  1. ^ Nice cover! is this an all Zep issue? I would love to peruse the Shinko Music Photo Archive. They consistently have 1977 shots that are rarely seen.

edited to add: that 1977 shot is from Pontiac. You can see the cameraman behind Jimmy.

  2. If Zeppelin were to tour today, do you think they'd try to keep prices down or inflate them to insane amounts ala the Stones?

They would have Stones ticket prices. Not because they want to but because they could.

  3. Management kept the financials super secret but the wiki on it sheds some light:

Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant conceived this series of concerts as an effort that would reassert Led Zeppelin as the dominant band of the decade. Fifty one concerts were scheduled over a three-leg period, for 1.3 million ticket holders. It was Led Zeppelin's biggest ever tour, and tickets sold at a rate of 72,000 a day.

Led Zeppelin's 1977 North American Tour was a massive fiscal success, as the band sold out large arenas and stadiums. On 30 April they performed to 76,229 people at the Pontiac Silverdome, a new world record attendance for a solo indoor attraction, beating the 75,962 that The Who attracted there on December 6, 1975 for Opening Night, and grossed $792,361.50 (also a record breaker). Lengthy stints were spent in New York and Los Angeles, where the band performed six sold out shows each atMadison Square Garden and the Los Angeles Forum. In New York alone, the band spent no money on advertising for the gigs, relying solely on street demand to sell out the shows, and enough ticket applications were received to sell out a further two nights had time permitted.

Dave Lewis, an expert on the band, considers that this tour,

with its staggered itinerary and massive arena and stadium venues, became the blueprint for which the likes ofBruce Springsteen and U2 would base their multimillion dollar tours during the Eighties and Nineties. Back then, though, Grant and Zeppelin were making their own rules as they went along. The unwieldy scale of just how big the Zeppelin experience had become was encapsulated over those 44 1977 shows.

If Zeppelin grossed $792,361.50 for one show, imagine how much they grossed for the six nights in Los Angeles and the six in New York!

add to that the rest of the tour - staggering amounts of money.

  4. The only evidence that is proof enough is when there is a video in my hand.

However, at least for me, I am not comfortable dismissing totally the information that is available. I can tell for others it makes more sense to dismiss the possibility and declare that specific events were not recorded. Completely understandable.

Regarding Houston, the only thing I can offer personally, first hand is a reporter from KHOU who did two live remote news broadcasts from The Summit during the Led Zeppelin concert told me that the TVs in the concession and common areas were on the entire time at The Summit during the Led Zeppelin concert and during one of the live remotes he intentionally placed himself so that one of the monitors was behind him over his shoulder in the background during his remote. Additionally, David McDavid of Irving, Texas told me that he saw the monitors on in The Summit during the Led Zeppelin concert. Also, through the years more than a few people have said they saw a video of the Led Zeppelin concert in Houston, that it was played during a New Year's eve bash each year. A tape of high quality and impressive audio. The guy with the concert tape in Houston is a high profile former athlete and it would not surprise me if he has the Elvis tape as well. He has a lot of things. Also, personally, I have heard audio from a different source than the one that circulates for Houston. It is stereo and multitrack-ish sounding.

Regarding Zurich, the only thing I can offer personally is a collector in Palm Beach told me this past December that a Zurich video may surface soon as he had been contacted as a possible buyer by a private collector in Montreal. On his iPad he had a :30 seconds sample he was sent for consideration, a source different than what circulates for Zurich. It was stereo, impressive and sounds multitrack-ish.

If I had access to them, they would be public. I have no doubt that people who read this forum know more than what they are sharing, wish they would. I have never understood the not sharing mentality.

WOW! They don't happen to have a news broadcast archive do they?

  5. It's not a rumor, I saw his post with screen grabs and samples with my own eyes. The guy took a beating for a while over at RO.com for teasing everyone. The guy got it back in the 1980s from a guy who sold video at record shows in the Great Lakes area. I believe he had some 1975 8mm film too, perhaps Montreal 1975?

"Zepp4Life" even brought extra copies of the Pontiac '77 DVD to play for other "friends" while in England for the "02" show and I believe he even showed it ot other firends at some Zep gatherings.

At first the guy was going tor shsre it with everyone but that only lasted about a day!

Was the 8mm clear? or out of focus?

  6. I'd like to publicly commend Knebby for her contributions to this thread thus far. Scanning cuttings & articles is a very time-consuming endeavor, but in so doing the history of the band is further preserved.

I save all of these (and others) using a standard naming convention, date/publication/origin. For example 1977 07 31 Sun, The (UK).

If there is more than one article in the same publication I add a parenthetical suffix, for example 1977 07 31 Sun, The (UK) (1). If the

publication (or date) isn't known I use (Unknown), for example 1977 07 31 (Unknown).

Is there any interest within the forum to see the articles & cuttings after I have performed restoration work on them? An example:

    1977Unknown.jpg

I'd like to also thank Knebby - some rare photos posted! thank you!

and Steve, I know I would not be the only one interested in your archive.

If I may request, please start with your 1977 file.

    :D
