CONGRATULATIONS LIVERPOOL!!! Very well done! :drinks:

Agreed! Well done, Liverpool! Their sixth Champions League title!

I’m glad they got that second goal - it would have been a shame had that quick penalty early on been the only goal of the day.

The better team won. Well done to the Reds!

Id pick Arsenal to avenge the loss

    Ummm...Arsenal already lost on Wednesday.

Liverpool and Tottenham are playing today.

I was saying it was quite a coup for all four teams playing in the two European finals were from England.

I like Leicester City and Tottenham the most.  But I agree Liverpool and Manchester City are the best teams now.  Tottenham could beat them. But if I were betting on it, Id say Liverpool in a potential high scoring game.  Aston Villa should be ripe for the picking early on.  I am going to bet against them, that is for sure

Betting against Aston Villa early next season wouldn't be the most unwise thing - newly promoted teams tend to struggle a bit in their first year up. If they get past the first season (a few do actually go right back down the following season), they will usually buy more aggressively and stay up.

Yes - tomorrow's game is quite a good matchup and (along with the Chelsea/Arsenal Europa League Final) quite a coup for the Premier League. I think it's the first all-EPL Champions League final since the Man U/Chelsea match in 2008.

Well you must know who the actor Tom Hanks is?  He just put out a Tweet last night he is cheering big time for Aston Villa.  Have no idea why as he is from the Oakland area.  Sold peanuts at the Raiders games before he made it big

Well, he must be happy in any case - they won promotion to the Premier League by beating Derby County, 2-1. I have to admit that it was strange the past few years not having Aston Villa in the EPL. They are the most supported team in Birmingham, which itself is the 2nd-largest city in England (and possibly the whole UK). Anyway, good for them for finally coming back.

Also, congratulations to Chelsea for winning the Europa League title decisively over Arse(nal), 4-1. Eden Hazard scored twice in a game that may very well be his last with the team. (I hope not because the Premier League is better with having players like Eden in it - however, it seems that playing for Real Madrid was a dream of his since childhood. So, he's probably off.)

Only the Champions League title left to decide this Saturday - will Liverpool or Tottenham win? (Personally, I'm not a fan of either side - having said that, I do think that Liverpool is the better team. However, Tottenham's run in the Champions League has been just as impressive as Liverpool's. I'm just glad that both Kane and Salah will be ready to go - you want the best playing against the best in such a match-up.)

  5. ...and I loved the show at MSG so much that I am now seeing them tomorrow in Philly.

If it is their last tour, I want to see them in the city where I normally see most of my shows. It'll be the first time in 13 years seeing them here. I wonder if playing in a stadium will alter their stage presentation at all.

Damn!!! the Blues Got screwed!!!! Definite hand pass! How do the refs sleep at night after allowing garbage like that to pass?

Yeah, that was a pretty bad non-call.

They need to change the rules at league-level to allow situations such as this to be reviewable. If the refs didn't see it on the ice (they're human - they can't see everything at all times), there's technically nothing to review. However, as I just said, this kind of situation has to be allowed to be reviewable at league-level, especially during the playoffs.

But, yes, the irony of the line you quoted is funny.

That was one of the funnier events of the evening! 😆

To be blunt, Roger was in really great voice all night. On “Love Reign O’er Me”, when he sings the title again right after the instrumental break and before the finale of the song, he hit the note on “Love...” - it was very impressive! 😎

    BUT, be consoled!

We all have three more games to watch, and all six teams left are EPL teams!

So, we still have just about two more weeks of football before withdrawal symptoms set in.

(And then the Women's World Cup will take over...)

Oh no - is the FA Cup final not on the BBC anymore? It still was on the Beeb before I moved back to the States (2016).

If that’s true, that is very sad. Come to think of it, both the Europa League final and Champions League final were on one of the ITV channels when I was still there - is that no longer true either?

That’s awful - you would think the national sport would be on channels that people didn’t have to pay for.

Very very very well done Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea
And Pep Guardiola will shed a tear or two in Manchester :D

Well, if you ignore the fact that Man City are still on-target for, and will most probably get, a domestic quadruple (Community Shield, League Cup, EPL title, and FA Cup all during the same season - if memory serves, I think this is also unprecedented, at least in recent years) - so, I don’t think he’ll be crying too much. 😉

Thank you for the list above too; my original comment was specifically in reference to the EPL. I had suspected (and in fact knew, from the more recent years) that it had happened with other leagues. Still, a great accomplishment.

  12. Wow...the English Premier League, Kings Of Europe!

Not only are both Champions League finalists Premier League teams, both Europa League finalists are as well! (Trivial fact as a result - the UEFA Super Cup game in August will also be an all-Premier League affair; a fact, if I remember correctly, that is unprecedented.)

Well done to Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea!

  13. My goodness, this weekend was quite eventful, even more entertaining than I thought it would be (although mostly by the ways that were underwhelming rather than outstanding).

The quality performances first: great gutsy win by Liverpool away at Newcastle. It certainly looked like the Magpies were keen to get a point out of this match (esp. after Salah went out hurt - what is the news on him, btw?), but the Reds were plucky enough to claim the victory, 3-2. Chelsea took proper stock of the top-4 situation and dispatched Watford as they should have at Stamford Bridge, 3-0.

Then the not-so-quality performances: how the hell do Tottenham become unglued enough to have TWO men sent off (for most of the whole second half as well) in a game that was so meaningful to them? Playing Bournemouth should have provided an easy 3 points to the Lillywhites, but they couldn't even manage 1. Dreadful. Man U continued their head-scratching run of form and could only manage a 1-1 draw against the already-relegated, cellar-dwelling Huddersfield. This result, combined with the other results of the day, guaranteed that they won't be playing Champions League next year. However, Arsenal take the cake. They somehow could only manage a 1-1 draw, at home, against Brighton who are a mere single spot above the relegation zone. This result, combined with Chelsea's victory, clinched a top-4 finish for the Blues - it's like Christmas in May! I know Mourinho was referring to Wenger when he said "specialist in failure", but I wonder if that aura is still at Arsenal sometimes. Their draw today also made it virtually mathematically impossible for them to get into the top 4 themselves, so they virtually guaranteed that their arch-rival Tottenham will finish in the top 4 at their expense! (No St. Totteringham's Day this year apparently.) It's not often that one can say that a draw is worse than a loss, but Arsenal may have just managed it! Tottenham opened the door for them on Friday, but Arsenal refused to walk through on Sunday. Too funny...

Man City will probably go top of the table again tomorrow (Monday). It's been very entertaining watching Man City and Liverpool slug it out all year. This weekend should be fun to watch - all the drama is at the top!

  16. Rest in peace to the 49 people senselessly murdered in Christchurch, New Zealand.

If a person has to resort to randomly killing people to advance his alleged "philosophy" (and broadcasting the whole thing live on the Internet to boot), his philosophy simply sucks by definition, full stop.

Damn. I was just getting over the loss of Julie Adams (she was a spirited presence in my circle of friends/work and although you could see that in recent years she was slipping, I'll miss her greatly) and now the passing of one of my favourite foreign actors.

"Wings of Desire" is one of those films that permanently etched itself into my memory and my soul on first viewing. It is a mainstay in my personal all-time top 10...along with "The Godfather" and "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly". Bruno Ganz is exactly what you think or want an angel to be. It puts the American remake to shame.

Rest in peace Julie and Bruno.

10 Bruno Ganz movies I plan on rewatching this week.

    1. Wings of Desire 1987

    2. The American Friend 1977

    3. Downfall 2004

    4. Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht 1979

    5. The Reader 2008

    6. Baader-Meinhof Complex 2008

    7. Bread & Tulips 2000

    8. Eternity & a Day 1998

    9. Julia's Disappearance 2009

    10. Last Days of Chez Nous 1992

Very well said about Wings Of Desire - it is an absolutely sublime film. Completely agreed as well about the lowest-common-denominator, dumbed-down Hollywood remake of it: City Of Angels. (The remake is fine, if you like derivative love stories with one protagonist who happens to be an angel - otherwise, it's pretty much like every other love story made into a film.)

Thank you for your list - I had forgotten he was in the Nosferatu film. The American Friend deserves to be much better known too. He'll be remembered for Downfall forever, but I hope he will be remembered more for the Wim Wenders films he appeared in. R.I.P., Bruno.

The fact that "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "A Star is Born" got nominated for Best Picture and "First Man" didn't is pretty lame. My friends and I are already planning on booing loudly every mention of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "A Star is Born" at the Oscar party.

I share the disappointment of many that "Bohemian Rhapsody" got a nomination - it doesn't deserve one, period. Outside of the Live Aid scene, it was pretty meh. (I'll admit that the scene with Mike Myers was pretty funny as well.) "First Man" didn't get enough acclaim this year for whatever reason. A straight-up trade of "First Man" for "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the nominees list would be perfect.

I have to disagree on "A Star Is Born", though. That film was excellent. You may not think it deserves to win Best Film, but it was always going to be nominated. I don't know what film will end up winning - a wide-open year, I think.

That away goal rule needs scrapping asap, it's completely unfair, extra time should go too. Games should go straight to penalty kicks if there is stalemate after ninety mins. At least that really unfair golden goal rule was scrapped after a few years.

Oh, now that's interesting - you have echoed what I sensed on my own when I lived over there, i.e., we each have different concepts of what is "fair" in deciding a game/match if it goes longer than regulation time.

For football/soccer, most of the world outside of North America prefers penalties to settle a draw at the end of regulation; we here prefer a team sport to be decided in a team fashion (thus, we prefer extra time ("overtime" on our parlance) and golden goal ("sudden death" for us)). I'll give you a specific example in a different sport. In ice hockey here, in the regular season, we have shootouts if neither team scores in overtime if a game is tied at the end of regulation; however, in the Stanley Cup playoffs after the regular season, where the overall champion in any given season is determined, they play overtime until one team scores a goal in actual game conditions. If that means there are 3 or 4 or 5 overtime sessions, then that's how many there will be. Of course, this is known in advance, and teams are ready for it. It also makes for great viewing - the game could both end at any time and last for an unknown amount of time. Tension each and every moment as long as the game lasts with full teams actually playing against one another the entire time.

Now, of course, MLS adopts the shootout rule the same way all football/soccer leagues worldwide do - it's why they do. (To their credit, they don't observe the away-goal rule either.) However, many people here don't like penalties - in our view, it's a synthetic way to decide a game. Many football/soccer matches don't feature a single penalty attempt during the course of the match; thus, it isn't an absolutely essential part of the game. They CAN appear in games, of course, but they don't have to, and many games don't have a single attempt. Therefore, why impose penalties as the ultimate tie-breaker? It takes a team game with 11 players on each side and reduces it to a series of individual one-on-one contests, each of which is effectively a coin-flip (the shooter scores or does not). That's why we here aren't crazy about them. There's too much left to blind chance. We would prefer that a team game, with all individuals on the pitch playing at the same time, be decided in a team fashion.

So, why do you think that extra time and golden goal combination is less fair than penalties? (Also, please don't regard this post as some kind of flame - it isn't meant to be at all. Very many people, esp. outside of North America, completely agree with you. I just don't understand the general mindset and would like someone to set forth why some prefer the penalties method to break regulation draws over extra time and golden goal - I can't fully get my head around it. Thank you in advance.)
