the stratosphere. For Townes, it would be Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson's reading of "Pancho and Lefty". That said, it doesn't lessen my appreciation of Dylan's original versions one iota, it only goes to show how his music has a certain universality to it. One of my favorite covers is this one: For some reason the original video doesn't exist on YouTube but you can see it here.
  19. Yes. In addition to his solo shows he's also performed Zeppelin songs when sitting in with other artists whether it be Merlefest, Bonnaroo or other festivals. Agreed. Since Zeppelin broke up he's done some Zeppelin songs but I'm sure he's had an eye more towards his solo material. I seriously doubt what Zeppelin albums he's drawn from even figure into his decisions to play those songs.
