  1. Even though I was a fan as of my first listen to "Laughing" in 1983, I never did get to see them in any clubs.

I was pretty lucky, as not only did I get to see them perform in a small club (Bowery Ballroom, NYC), but it was just after Up had come out. They played a lot from Up and IIRC, they didn't tour for that album.

  2. Pearl Jam cover "It Happened Today" from R.E.M.'s last studio album, Collapse Into Now on Wednesday night in Calgary, Canada. Vedder contributed backing vocals to the song which was written about the passing of Vic Chesnutt who committed suicide on Christmas day in 2009.

Thanks so much for posting that!

Today I listened to Accelerate and Collapse today in memoriam, but I remain quite saddened by this news. Regardless of all the intellectual arguments being posed for their break up, emotionally it's going to be rough for me, for awhile at least. R.E.M. opened up a whole world of music to me. Before them, I listened to Pink Floyd 24/7. For a long time, they were my favorite band. (pearl jam is my favorite these days, which makes that video all the more touching for me) Saw them twice on the Green tour, once on the Monster tour and once for Accelerate. They were artsy, gutsy, intellectual, political, emotional, cool, danceable - they had it all. I will greatly miss their music.

  3. Yes, you did but at that time the clip hadn't been posted to YouTube yet. I'm not sure what the overall consensus is but I'd think someone is more likely to click on a embedded video than to go to another site to watch it. It's much more convenient anyhow. It was never meant to take away from your post.

Good point. I was totally kidding anyway. :)

  4. It doesn't get much "cheerier" than this but then again R.E.M. haven't exactly staked their reputation on making "cheery" music. In fact, they've done all but totally disown this song. They wouldn't even allow it to be included on their best of collection from the Warner Brothers era, In Time:

I don't know why. I loved (and very much still love) that song. It's fun to sing and is very uplifting. Great vocals from Kate Pierson too.

  5. That's gorgeous music. Love those little bells and sounds in the background.

But man, that's a rough song to listen to when you're lonely.

Can you find me something else from the artist a little cheerier?..........thanks missy

Sorry, when I want cheery I look to the Beatles or maybe Stevie Wonder.

Loneliness sucks though, so I know what you mean. All too well, in fact. :console2:

  6. Hey, I've been sampling a ton of R.E.M. over at Amazon. I haven't even gotten through all their records yet. But, I already think I found my favorite!

And it may surprise you because it wasn't mentioned much in the suggestions. It's the album "Up" from 1998. Now I have no idea how this record fits into the different phases the band may have gone through over the years. But I like it a lot because to my ears there is a touch of .....I guess you would call it trippy/slightly psychedelic sound to it. Is that crazy?

    Absolutely. Totally crazy. ;-)

Seriously, you are the best judge of what you like obviously, so it's good that you did some research yourself.

I have a friend who hates REM but loves UP. I happen to like it a lot, but find it to be second tier REM. Reveal I also enjoy, but like a bit less.

  7. I just heard Collapse Into Now again and feel it's an excellent R.E.M. album. Great variety and thankfully, the mastering isn't as over the top as Accelerate was. Man that thing was LOUD.

  8. Thank-you! So "Lifes Rich Pageant" could be considered like Led Zepplin's IV perhaps? Not musically, but I mean as far as the record everybody needs to have if you are an R.E.M. fan. Similarly as in Pink Floyd fans always have "Dark Side of the Moon." Well, you probably get the comparison I'm making. I appreciate the suggestions and I will check them out becuase I'm in the mood for a new band (new to me, lol.)............... :) missy

That's a tough call, mostly because I see Pink Floyd and Zeppelin as having multiple albums that you need to have.

I'd suggest getting Lifes Rich Pageant and Automatic for the People used over at amazon. They should be dirt cheap and since they are both albums you "need" to have, they are also very different, as is Accelerate for that matter.

If only plan on getting one album (I shudder to think :) ), I'd say get the Eponymous compilation. Has all their early "hits."

  9. Anyhow, they never hit my radar again. So tell me what CD would you suggest as their masterpiece for me to give a listen to?

    ................. thanks missy

Of the early ones (in fact, of all their albums), Lifes Rich Pageant is their masterpiece. (high energy, inspirational, timeless)

Of the middle ones, Automatic for the People. (classic, beautiful, dark)

Of the latest ones, Accelerate. (hard rockin' comeback album)

  10. Oops my bad. I thought the title of the song was called Time. I just remember it was a black and white video of Michael Stipe and it looked like he was jumping into the the crowd and the song was kinda slow and the video was in slow motion . Also in the lyrics he was singing "tick, tock". It was on their Automatic for the People CD and was played alot on MTV back in 1992. Does this sound familiar?

    yup, that's "Drive." B)

  11. Perhaps but it wasn't a big radio hit like the other songs Melanie mentioned, nor was it ever a single. At least not to my knowledge.

No, I don't think it was a single either. However, I think it is a popular album track. I love that live version with Red Rain/So. Central Rain - incredible.

    Yes, I did. Thank you.

No problem. Just want to make sure that you got it. :)

  12. My apologies. I thought you were referring to the songs on Hey Jude (aka The Beatles Again) vs. the songs on Past Masters Vol. II.

I was, actually. (Damn Mercury retrograde)

As far as I can see, the first two tracks are on "Can't Buy Me Love" and the remaining ones are on Past Masters Vol 1 and 2.

Yes, it's the song selection I like (which I'm pretty sure I stated in a previous post), I don't recall ever having said anything about them being alternate versions.

No, you didn't, that's only me, it's not my mind. (That is confusing things) ;)

Have you heard the Complete Rooftop Concert? I got it this past christmas (as a download) *ducks oncoming tomatoes*

    It's a lot of fun.

  13. If you're referring to the tracklists themselves they are not identical. As for the sound quality, I'm not sure what the source tapes were for Past Masters. It's been my understanding that the Beatles catalog has never been remastered. That said, their upcoming deal with iTunes is supposed to be a remastered version of their entire catalog.

Hey Jude (aka The Beatles Again) Tracklist

    1. Can't Buy Me Love

    2. I Should Have Known Better

    3. Paperback Writer

    4. Rain

    5. Lady Madonna

    6. Revolution

    7. Hey Jude

    8. Old Brown Shoe

    9. Don't Let Me Down

    10. The Ballad Of John And Yoko

By the way, the above album is available on CD (with 9 bonus tracks) on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/Beatles-Again-Jude-B...n/dp/B000XLU4D4

Well, what I was trying to ask is "are there any recordings on "Let it Be" that aren't available on either Past Masters 1 or 2 or any of the regular album releases?

I "found" a copy of Let it Be earlier and my ears tell me that all of these songs/recordings are already in my collection as part of the aforementioned albums.

What I think I just figured out was that you liked the song selection. Originally, I thought you said you preferred it because it had alternate versions.
