  1. I want to personally apologize for that post, to you supraphonic. It was my error, that I thought I was contributing to a discussion about music. After reviewing all the posts you have made, I get a clearer picture as to what YOU EXPECT from members of this board.

not necessary at all ,i thought the clip of your playing was great but didnt relate to this particular thread, its a different genre, i like Evsters last post on this ,to the point and in the groove.

  2. You guys have got Bonzo's double bass all wrong. The reason it sounded like double bass is b/c he retuned one of the tom heads. Not sayin he didn't have fast feet, but alot of Bonzo's playin is easier than it sounds.

yeah i want to hear a tom hit with a stick sound like a 26" bass drum hit with a felt beater , but i do understand what your trying to say, your brave challenging the gods on this one.

I like John & Jason's style of drumming for Rock & Roll jamming. Some fans like double bass drumming for the speed. I ike the different styles demonstrated by different drummers. I suppose if you like double bass drumming and that is it try doing this. BTW I do not like the drum solo overall but it is entertaining how fast this guy can play. I think his name is Derek Roddy?

    Link

this style of playing using double bass drums has nothing to do with L Z or Jason !!!!.

  4. Your painting with a very broad brush. David Coverdale has been a singer of songs and maker of music his whole life and continues to do so. One particular era of his career

copped Robert's style but that's as far as it goes so far as I'm concerned.

well said, and i still think that Coverdale will be onstage with Jimmy before Plant.

  5. Couldn't agree more. Love your username by the way! There's no shame in using a double pedal. So what? So the old man had an amazing and impossible right foot!

You get comfortable with what you get used to, and you use it to get the job done. Whatever it takes.

Jason did a fantastic job! So he used a double pedal. I say big fucking deal. Was the performance not brilliant? Did the band not fucking prove it wasn't stoned hype legend, and put the Live Aid and Atlantic shit to rest???? Hell yeah they did! That's all that matters.

I couldn't care less if he used eleven pedals.

yay hey well said ,how good is jason now, just looking at some foreigner pics miss h put up from 78 the drummer had ' THREE bass drums ' hell jason can do all that with one .......

  6. :D

I'm chuffed to bits that Jason is now endorsed by Ludwig. What the hell took them so long??

Speaking as a drummer, a lover of classic American drums, a Zeppelin devotee and a guy who was at the 02 that night, it was a joy to hear the live Led Zeppelin with Ludwigs on board rather than a set of poncy DW's.

The words BONHAM and LUDWIG belong together.

As for double pedals - a testament to John Bonham's brilliance as a musician. Even his own flesh & blood (aka Jason) requires two feet to do what his father did with just one....

hey if you want a blast go to the "photos" section on the intro page, and look at the 'beat club' 3/69 shots Bonzo playing his Gretsch kit LIVE !!!!!.

  7. :D

well.. there you go.. it would be a massive coincidence for robert to have said 'braced' which, while technically a very usable word.. highly unlikely, especially as there is photographic evidence and reports of jason admitting (not that there's anything to be ashamed of) that he uses a double bass pedal.

either way with conversations like this that always bring out 'youtube' style comments like: 'i can play that' ..so what? a million guitarists, bass players, singers could probably all individually play a lot of the things that well known bands can but did they also join/make a band where the whole was greater than the sum of the parts? nope.. they've just played in their bedroom or played pub gigs..

being part of and contributing to a hugely influential band be it also producing and writing whilst also mesmerising audiences is something that few do..

jason had every right to play his father's drum parts however he saw fit in a way that allowed himself to be comfortable also..

it's understandable from a purists view that there may be shock value when talking 'bonham and bass drum' but i don't think anyone could ever really expect a clone of the great j.b. and all that it would encompass.

too true , who cares how many pedals and devices anybody uses , its how it sounds that counts ,i will bet that if bonzo was still playing today he would use it.

  8. B)

I think Robert said "double braced" as in most kick drums have feet with retractable spikes to hold them in place. Maybe Bonham kicks so hard that he needs twice the stabilizers. Remember all those parties where the band is playing on a cement floor and someone has to keep their foot on the cinderblock that is holding the bass drum in place?

:unsure: modern drummer magazine feb 2008 has a feature on jasons drums he used at o2 reunion ...... just for those who need pictures !!!. oohh a double pedal was used ..

  9. :D

Jason's a great drummer. Lots of great drummers use double bass pedals. Like someone else said, no shame in that.

John Bonham didn't use one...because he was JOHN BONHAM.

    Most people aren't.

Bonzo could do things that most drummers can't. It's kinda unfair to get down on Jason. It's not "cheating". He's doing what most drummers do when they want to get that kinda sound.

bonzo didnt use a double pedal because they were not invented back then ,he did have two bass drums for two gigs, then john paul jones hid one of them because he said it made bonzos playing unconprehensible !! as only jpj could say.

  10. :D

At the end of one of the songs at the o2 Robert was introducing Jason when he said "and his double bass drum pedal" this is a joke right?

at the end of the previous song jason did a short quick triplet roll with the bass drum, something bonzo was famous for using only a single pedal , jason uses a double pedal which enables him to strike the bass drum with both feet , of course robert herd the triplet and was commenting on him doing it with a double pedal versus bonzo able to do it with a single pedal.

    Nicely said..

Ahhh, the age old argument, I've been defending Mr Page on this for as long as I can remember. It's very easy really. EVH plays a lot of notes really fast, JP plays music, simple as that.

master quote ! you nailed it .

  12. :D

I've never heard Edward play any real soulful blues except for that Bluesbreaker project he did with Brian May and that was more shredding than real blues. I'll take emotion over technique any day.

now thats the most intelligent statement i have read on this forum. (aint no levy in Van land)

Zeppelin had a large entourage, many of whom were with them for years and years. I thought it might be interesting to talk about some of them - so I'll start with REX KING.

awesome post, does anybody know who the old effeminite was who was standing inbetween peter grant and the madison square garden manager when peter was balling out over the selling of pirate posters and t shirts , in the TSRTS film

    Rexy.jpg

Jimmy, Richard Cole, Rex, Knebworth 1979.

Rex came into the entourage as Bonzo's personal assistant because he was a friend of his. "When they were going on tour one day, I got a call, literally three to four days before the tour started asking if I wanted to go, and I went." Rex and Bonzo were pals and enjoyed travelling together - Rex was the only one to accompany Bonzo on his trip up to Newcastle to record his TV interview for Tyne Tees TV's "Alright Now" in March 1980; it was also Rex who drove him down from the midlands to Windsor on the day before his death in September 1980.

After Bonzo's death and the break-up of Zeppelin, Rex continued to work for Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, in addition to working on other tours including Yes, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, The Who, Bad Company, The Firm, Rod Stewart, and Elton John.He took a special interest in Jason's fledgling career and was spotted out with him a few times - including taking him along with Robert, Maureen and Carmen Plant to see Cozy Powell play with Whitesnake at Birmingham Odeon in 1982. He introduced Robert to his current manager Bill Curbishley after meeting Curbishley in Spain and hitting it off with him. He took Robert over to meet him several years later and the seeds of their business relationship were planted. Known as something of a ladies man, complaints were heard at the recording of Unledded that most of the girls in the front row (aside from Scarlet Page) were friends of his. Page and Plant apparently appreciated the view!

Interviewed around the time of Page and Plant, he explained that as their tour manager he was responsible for everything that production manager Roy Lamb wasn't. "I do everything on the daily running of the tour, all of Robert and Jimmy's stuff and all the bands stuff.."

Speaking about their rider, he said "Its absolutely minimal these days. A few basic things- finger foods, a few beers, soft drinks. Thers's no hard liquor or anything like that. Anybody can have what they want, but people don't particularly bother. The days when we used to go all out and have bottles of champagne, etc, they're all over for us."

Rex (centre background) laughing at Robert and the Oakland dancer

Rex continued to work with Robert when he resumed his solo career and has only recently moved onto other bands ( most recently Metallica) after they both decided they needed a change. Robert currently employs Dave Taraskevics, who he met through Peter Gabriel, as tour manager. Rex lives in Florida (as does Jason) but still works for Curbishley and Trinifold and is still friends with the surviving members of the band and entourage. He's a bit of a legend.

  14. Welcome to my thread, won't you come inside. Miracles may happen, every now & again.

This thread is going to be about UNSOLVED LED ZEPPELIN MYSTERIES.

I am the thread starter and these are my guidelines:

you will be placed on ignore.

    2. Anyone can post what THEY believe to be an Unsolved Led Zeppelin Mystery, or

respond to one already posted. If you make a claim that solves a mystery be prepared to SUBSTANTIATE IT (news article, photo, credentials, etc).

    3. NO BLACK MAGIC / BACKWARDS MASKING posts. I WILL ignore you.

Enjoy the thread! Here's hoping we can all solve a mystery or two together.

  15. B)

    All,

Thanks for the replies to my posting about that Peter Grant t-shirt. I'm not sure if I got a definite answer to what "In for a quick garden" really means, but it's obviously sexual. I hope someone can chime in and solve this mystery! ;)
