  1. Late night talk shows frequently have guests on that aren't part of the mainstream. Conan O'Brien recently had the Drive-By Truckers on for a return visit. There's also Austin City Limits and Soundstage on PBS that air late nights on Saturdays in my area. I tuned in SNL recently for Wilco but the show itself was largely unwatchable.
  2. I think I drove a few friends nuts several years back when I got on a big Surf music kick. Yes, it can be quite repetitive but at the time I just couldn't get enough of it. As for my family, most of us are on the same musical wavelength. Same for my girlfriend but she does have a low tolerance for a few artists. I'm also not a huge fan of everything she likes but our common ground far outweighs the stuff we don't care for.
  3. Second time watching this one. Funny how they're depicted holding hands in the above photo but that never happened (at least that I noticed) in the movie. It's also a bit strange that some of the other covers to the DVD I found online didn't show them holding hands at all. Saw this over the weekend at a local Imax theatre. Quite the experience considering I don't think I've ever seen a 3-D movie before. I think I may have seen Jaws 3-D when it was shown on TV but obviously it wasn't very memorable. The U2 concert film was also my first experience with Imax. It took a little getting used to but once I adjusted to it I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Considering the cost of tickets, it may also be as close as I ever get to seeing U2 in concert. Too bad they didn't let us keep the Bono glasses.
  4. Fleetwood Mac surprised by Sheryl Crow claim DETROIT (Billboard) - Sheryl Crow's recent claim that she would be working with Fleetwood Mac surprised a lot of people -- including the members of the classic rock group. Crow, 46, who's friendly with Mac's Stevie Nicks, told the AOL music website Spinner.com earlier this month that she and the band "definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we'll see what happens." "I think we were all a little surprised (Crow) was announcing that to the world with such certainty," Fleetwood Mac principal Lindsey Buckingham, 58, told Billboard.com with a laugh. "We have talked about the possibility of bringing another woman into the scene to kind of give Stevie a sort of foil and shake it up a little bit. (Crow) was certainly a name that has come up. We'll have to see." Nicks, 59, has been the group's sole female member since Christine McVie, now 64, retired from the band in the late '90s. Buckingham said the group, which last toured in 2004, is considering returning to the road in the first half of 2009, possibly with some new material. He said that he has "a ton of new stuff" that could be used for a new Fleetwood Mac album, its first since 2003's "Say You Will." Buckingham -- who's just released a new concert DVD, "Live at the Bass Performance Hall," from his 2006-07 solo tour -- is also planning another solo album for this summer. Recorded with members of his touring band as well as Fleetwood Mac co-founders Mick Fleetwood, 60, and John McVie, 62, he said it "has a little more of a rock feel to it" than his most recent effort, 2006's "Under the Skin." "It's just another group of tunes that hopefully will translate to stage, and hopefully we can get some more (solo) dates this summer."
  5. Personally, I don't think it's ever safe to assume anything (I'm guessing you've heard the old saying about "assume"). When I first started visiting the old board I did notice a very strong resistance towards new music but over the years I saw some of those very same people come to embrace it. When the board was recently revamped it was like starting from scratch with a lot of members sharing that same mindset. Still, there's a handful of board members who do like new music but we're definitely in the minority. As for "classic rock", I never bought into that. It's a radio format that plays only old rock n' roll but is not a genre of music into itself. Speaking just for myself, I've always been into "new" music and I hope that never changes.
  6. He played back in the early 90s at a small club along the NC coast, Carmine Appice was even playing drums with him then. When he signed the cover of my They Only Come Out At Night album he put a Carmine-like mustache on Edgar.

  8. What does this being a Zeppelin forum have to do with anything, especially since this is the Other Bands section? Speaking just for myself, just because I post here doesn't mean Led Zeppelin is my favorite band. They're also not the only artist I listen to. I don't listen to new or old music only, I listen to a mixture of both. Some of my favorite newer artists would be: Nada Surf Old 97s The T's Wilco Black Crowes Drive-By Truckers Pearl Jam Ryan Adams and the Cardinals The Tripwires The Silos Bill Kirchen and Too Much Fun Kasey Chambers The Yayhoos Tres Chicas Minus Five Tift Merritt Patty Hurst Shifter Terry Anderson & the Olympic Ass Kickin' Team
  9. Exclusive Barnes & Noble edition with bonus tracks
  10. I like the Beatles as a group, not individuals so I don't have a "favorite". That said, I've never understood the lack of love often directed at Ringo, he's a fantastic drummer.
  11. At some places $10 is the sale price. The list price is around $20.
  12. I don't think there has to be any "connection". I mean, The Pretenders opened for Neil Young once here but that didn't lessen my concert experience any. When I saw ZZ Top, the Nuge and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (backed by Double Trouble) were also on the bill and it didn't lessen ZZ Top's stage time any. Well, except when they had to give Ted the hook when he tried to go over his allotted time. ZZ still turned in a full set though. If it's a three way bill like that (or larger) generally the concerts are started earlier.
  13. Would you feel the same way if Zep were to tour with a Plant soundalike?
  14. I'm not sure where one would ever get the impression that my "comments and tastes are predictably confined" as I love all kinds of music: rock, country, bluegrass, ska, reggae, rocksteady, big band, world, folk, cajun, and yes, even funk. In the days of cassettes I loved nothing more than mixing up all these styles (and more) so even I never knew what was coming up next.
  15. Vintage Truckers from 2003 shot the day drummer "The EZB" (aka Brad Morgan) married Kimberly (a very fine artist in her own right). Be sure to watch until the very end for a priceless comment from Cooley.
  16. I can't speak much to their newer studio albums but when I saw 'em on tour in support of Mescalero a few years ago they were still in fine form.
  17. You must have missed this part of my post: *Edit: that subject line should read "2003". Yep, it's been a long time since they turned in an album but not that long. I just hope the DVD is as good as side one of Fandango. That's a mighty tall order though.
  18. *Edit: that subject line should read "2003". Yep, it's been a long time since they turned in an album but not that long. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/articl...t_id=1003727816 ZZ Top Gary Graff, Austin With a live DVD, a new album and some touring on the docket, ZZ Top is revving up for a busy year. While he was hanging out at this year's South By Southwest Music + Media Conference in Austin, Texas -- where he performed at Rachael Ray's Feedback party and psychedelic rocker Roky Erickson's annual Ice Cream Social -- Gibbons told Billboard.com that bandmates Dusty Hill and Frank Beard were back in Dallas "in the studio, preparing a new series of sessions of new material" for ZZ Top's first studio set since 2003's "Mescalero." Gibbons says the band hopes to finish the album before the summer. "The challenge of the studio is much different than live appearances," Gibbons says. "The live experience is hundreds of distracting events. The studio is one microphone. It's one event, so it raises our level of attention to a place where we can really come together as the band we started off as. It's almost a small club environment, so it's really fun." Before we see the album, however, ZZ Top is planning to release a concert DVD taped Nov. 1, 2007, at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas, near Dallas. No date or title has been determined yet for the Eagle Rock release, but Gibbons says the final product is "untouched. It's full of mistakes, and that's the way we like it." Gibbons also recently taped a guest appearance on the May 16 season finale for the Fox TV series "Bones" -- "I thought I was gonna be the blind date or the boyfriend but, no, I have to be the dad," he laments -- and says that in addition to the recording, ZZ Top is starting to line up its 2008 road schedule. "Hopefully we'll be able to return to the road as early as June -- even, if we can pull it off, into May," Gibbons says. "The European window of weather you can get out in is very short. So they are ready to rock. And we might pick up a string of dates through the U.S., too."
  19. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/beat/index.p...p;tb=1&pb=1 Chapel Hill Schoolkids: Fare thee well New to the Cat's Cradle schedule, an April 5 show (thanks, Chris!) titled "GOODBYE, SCHOOLKIDS RECORDS" -- in honor of the soon-to-close Chapel Hill institution and featuring Hammer No More the Fingers, Schooner and other fine local acts. Proceeds will benefit the Orange County Elementary Music Program. Meanwhile, Schoolkids is not going gently into that good night. Bounce over to the chain's MySpace and check out an amusingly hostile little commercial that concludes, "Some people still like CDs...everyone else is dumb."
  20. These guys are more like a mixture of funk and rock n' roll. Back in the 70s they were referred to as "the black Led Zeppelin". Probably because their version of Smokey Robinson's and the Miracles' Mickey's Monkey bore more than a striking resemblance to Custard Pie. Still, a very kickass band though and one of the best live bands I've ever seen. They're still touring to this day but are more popular overseas than in their native U.S. (they hail from Atlanta). Mother's Finest "Baby Love" (Live 1993) Mother's Finest
  21. The lyrics are the same but the instrumentation runs the gamut from bluegrass to country. It's actually very well done and as I said, much more uplifting than the original.
  22. http://www.nme.com/news/ryan-adams/35289 Ryan Adams 'on second draft' of new album Plus singer pays tribute to Bob Mould in new blog Ryan Adams has launched a new website and blog to chart his experiences while writing new material. The new website is dradamsfilms.com/ - referring to his full name David Ryan Adams – although the blog is called "Totally Bored The Musical". So far Adams has revealed that he has avoided too much writing thanks to a bout of "spring cleaning which lasted for exactly a week, give or a take a week". He also shared with readers his plans to write a "a fictional blog, by someone who maybe loves metal but totally misunderstands the style and content of metal completely. I mean, in the best way". Also on the site, Adams has paid tribute to Bob Mould's last album 'District Line', declaring: "This record and this brave man and his words saved me, again. It is endless and I listen to this at least three times a day. I have to say it is my favourite Husker/Sugar/solo record of his." As for his own album Adams revealed: "I have to write this record. I mean, this is the second draft. By second draft I mean, this is a whole new batch of tunes. The last batch was fine and maybe even some of it was rad. But my head did not catch on fire. At least not totally. I am sure I burnt more than a few by accident but all that house dust acted as a wonderful repellent. So anyway, off to work I go."
