  1. Ok my last word on the claustrophobic vocals.Another angle. They are recorded very dry and close.Imho
  2. Ok perhaps I was a bit heavy with the piss take quote and yes they were fans of JB but as Page has mentioned about The Crunge “nobody saw the joke”.Yes the drums are sensational laying down a great groove but I just feel the whole track is poorly executed and yes Plant’s vocals are recorded too close giving that claustrophobic feel. All this sounds so much better on the remaster.I still have my original pressing from the 70s and I am sorry I don’t like it.Sorry just my honest opinion.BTW I always liked Hot Dog which is more fun.
  3. Yes The Crunge was a piss take on James Brown that just didn’t work.I like it a lot better on the latest remaster because it seems to breathe better than claustrophobic production on the original vinyl.Still it could do without that cheesey keyboard riff and somebody could have found that confounded bridge instead of falling in a heap at the end.
  4. I have thought long and hard about getting the four symbols tattooed on my forearn but not on my back,I want to see them.It would make a change from the devils, skulls and naked women I have elsewhere that i have had for twenty years plus.
  5. I love Dy'er Maker and i like the latest re master of the Crunge but I still think it could have wound up on Coda and thrown in Walters Walk instead.Houses is lovely album, sought of laid back in a way,a good summer album, but it lacks a rocker like WW.Anyway, would love to have heard Tea For One live, and just hear what Page 's solo would be like.
  6. I agree with the musicianship and complexity and I am musician and its hard one to nail down, but I don't like the way it was recorded particularly Plants vocals, and where it is on the album.I have no problem with Dy'er Maker.
  7. Musically they should have left The Crunge off THOTH.It just disrupted the flow of the album. On the latest re master it's a lot better.I know it was meant as a bit of a laugh but it should have been a b side or left till Coda. There was still plenty of material about at the time which ended up on PG.Fashion wise Page looked like a back up musician for the Bee Gees at Knebworth with his club disco garb. The band as a whole just didn't look rock n roll, for want of a better word.
  8. Haven't been here for awhile and been out of touch on all things Zep apart from some court case.Just read about BBC re master.I will be getting the cd version unless I win the lottery.I notice the comments above and question how can you improve on radio broadcasts as i believe the third was taped off a radio as the original studio tapes were wiped.I know my way around most studio technology but just wondering if the other discs are going to be any different, enhanced mono maybe?Doesn't look like ol' Jim will be strutting the stage soon, too busy twiddling knobs
  9. IMO i think for the most part the companions have been great but i can see where most fans have felt underwhelmed. The more tambourine mixes have been a waste of time but i am happy that they are there. As mentioned ITTOD has been the most disappointing with only ITE and Carouselambra standing out.Why on earth Page would put out lo-fi mono mixes is beyond me and yet he is reluctant to put out polished up bootleg rehearsals.I do however agree with Page that there couldn't have been two much left in the can and this will probably be the last of it as far as studio stuff goes.If ever my other favourite band Rush did a similar thing, which i am sure they won't,there would be no extra songs because they worked on each song till they got it right, similar to Zep.Perhaps more cowbell on YYZ Mr Peart.
  10. Read on the net somewhere recently that Blackmore was voted by the masses(not critics)as the most influential guitarist of all time, above Hendrix who was second.Page was fourth or fifth. Many of the voters had valid reasons for this. His technique is unquestionable,he invented that neo classical style to rock,,and wasn't afraid to try other music styles yet still retain his identity a.Apart from Hank Marvin and Duane Eddy(who made me want to play guitar)Blackmore was and is my first guitar hero.Hendrix was more of an innovator,no question,Page is stylistic inventor but could be very ragged technique wise(see sloppy player thread),Clapton is stuck in the blues and AOR,Van Halen blew eveyones brains for a few years but hasn't gone any further, etc.Zep and Rush are my fave bands but Black more is king.P.S.Just saw that Malmsteen guy recently,he owes Ritchie big time.
  11. Just like Royal Orleans I never gave Host On For Nowhere much mileage, but after hearing this mix its a relevation.Jonesy's bass line is a gas.
  12. Turner certainly blew it there.Insulting the missus not to mention the dreaded mother in law was the kiss of death.Turner's been rattling on about this for years about 'getting back with Ritchie' and 'he's ready to rock ' but I rather him keep going with Blackmore's Night than team up with this self opinated tossed again.
  13. Joe Lyn Turner blew it for me not because of the bland AOR that he bought to Rainbow but he claimed he was better singer than Ronnie James Dio R.I.P..Ripped up the magazine and threw it in the fire.
  14. Noddy had great whiskery sideburns.Only Trevor Bolder R.I.P. beat him there.
  15. Correct me if i'm wrong ,didn't ol Nod live across the road from Robert Plant.
  16. Slade Alive was the first album I bought with my own money(Saturday Evening paper round).I thought it was thumper and far removed from the Frank Sinatra, the Seekers,Being Crosby and jazz that was played in my house. After I played it on the family stereo my grandfather apparently went round to the doctor feeling ill.I was about eleven years old. Then I grew up and bought Deep Purple Made in Japan then maybe Zep3.Slade had some great songs and Noddy had an absolute belter foghorn voice that could strip paint.I still whip out a Slade cd for when I am in a drunken party mode.Better than AC/DC for those moods.Fave song,My Oh My.

    Rush

You lucky bastards.l'm grovelling here on the other side of the world, penniless, and seeing that set list for my other fave band which will be most likely their last 'big tour.Oh well, i'll wait for Dvd.
  18. Monochromatic agreed. It is a very straightforward album despite the adventurous spirit of ALS.No acoustic numbers, keyboards, ballads, etc, just guitar, bass, drums and Plant delivering for the most part a straight ahead performance.I remember when i first bought the album in 76 some of it just didn't gel with me,in fact I would get bored with it halfway through FYL.Royal Orleans I hardly played at all.Now all these years later I 'm giving it serious spins and looking forward to the re master since I have a lousy first generation cd copy and i was just about to replace it when these reissues were announced.I am not expecting too much for the companion disc,as mentioned elsewhere Page did all the overdubs in about 24 hours,so a few rough mixes is probably all we get. Those 'two new things' 'will most likely end up on Coda. Can't wait for Tea for One .Now ITTOD,that's gonna be interesting.
  19. I am 53 and have listened and played loud music all my life, not to mention played with drummers who are hellbent on bashing their way to China. Also worked in noisy factories for 27 years.I do have industrial deafness. However I feel there are some big improvements in the new remasters.HOTH is smoother, not as shrill,PG springs to life.I own ordinary stereoes x3 and a big PA system for band work.I have A and B'd all of the old and new remasters on all of these stereos. However I 'listen' to music,I listen to what each instrument is doing, etc, whereas my mate who loves Zep can't tell the difference because he doesn't listen as intently as me.To him a good song is a good song no matter what it comes it out of unless its a $10 tranny.I think it all boils down to how much you appreciate the music.Go with the new ones.

    Rush

Been a huge fan since 78.Bought and loved every lp but never seen them live because they have never been to Australia. And this tour could be the last. You lucky bastards.
  21. I had years ago an Ibanez double neck copy of Jimmy's.Now it wasn't a Gibson but it was still still a good guitar. But it was a bugger to tune.Once tuned it was ok but keeping those two necks in key was a chore.
  22. Someone gave me The Eternal Fire and Flashing and I bought Get That Feeling for a buck when i was a kid.I seem to remember having the In The Beginning volumes as well Are You Experienced and Smash Hits.I was 13 or thereabouts and i thought all of the above were great even some of the cheesier pop songs(well I was 13).I haven't had (or heard?)any Curtis Knight stuff for at least 25 years and I might just purchase it out of pure nostalgia and recall what I was listening to.Electric Lady land,Band of Gypsies and Rainbow Bridge came along when I was 15.That changed things.
  23. I remember buying a stack of live lps at a garage sale about thirty years ago .All live no studio and American/Canadian save for Wish one Ash Live Dates.Guess Who,James Gang,Grand Funk,Ted Nugent,Glass Harp,Grateful Dead,Santana(Lotus,Jap press),etc. The lot for under $20 in perfect nick with plastic sleeves. The seller said their my sons and he's bugged off somewhere. He must have really liked American rock and live lps.Strange.
  24. Got two Guess Who lps,a compilation and a live one,but they are buried deep in the shed in boxes and wouldn't have been played in at least 15 years(gives you a clue as to how long i've been married.)The live one'sgot them standing on stage in an empty hall,I think,I remember it was great .I will have to dig them out,and get the turn table going.
