  1. I recently binge watched the first 2 series of The Vikings on a rainy weekend.

It's not historically perfect, but it's pretty close. Certainly not for the squeamish (I walked away after one particular episode and nearly gave up)

And if binge watching includes watching the first 3 episodes of Outlander about 10 times each, then i'll also include the delicious new Outlander series.

I've read all 8 books by Diana Gabaldon, which is the story the tv show is based on. Absolutely loved all the books and am thoroughly enjoying the series too.

  2. Feeling better today after a seriously bad hangover yesterday.

Hope the hangover was worth it and you had a seriously good night :drinks::party::drunk::banana::burp::faint1::zzz:

Dinner tonight ..... Traditional English roast beef dinner, with soggy peas and yorkshire puds. As much as I love and usually eat various cuisines from around the world, I occasionally get back to my birth roots and love a good home cooked roast.

  3. I do think when women travel, especially solo, they need to be extra cautious and careful, particularly in the third world.

As one of three parents on this forum, whose daughters are travelling overseas ..........

Shush! We don't need to hear our fears reinforced.

    ;)

  4. Saying goodbye to my baby girl at Sydney International Airport as she flew away to Florida via L A for 7 months.

My daughter (Veghead) is flying out next week for 6 months of trekking around various remote areas of Indonesia, Thailand, Nepal and India. I know this will be an amazing adventure for her, but I will be so worried and scared. Why can't she choose a nice safe touristy area, instead of tribal villages accessible only by canoe ...... aarrgghhhhhh.

When she boards that plane at Sydney airport, my post will be in the 'Unhappy' thread.

I hope your daughter has a wonderful safe time in the States and an incredible experience at Disney.

  5. I never had any personal contact with pottedplant, but I know members here, who I have great respect for, hold this lovely lady in high esteem.

I'm shocked and very sad that one of 'Our Family' has passed away.

My deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

  6. Crikey! All this kerfuffle over a little donut?

I'll give Whoopie Cat and CP a pass, as they live in countries with no donut tradition

We have donuts here, but nothing elaborate, nor anywhere as much as you have in the States. We eat them more as a little snack mid afternoon and never for breakfast.

When I was in America a few years ago, I did have a weakness for Cinnabon's cinnamon rolls.

Actually it turned into more of an addiction

  7. Not saying get your nails painted but at least put some cream on the heels and do something about fungus - it's not very nice to show off to the world. My dear friends in Oz have told me that people also walk barefoot and go to work wearing flip flops. So yes, I'm prepared for when I go there next year.

Ok, so you mean basic foot care. I agree, cracked dry heels look terrible. I've never had foot fungus issues, so I don't know anything about that.

I'm surrounded by beaches where I live, so I think walking barefoot on the sand acts as a exfoliant and the salt water is cleansing.

I don't know about Aussie's wearing thongs to work ...... that sounds like one of those crazy myths made up about us

And if you're coming here for a holiday, you'd better learn the language. They're called 'thongs', not 'flip flips' ;)

  8. Now that it's summer in the northern hemisphere, people who wear sandals, flip flops, etc. without getting a pedicure. While we're on the subject, flip flops should only be confined to beaches or pools, period.

Not everyone likes pedicures and painted toe nails, myself included.

Don't ever come down here, because you'll see lots of unpainted toe nails in sandals and thongs (flip flops). Thongs are our summer essential and are worn everywhere.

  9. Recently I was out shopping and a mother walked passed me severly scolding a little child of 5 or 6 because she had to escort her to the restroom so she could go potty!

Children are beautiful, pure, delicate beings and should be treated as such!

Children are indeed beautiful and a joy, but they can also be annoying little shits.

Any parent will tell you about the frustrating experience of taking a child shopping. We walk past a restroom and ask the child if they need to do a wee, they say no. We ask again, are you sure? they answer no again. Then at the most inopportune moment, the child then declares they are busting and need to immediately go to the restroom. This usually happens in the middle of the supermarket, when we have a shopping trolley full of groceries and is of course, a long way from the nearest toilets.

  10. Kingzee, I know exactly what you mean .... and this is a touchy subject.

But I can relate it to my own personal experience. Many years ago, when my kids were young, we were struggling financially. We had a mortage and were both working our butts off, we were barely scraping through each week. I remember being in a K.Mart type store and I was umming about buying a few dollar cheap top for one of my kids. I can't remember if i decided to buy it or not, but as i went past the check out, I saw welfare recipients handing over their government assisted cheques, buying brand name extravagent clothing items. Handing over $500 bucks without a thought. These same people had govt assisted new cars, brand new homes, daily free childcare, their kids were paid to attend school and recieve an education, while we paid school fees. They received bonuses for owning a pet, had their own assigned free bus transport , which was not available to anyone else and so many other benefits that were unatainable to us mere people who were working our asses off, paying taxes and struggling to survive, week to week. The fortnightly day their assitance money was provided by the government, was the day everyone stayed clear of the local town area ........ because the recipients spent the whole day in the local pubs and subsequently, all hell broke loose. Luckily they also had free legal help, because it was often needed.

The lucky recipients of these benefits, had the fortune of having a different colour skin.

But, if we dare speak out against any of this, we were labelled racists.

  11. Never heard of it. I have only tried one Peruvian herb and it did my nose in ;). What is the flavour/smell then C?

I have honestly never tasted anything else like it. I couldn't even begin to describe it's unique taste. If I had to, i'd say a cross between mint, coriander. lime and basil, but that doesn't even begin to describe it.

Google Huacatay and find some amazing recipes. Grow it alongside Kasey and also works as an insect repellent :D

  12. Has anyone here eaten huacatay? That green Peruvian black mint herb, which, when made into a aji verde sauce and served with chicken or potatoes is soooooooo amazingly powerful and unbelivably unique.

Just one little miniscule dollop on your plate, has you thinking whoa! what is that, wtf is that flavour, what the hell is that???!!!!!

I love growing unusual vegies and herbs in my garden and hucatay is my latest magnificent freak.

I love it, both for eating and simply running my hands through the plants as I walk past.
