  1. Hi there You listed errors you're hearing in Jimmy's playing. (Not saying I disagree with ya) Are you wishing to hear a clone from the studio album, or are you picking a certain live version of a song and believing he should play it that way for every appearance - and if he doesn't - then it's classified riddled with mistakes? When it comes to live sometimes an imperfection to one pair of ears could be something cool sounding to another pair. I get that there are fundamentals in every song that regardless of what and where some aspects have to be played a certain way or the song just doesn't sound right. A complete f*ck up is different then a slight variation on a solo from one night to another or from tour to tour. How does somebody name the errors off No Quarter live? Hahaha. I ask because with live playing and Zeppelin you're always going to get 'errors' with Jimmy based on what we know about his and L Z's live playing style. No night the same as the other. You could even say the same for Plant's approach to singing the songs. i.e. He changes and adds lyrics at different times: sang oooh higher, ahhhhh lower and baby 7 times, the next night it was vice versa and he added a long pause before the last baby the next time out etc. Would that be classified as errors too because it was not following the studio recipe exactly or a live version somebody deems the best one? Jimmy's guitar versus Plants singing. Dun dun dunnn *dramatic music ensues* I hope ya don't think my post is attacking what you said. LOL, poor Pagey nobody in the band faces the nit picking from fans like he does. Popular guy around here isnt he with members.
  2. Every Zep fan and Jimmy Page fan has their own personal opinion on this subject. Jimmy and sloppy playing post '73? For me I can't lump Jimmy's live playing after '73 into the word "sloppy." Are there some gigs where Jimmy mucks up songs and solos horrifically? Well yeah of course, but I won't and can't say once the '73 USA tour was over that was it folks. Go home the great Jimmy Page guitar playing all over. No way! That's not coming from my lips. 1975-80 has some trainwrecks.. BUT it it also gives me some my favourite Jimmy playing - even the bad rep that '77 seems to carry, there are songs/solos from the '77 tour that I really enjoy. As for song Hot Dog? Haha yeah that's not on my listen to LZ list, so I can't comment on that one.
  3. "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" Sending Happy Birthday wishes to my favourite guitarist Mr. Jimmy Page, on this January 9th day!! 72 years young and still rockin' !!
  4. Oh wow STP was so popular when I was in high school. I think everybody my senior year had Purple. No word on cause of death other than cardiac arrest, but it's well known he battled addiction for a long time. Very sad.
  5. Having a clueless moment here. On one of the previous pages, there is an interview that mentions Plant calling Jimmy a punter at one time when he went to see the Firm I believe. Maybe I am losing something with British to American meaning with that word. All I keep trying to do is connect Jimmy Page with a position on a NFL roster and I draw a blank. Can anyone explain what he meant. Online dictionary I didn't find helpful in this case.
  6. I can't speak for others as to why they scrutinize Jimmy's playing during the drug era more than any other guitarist. I'll make a little comparison to sports figures. I see Jimmy kind of like a Michael Jordan or Payton Manning. When each is having an off night, its magnitude is that much more noticeable. Apples to oranges yes, but still its people who are viewed as elite as you can get in their roles. The Crème de la crème! Clapton is a top notch guitar player, but Jimmy and Zeppelin I see over the years has reached more ears and easier for people to judge perhaps.
  7. Jimmy and Jonesy?! That pair could be verrry interesting. Similar in some regards, but also worlds apart. That can make for a great partnership. I would say call Jason up - however once Jason is involved you have the notion of getting on the horn with Robert. Robert would decline, so that opens the door to auditioning singers who have similar voice qualities to Robert. Of course in Jimmy and Jonesy eyes that person doesn't excist. The project is then deserted. Deja vu ?? Well..why can't the 3 of them try something again - only this time don't set out to audition Robert Plant #2. Why not take a totally different approach all together? I suppose that isn't feasible when you have a group consisting of two Zeppelin members plus Bonzo Jr. Fans automatically set out wanting Robert up front or at the very least somebody who resembles his singing style. I however would not care if they had Pee-Wee Herman singing if it meant Jimmy Page would be creating music and sharing it with us. Ack! That brilliant musical mind should still be heard. I think he still has some cool ideas. I guess when all is said and done even if Jonesy and Jimmy partnered up, Jimmy isn't in playing mode. Jonesy at least is actively playing in public. One thing I will say Jason on drums is great, him out of the equation gets rid of the Zeppelin-esque vibe. Something I think probably would make Jimmy more nervous about living up to his legendary Zeppelin status. He doesn't need that kind of pressure. Nice just to talk about what ifs....
  8. Can't say I disagree with any of your thoughts. I often wonder with Jimmy's old "habits" if bridges were burned? I know he's became clean and that's key, but sometimes relationships be it professional or whatever can't be repaired. But I agree with Jimmy being a team player. When he was re-mastering the re-mastered re-masters haha he mentioned checking with Jones and Plant in regards to the material that would go into the finished product. He easily could've just said to hell what you want. Now John Paul Jones - he's one I don't know much about on his professional working relationships with other musicians outside of Zeppelin.
  9. D D, hmm this comes back to confidence in my head. Pushing the envelope and having that I D G A F attitude, is much more easier to play off when you're drunk, high and young--er. Back in the 70's mistakes or screw-ups by the band could be forgiven by pot smoking, bell bottom wearing teenagers. Take Jimmy in 1977. If he hit the O2 stage like that in '07 it would be a complete write off. But you know the things that often got Jimmy in trouble live, are the things I have came to enjoy about him so much when I listen back. Improvisation, re-inventing his own solos EVERY night, not trying to replicate the studio notes. Sure sometimes it sounds like a ferral cat in heat, but I love cats. You know if Jimmy is concerned that he would have to stand on a stage now in his 70's and play it safe.. Well that's ok! Ride with both hands on the bicycle. I already know Jimmy can do the whole "Look Ma No Hands" when it comes to playing live. I would be thrilled just to hear him and see him with a guitar in his hand again. Heh meanwhile Jimmy's thinking not my style to play it safe when the house lights go down......
  10. That's another thing that's frustrating - at least I think it would be. How many ideas are being kept from coming to life because Jimmy can't find someone to collaborate with, or like you said D D execute it properly? The lack of new material can't be because the well has gone dry. I bet the artistic mind in Page can envision some real musical gems. The unknown is keeping him from laying it down and being heard. I will say one thing I scratch my head at unrelated to the things being brought up in this thread. Plant has no plans on reuniting for a L Z reunion. Ok fine Percy I'll accept that. I'll take my ball and go home. But Robert has L Z songs listed as part of his set lists. Songs that HELLOOOO Jimmy could play as a surprise guest guitarist. Can you imagine Plant doing a concert and announcing to the audience Jimmy Page is going lend a hand with this one. Out walks Page and he goes into a one of his famous Jimmy Page riffs from a well known Zeppelin song. Ack, it's puzzling!! I know Robert said he didn't want to be a juke box like the Stones playing the ol' hits -- and that excuse works for me IF L Z songs were NOT part of his set list. But arghhhh Robert that's not the case. Oh my haha this thread is all over the place. It has a mind of it's own.
  11. I think a lot of people in this thread are making some strong solid points -- and to be honest I wish I disagreed with more of you. We're talking about how Jimmy Page's dependencies have had a negative impact on his confidence in later years. Sigh.... I know the era of Jimmy live on a stage and/or releasing a new solo album is bleak. Why do we suppose Jimmy says he's wants to be seen performing again live, or making a solo album? He said this all summer promoting the Led Zeppelin re-masters -- yet nothing comes to fruition. I don't believe it's to keep people interested in him career wise. I'm a fan of his and like hearing what he's up to whether about his music, or the theatre project for addicts. Jimmy's got me locked up as a fan whether he performs or not. When it comes to Jimmy playing and writing; I think "wanting to" and "able to" are indeed two different things. I believe Jimmy wants to stand on a stage and play guitar, but something is preventing him. Something he may not want to say to the public. Something he perhaps hasn't come to terms with yet. I don't believe Jimmy Page in his heart wants to hang up his guitar. His head though could be conflicting that. For some, the addictions long after they've been defeated still haunt the person psychologically.
  12. ^^ The one doozy problem with being able to play while high and drunk is, it's still a wreaking ball on your body. And when the music stops your health still pays the price. But O m g YES! The O2 gig. See Jimmy you CAN do it clean. Stand on the stage without your safety net! Maybe it would be actual touring that could make those old habits attractive again. I don't know. I'm just taking wild guesses Damn you Jimmy Page for being so fascinating.
  13. For me the one marked difference between Jimmy and a lot of his musical peers who also suffered from addiction is many of them have done a tour sober. That first time you get up on that stage with a clear head is likely scary. You're basically naked in front of that crowd. If you make mistakes and screw up you don't get to blame the drugs this time. You probably wanna play it extra safe and avoid getting too complicated in solos perhaps. And if you suffer from bad nerves like Jimmy you're likely even more gun shy about playing a gig straight. Yes the A R M S concert brought Jimmy out of hiding, he kicked his heroin habit, but it also kept the window of him still doing his touring drunk and high. And it stayed that way for the rest of his public playing career (thus far) Bottom line for me is. In 2015 I really really wish Jimmy could face his fears and stand on a stage after a cup of tea and play music. So many of the guys he grew up with have done that. I think it would be a weight off his shoulders if he could too.He doesn't have to be fancy or ground breaking. Just do what he loves to do. Play guitar, but do it clean this time. I don't suffer from addiction nor am I professional musician so my thoughts can easily be tossed out too.
  14. So true, I draw a blank right now, but who was it that Jimmy said touring with this guy was like being on tour with your Grandma? Meanwhile I'm thinking um Jimmy that lifestyle on the road is EXACTLY what you should've adopted. Ok maybe not knitting needles, crossword puzzles and Wheel of Fortune, but Jimmy should've learned to perform again without the drugs and Jack Daniels once he got post Zeppelin He is such an incredibly talented musician. So many ideas that never got a chance to come to fruition I bet. And now like many have said, his confidence likely plays the villain now.
  15. ^^ You know that does sound likely the reason. As a big fan of Jimmy, it bums me out to think his drug issues to this day nobody knows how much it may have hindered projects with other musicians. I remember watching the footage of Jimmy at the A R M S in '83 and the S T H solo just left me thinking "Oh no Jimmy " Jeff and Eric basically rescuing him on HIS song. A song he had played hundreds of times. I'm glad Jimmy is clean today. I just wish we had more 'sober' Jimmy post O2 reunion to watch.
  16. Sorry Elvis, you don't do that guitar justice. Haha I saw that pic of Robert a while ago and I just realized now he was parked in front of Glad and Hefty trash bags pondering what brand to buy.
  17. I admit '77 gigs weren't always the ones I'd search out. Which is odd for me because Physical Graffiti and Presence contain some my favourite tunes - with that being said I realized I was missing out on some of my beloved LZ songs being performed. Does '77 have cringe worthy moments? Hell yes of course, but I roll with it. I have a new appreciation for '77 when I go back and listen. I will say I get to the Oakland gig and it's always kind of bitter sweet knowing that when the show is over...It's over for those in North America...... Ah happy thoughts though. There are endless ways to keep hearing this timeless music. Nod to Jimmy and the fans for keeping LZ so much alive I really don't have a specific '77 performance I deem my number one. I take a bit from many of them and enjoy..Haha and no I don't mean splicing and editing one song from several nights..
  18. I have to chuckle a bit when out of every topic and thread on this entire Led Zeppelin Forum It appears this thread Hot Pics of Jimmy has the most views. Over a million views. The power of Jimmy Page lol
  19. Oh I'll admit the sound quality of Tempe does it NO favours, but there are parts in the middle where Bonham's playing somewhere else and well Jimmy is heck I don't know? On planet Pluto : If I was introducing A L S to somebody for the first time Tempe definitely would not be it. Actually I would let them hear the studio version first so they could hear all the brilliant layered guitar work of Jimmy - then I'd say have at it with the various live versions!
  20. Hahaha oh my oh my. I played this Tempe version and I must say my cat looked at me like I had 3 heads.
  21. The only little part I cringe at are his interviews on how ITTOD came to be, and the whole Jonesy and the 80's Stevie Wonder keyboard scripted sounding answer. LOL I end up saying under my breath: *sigh* Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy I wish to hear a (dare I say) more truth telling answer on why JPJ was moved to the forefront and why you REALLY took somewhat of a backseat in the creative process of this album - It was night and day compared to their other ones. But then again that would be me fishing for some info on his private life and he doesn't owe me that. Bottom line I'll read/listen to what Jimmy Page has to say about the making of Led Zeppelin's music whether it was written with him in a suit and tie sober as a church mouse, or he was buck naked with women climbing on top of him, while wearing only a pointed wizard's hat and high on smack. I'm going to keep on listening to the music regardless.
  22. When was the last time Plant actually hit the proper high notes for Over the Hills and Far Away? i.e. "Many times.." It has to be some time in 1972, but does anybody know the actual concert? Because by the time they get to 1973 he adapts to an alternate lower version. And that's pretty much how it stays for the rest of Zeppelin when it comes to that song. Still remained a song I enjoyed though. Just curious..
  23. All 556 pages done! I have been camped out in this thread over my morning coffee this past week It has most indeed been a pleasure scrolling through this pictorial journey of Jimmy Page. There are so many lovely pictures. I can't pick a favorite, but there are definitely a number I can stare at. Thank you to everybody who spent time gathering.
