  1. Alright, I checked the place and there's no jazz thread. I wonder why?

Well, I've gotten into jazz over the past three months and it's amazing me more and more. I've gotten into a lot of the good oldies like Miles Davis, Theolonius Monk, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus and a few others I can't think of right now.

My first jazz album was Kind of Blue (go figure) but it didn't click for me at first, but I listened to Miles' jazz fusion stuff first (In A Silent Way and Jack Johnson) and it was great, but then I decided to give the older jazz a try again and now I love it to death.

I really really really love the hard bop jazz albums, but I also enjoy jazz albums like Porgy and Bess by Miles.

    Ok, cool cats, discuss.

may i suggest an album: mingus ah um, by charles mingus...you maybe able to listen to it without purchasing on spotilfy.

  2. who gives a shit ??

its a good song, infact the older i get, the more i'm convinced it's one the the best pieces of a guitar/bass/drum set up by anyone. if any other band had written a song half as good as this, including queen, they would of made a mess of their pants.

this song shows zep really spreading their wings i9n the latter half of their career, this piece is as deep as a chopin nocturne or a bach fugue.

  3. There are better songs than both The Rain Song or ALS...Stairway is still epic[not the greatest, but epic], ALS kinda does get predictive after the first solo, and Kashmir is a statement that made Physical Graffiti, and where did this "ode to forever" bullshit come from?

for me, ALS used to be a good song, in the last few years, imho, now i realise, (with the aid of a good quality playback system), the song in a masterpiece.

the song, being so long, always grips me, and i dont find it indulgent, the phaser guitar parts always seem to climb, the solo (im my opinion) is possibly the best electric guitar solo of all time, the six verses are always rivetting, the added guitar refrains jsut add to it, the

"mightly arms of atlas...hold the heaven from the earth" refrain, which occurs twice, is slightly different the 2nd time round, the second time there is yet another phaser guitar effect which adds to the constant yearning and relentless climbing i find in the song. i've realised that there are many many parts to this song, should you not be to fond of the song, may i suggest you play the song on a good stereo system or a good set of headphones, very loudly...

the song is massive, add the various odd time signatures, the vari speed, the production and you have zeppelin at their most untouchable.

bands have had multi platinum careers by picking off this carcass that is ALS

  4. How's it going "barrios?" I wouldn't say cynical as much as it may look but I would base a lot of my answers on not just BEACH BOYS biographies, but on my personal conversations with Brian. I am proud and feel priviledged that I know the great man himself, wouldn't you? ROCK ON!

    ...you actually know him ?

good for you it thats the case.

  5. How's it going fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics? I would like to discuss a band that needs no introduction. THE BEACH BOYS have gone down in Rock n' Roll history as the GREATEST harmonizing band of all-time. For a brief moment, it seemed that THE BEACH BOYS leader Brian Wilson was and still is, a genius and could do no wrong. When his masterpiece PET SOUNDS album was released in 1966, that album would singlehandedly set the stage for THE BEATLES to release their greatest masterpieces which is the REVOLVER (1966) and later, the SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1967) albums. After PET SOUNDS, Wilson would release another one of his greatest achievements, the 1966 45 RPM single GOOD VIBRATIONS which would become the band's first worldwide number one hit. But what many Rock fans did not know was what was Wilson doing in the studio after the release of GOOD VIBRATIONS in 1966. Wilson would be in the studio recording mind blowing music with lyrics provided by his co-writer and collaborator Van Dyke Parks in what Wilson would describe his next album as "a teenage symphony to God." This album would no doubt be called "THE GREATEST UNRELEASED ALBUM IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY." The album was originally called DUMB ANGEL after Wilson's younger brother Dennis (Denny) Wilson but the album would be changed simply to SMiLE. If SMiLE would have been released originally in December 1966 as planned or even January 1967, SMiLE would have been a masterpiece way ahead of its time that would have joined SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND as one of the biggest influencial albums of all-time. However, when Wilson cancelled SMiLE in May 1967, Rock n' Roll was dealt another major blow and Brian Douglas Wilson as well as THE BEACH BOYS would never recover from the loss.

For myself, I truly consider myself a BEACH BOYS authority since I personally know Brian Wilson as well as the rest of THE BEACH BOYS but mainly one of my dearest friends that I ever knew, the late great Dennis (Denny) Wilson. I have spoken with Brian on several occasions through the years and we have discussed SMiLE to a big extent. I have also spoken with Van Dyke Parks on many occasions and have gotten his opinions and views on SMiLE. I am very proud of Brian for controlling the illness that has eluded him from further greatness and blossomed into a live performer once again bringing him back to life. I, personally, never thought that Brian would ever be a live performer again. Then again, I never thought that Brian would have lived this long. One of Rock n' Roll's biggest miracles and greatest comebacks is that Brian found the courage to go back in time to finish the famous unreleased SMiLE album with his former collaborator Van Dyke Parks and finally release the album in 2004 as a solo artist effort and not with THE BEACH BOYS. Brian managed to win a Grammy Award for SMiLE for one of the most famous songs ever recorded. The song is called "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow," but you may remember the song better as simply "Fire." I own many bootleg CD's on the original SMiLE sessions from 1966-67 and I would like to say that they were nothing short of incredible back then just like they are incredible now.

Which now brings us to 2008, Brian Wilson still continues to amaze the Rock n' Roll world with his presence and Capitol Records has recently opened their doors to welcome Brian back home with open arms where he so rightly deserves to be. Now that Wilson is back with Capitol Records, there has been talks that there will be a SMiLE Sessions boxset in the near future. And when that happens, we, the music fans will be able to hear and judge for ourselves if the SMiLE legend and hype was really legitimate. Now I ask all of you, my fellow ZEPPELIN fanatics, your views and opinions on this great band as well as their leader Brian Wilson and I would like to hear what all of you have to say about the unreleased SMiLE album. Please enlighten me whether you have a positive or negative post. ROCK ON!

the greatest single force in rock and roll = brian wilson. to think of his output from early '62 to the end of '66, 10 studio albums in that time, he was the songwriter, producer, arranger, player, singer.

form 67 to 71 still made some insanely good music (regardless of smile) holland has 7 brian wilson songs on it, a great album, until i die on surfs up is so jazzy and incredible. time to get alone on friends is years ahead of it's time. pet sounds in stereo is a must, the guitar arrangements in sloop john b are crystal clear in the stereo version.

genius is a word that we all bound about to often in this day and age, however b wilson ranks alongside j s bach.

    i fucking adore his music

    i'm a huge fan.

the proof is in the pudding, led zep have sold 300 million records worldwide, 115 million in the usa. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realise that the remaining records have been sold in the major popular music markets (belive it or not, that inevitably includes europe and south america, japan australia etc)..........that's approx 180 million records...end of thread....good night....pointless discussion....

it's cool to knock led zeppelin....last yr 20 million people scambled to get tickets for their gig, in 1979, when they were considered out of fashion in a country "they were not that popular in" 400,000 people saw them in play 2 outdoor gigs,

i'm off to play my les paul...

  7. Zeppelin were never "mega" in the UK. I know, I was there. The most popular bands at that time were Pink Floyd, T Rex and ABBA who outsold Led Zeppelin big time in England. By 1976 Zeppelin were considered "old farts", the last of their fans congregating for the Knebworth shows. The musical climate had changed so much they never played one concert in the UK for the 1980 Tour, straight to Europe with their collective tail between their legs.

In the 80's they were all but forgotten, considered "old fashioned" and "bloated dinosaurs." It's only since the late nineties that they have been re-evaluated and found worthy by the almighty music critics and media.

trex ? pink floyd were not that big until dark side, how can they of been considered old farts by 1976 ? they were in their late 20's, except for page who was in his early 30's, they didn't play one show in the uk perhps because they did not want to...................disagree with this post.

  8. USA and Canada: massive. I dont think a rock group can get any bigger(with the exception of the Beatles)

UK. Popular but not of the stature as in North America and nowhere near as popular as in North America. Oaisis and Queen are much bigger in UK among other groups

Contintental Europe;respectable following but not as big as say Queen or Pink Floyd. They dont receive saturation radio play there in key markets like France,Germany,Italy like they do in North America

Latin America; popular for english rock group but not as popular as say Queen and nothing compared to domestic acts

Japan;popular for english rock group but nothing in comparison to domestic acts.

........disgagree, zep as stated were mega in usa and canda, so to in th uk, in terms of albums sales the same as queen, just that queens' best of albums have been amongst the best selling albums of all time time here in the uk. there are many queen original albums that struggled to get into the top 5 album chart here, while all zeppelin albums hit the no#1 spot, except for the first lp.

I think you'd be suprised if you found out how many albums zep sold in continental europe...come on, you talking about a band that sold a lot of records, they sold as many albums in their 12 years together, as queen did in almost 20 years of existance with mercury, so inevitably they would of been just as popular as any other 70's band in europe, asia, etc.
