has anyone had the chance to listen to the new Tarantura box set for this show? Any better then the transfer mentioned here? Does anyone have the link by the way? Or is it the same as the one found on Dime?

There was a delay in shipping them out and most are on the way starting yesterday and today. We will know soon . . .

    Hi there.

I am wondering and asking which do you think is the best Kashmir live version.

Official we just have Knebworth's and O2's. And I think Kashmir and For Your Life were the best moments of the whole Celebration Day night.

    Cheers.

    TT.

My two favorites for Kashmir are from 1975: Long Beach 11th--first night--a night most people "poo poo" due to a few songs flubs . . .  and Feb 14 . . . I think that due to Plant's voice being tops and Bonham's tight drum pacing followed by the snare to cymbal explosions after each break. The 14th is in my opinion one of the best nights of '75, and I am not a big fan of most 1975 concerts overall.

It won’t happen. The taper has sold the tapes to a private collector, so unless they’re connected to Japan…

Well it appears that is not the case, as Empress Valley announced an "almost" complete Vancouver 1971 show coming out soon w/ pic of the box set . . . must be connected to Japan! Great news

I can't recall that particular phrase "heavy metal crashing to the ground" but I'll look through my review archive and see what I can find. There was a review of Jimi Hendrix that described his music as "heavy metal falling from the sky". Maybe that is what you are remembering?

As for the term "heavy metal", it came from the 1961 William Burroughs novel "The Soft Machine". Steppenwolf then used the phrase "heavy metal thunder" in its 1968 song "Born To Be Wild".

The first writer to use 'heavy metal' in reference to bands and a style of music is Metal Mike Saunders in a 1970 Rolling Stone review of Humble Pie. He then used the term again in a 1971 Creem review. I'll track down the exact articles and dates when I get home.

Thank you, maybe that was who that was associated with and not Zeppelin. I have been reading about those people and bands/songs you mentioned over the last few days in connection to that phrase which is interesting as well, but nothing about a music critic's concert review connected to falling metal which is funny in it's own right. Looking forward to what you find out and where from. Thanks

  5. I am Zeppelin fan, especially of their live material and have been collecting since the early '90s when I first stumbled across a bootleg in a record/head shop in Minneapolis. I am a teacher that has kids do an in-depth research project each year on the topic of their choice. This year I have a couple boys who are researching Elvis' influence on British bands. I rattled off a story that was in the back of my mind and for the life of me cannot find anywhere on the net or in my few books, "Led Zeppelin Live" by Luis Rey . . . I could have sworn I read a blurb about some music critic (from Seattle I want to say) that wrote a blistering description after seeing them live and stated something to the effect, "their music sounded like heavy metal crashing to the ground." Is there anyone out there that has come across this, or did I garble this up from multiple stories and time periods? There are multiple people/stories about the first coining of the phrase 'Heavy metal' but have had no luck chasing this one down

My students wanted to use that quote in their project but now I cannot back it up via research.

    Thanks in advance

“Guitarist Page box” 53 / 100 just arrived and it looks stunning.
Hopefully “Commodore Page” doesn’t take to o long…

Congrats, mine shipped just 2 days ago from the land of the rising sun and it's already in the states and in the nearby town, just missed today's delivery and will get it Monday now. I'd love to know how the last half of Rock Carnival sounds, especially WLLove medley! No worries either way but hoping for a nice sound improvement on that one.

I've come to look at this tour as being really overrated. The band never really gels. Jimmy's playing at 30% compared to the level he was playing at the us tour. No wonder the audience looks tame in that footage from Sydney.

It's not my favorite tour as a whole, but some of the heaviest concerts they played where done there. I love Adelaide 19th and the 2nd to last show in Sydney, great stuff and just hard driving ferocious playing, even Plant's voice was top-notch for many of those shows.

For the Japanese market Tarantura is probably releasing some "Special Promo Edition Box - sets", limited to a mere 10 or 20 sets each (Commodore and Guitarist set). And yes these set are very expensive: $ 1.100,-

The standard box -sets are limited to 100 sets each and are a bit less expensive: just like Tainted Cheese said $ 470,- which is (give and take) $ 27,- / cd!

I bet you paid more for some cd's in your collection. I know I have and for this exquisite set I'm happily paying a bit more.

Oh yes, I have paid some hefty price points over the years, but have learned the hard way what's worth the big bucks and what's not. Most of those I have luckily sold to break even. I am definitely involved in a mild obsession that I have sort of tamed. But this Japan box is one I can't quite pass up for many reasons. Thanks for breaking it down to cd price, sounds cheap when you explain it like that!?!

I look at it like this, whilst there's collectors willing to fork out a $1,000 for a set then it's probably still worth groups like Tarantura's time to release these sets even knowing that they'll be all over the net in just a few days. So a big thank you to those with big wallets. Much appreciated.

Here's the other 180 degree view . . . It was about 470$ , not quite a 1,000, but your welcome . . . anything else you might be needing?

    Sounds great

I have prayed (and I'm a no show catholic for the last 35 years) for this show (or the next night) in better sound quality since first hearing it many moons ago. . . could this be an answer? Cryptic info explained on this thread, is there more or should I go to church this Sunday for the first time in decades?

I thought Enigma (whoever he might be) was doing a very nice job on remastering a show ever since "Bath of the Blues" December 2019.

Or are there any better versions of the shows he/she/it has done? If so, I'd like to know.

I think Enigma did great on the Bloomington soundboard/audience mix and the '69 Winterland shows too.The Rock Carnival 23rd show was superb sounding except when it got to the last few songs especially Whole Lotta Love medley where it fluctuates and the sound dims down and is somewhat muffled as opposed to being over processing/-ed, but I could be wrong. That's what I am hoping for after reading the liner notes shown in the images of the 23rd set on the first page of this thread, it reads to me like the tape is different or keeps the same sound quality throughout instead of the drop off near the last hour of the show. Getting that medley in great sound quality will be HUGE it that's what it turns out to be . . . Here's hoping!

  12. Don't know much about bitches other then I don't want my female dog to be one (I think she's fixed) . . . ON ANOTHER note . . . I sure hope either one (Odense & Japan '71) of these release come out soon, DAMN those Japanese labels are good at teasing us for months especially in the case of the Japan box, as they spilled the beans back around Christmas time and here we are 7 months later being teased with images for the last 2 months.

  13. Very tantalizing information about shows above from "Freak's" post, although I am a little confused on the back-story, my apologies for not fully understanding the dialogue. What do you mean by "hotel" and "first-league"--owners of this rare unleaded shows? Are you saying these shows would have been released/shared already but that due to others expecting them for free? I don't want to stir the pot or anything like that just curious what this is stemming from . . . Thanks for the clarification.

Today I was reading a dutch site on which a guy stated "...Bonzo or John Heineken, which were nicknames, sadly died in 1980...".

As for now I've been a huge Led Zeppelin - and especially John Bonham - fan for over 45 years, but I've never ever heard Bonham being called John Heineken. I know he liked the beer but giving him this nickname? Never heard of. Anybody?

    ". . . The man who only drinks Hieneken . . . " Plant quote intro to Moby D June 21st 1977.

No, I'm sorry, I haven't read or heard anything about improvements for the other dates. On the other hand all the shows will be mastered by "Enigma" (whoever he'll be?) and he's doing a great job on Tarantura releases ever since "Bath of the Blues".

I agree, Enigma has done a great job on Bath and especially the Bloomington show, which is where I grew up in Minnesota! This release and Denmark has fired me up for a new show in great quality and finally the 23rd Whole Lotta Love medley alone should be groundbreaking.

Good answer, bit angry but good answer. I never feel "wiser" for getting them for free. But I do feel "dumber" for all the crap I bought  at $150 a pop at Rock on Stocke on Crescent street in Montreal. But back then you could not preview what you are buying, today I guess you can with all the shows available online. I respect anyone whatever they do as long as they are kind and not hurting anyone.

I spent thousands of $$$$$ on shows that were almost unlistenable. THAT makes me angry. But damn that bootleg store was a cool one, until the Quebec government stepped in and shut it down. I don't know what was dirtier, the store or the people who worked there 😜

No anger, been stuck inside for the last few days with sick kids, so maybe I had a temporary chip on my shoulder. I've gone through that phase too, had a fortune in cd boots, until I finally sold most of them and bought a snowmobile and new trailer instead. But now only get ones mentioned above. I am excited for the news of these recent release though, especially the 23rd and a great sounding Whole Lotta love medley!

7-29 is the best of the 3, start to finish, absolutely. If a full version of the 27th ever surfaces, that could change my opinion. But the run of RR through SIBLY is the most fun from this night to my ears. @Strider is bang on about CD. It's killer here and maybe best version of the year. Additionally, SRTS from the 29th is one of the best I've ever heard. I love the version from the soundtrack, but the one from the 29th is just smokin! It helps that the version of the boot available has Bonzo and Jonesy way up in the mix. The are killin it!  NQ from this night is fantastic and gives the classic soundtrack version a run for it's money imho. Same with STH. And of course we have a really great performance of TY.

I agree the MSG Dazed is one of the best ever as well as Song Remains the Same, that song is one I always go check out to see if the band is ON! If they play that song in unison--tightly, or "on fire" (usually Bonham dictates that in my opinion) it usually means the rest of the concert falls in line! But the La Forum June 3rd concert is for me the best concert of the US tour 1973 bar-none! It's so damn heavy and tight nothing else comes close . . . too bad it has such bad fluctuations throughout, it's such a tease to listen to it knowing it's soooo good!

I'll be buying Odense for sure and probably also the upcoming '71 box-set.

I've always wanted "The Campaign" box-set so badly, but on the rare occasion it is for sale on https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp is easily goes for $ 1,800.- and I think that's just a bit too much!

I was hoping they would release the 23rd as a separate release from the box set since it sounds like it will be a huge upgrade--especially the medley which is freaking amazing, as I (and many others too I would assume who keep up on these releases) already have the soundboards released for the 28th and 29th as well as the big upgrade to the 27th Hiroshima that came out in 2011/12 thereabouts. The 24th is a hard listen in my opinion other than the acoustic numbers, so I would be buying what I already have for all other shows besides the 23rd. Hopefully there will be more big news on improvements for the other Japan shows, but not getting my hopes up.

Who still buys bootlegs? Honestly asking. You know that 5 minutes after anything is released it is up on all our fave bootleg websites. My days of spending $150 for shitty sounding box sets are long over.

All my 2 cents. If you do still buy them I would love to know why? A collector's thing? I have respect for whatever y'all do as long as you are not hurting anyone.

Except liking Greta Van Douchebags. That I will not tolerate! 😳  Hey I am not a saint 😇

I buy them depending on sound quality and new discovered sound sources, or out of the ordinary releases. Same reason I buy records more or less, I could get the songs/albums on my computer for free but that's dull and boring compared to getting something tangible like album/cd art along with liner notes. If I find myself not needing them I can easily sell them for the same cost I paid. People who fail to understand that part of it can get them for free and feel wiser than the rest of us, but those like me who like to collect don't care what others' think. I know you asked respectfully and I appreciate it, but I have read numerous snarky posts over the years from others saying those who spend their money on boots are foolish since they acquired them for free. Different strokes for  . . . folks! I'll be buying the new '71 Denmark show for DAMN sure if the sounds lives up to the rumors mentioned above!
