  1. Discipline is a fantastic album. Starless and Bible Black has my favourite song though, The Night Watch. I wanna visit the Rijksmuseum in The Netherlands... (the song is about the painting The Night Watch by Rembrandt). I've seen his paintings in the Louvre, and by god he is my favourite artist by far.
  2. Any fans of Candlemass or Saint Vitus present?
  3. I don't know about him, but I have a copy of the remastered special edition of "Third". I like it very much, I'm going to check out their other albums in the future.
  4. I don't get this talk of comparing blues to progressive rock. Jazz, as an art form provides more inspiration, in my informed opinion, for 90% of progressive rock bands. I see Jazz Fusion inspired rock more as a progression from late Miles Davis than any snobbish racism aimed at blues and blues fusion groups, such as Led Zeppelin. You only have to look at The Mahavishnu Orchestra for proof that Jazz influences "progressive" music. Also, check out these Swedish prog rock bands from the 90s, they take inspiration from bands like Yes and King Crimson. Änglagård Anekdoten Yeah the names are similar, maybe because the bands are similar.
  5. Also: best prog album of the 90s, Tool can't hold a fuckin' candle to Cynic's "Focus".
  6. Utter BS my man This lacks soul?
  7. I like progressive rock quite a bit. check out the awesome Italian prog rock scene from the 1970s Here's some bands to start out with...most of these bands' records are out of print and very expensive on CD Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Goblin Le Orme Quella Vecchia Locanda There's dozens and dozens more where that came from, those are just the ones I know right now. Goblin did the soundtracks for a bunch of Italian horror flicks, you may have heard of Dario Argento before?
  8. Angels & Demons - 0/5 Star Trek - 3/5 And then of course all the movies I watch at home, but I won't go into those.
  9. Didn't the W.H.O. specifically warn AGAINST doing that?
  10. Oh well, hopefully we won't have a repeat of the flu epidemic at the turn of the 20th century. If that's the case, I'll be heading to the hills in northern Canada to live with the Inuit for a while.
  11. Updated list for me.... Guitarists: Robert Fripp Adrian Belew Steve Howe Al Di Meola Paul Masvidal Drummers: Gavin Harrison Sean Reinert Steve Gadd Tony Williams Bill Bruford *Runners Up Guitar: Allan Holdsworth (I like his experimental stuff, but he sometimes descends into wankiness) John McLaughlin Paco De Lucia Steven Wilson Mikael Akerfeldt Chuck Schuldiner Drums: Mitch Mitchell Buddy Rich Martin Axenrot Robert Wyatt Derek Roddy Flo Mounier
  12. Entombed - Left Hand Path (AWESOME bit of old school Swedish death) Miles Davis - Nefertiti Cynic - Traced In Air Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork

  14. Hey, Juliet, I heard about this just recently....after visiting Juno Beach, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Dieppe last week...let me say I am not amused by their comments.
  15. Happy Solstice! I'll be listening to my favourite pagan music today : P And yes, it IS a shame no one remembers the true origin of Christmas.
  16. Just started A Tale of Two Cities....and damn, Dickens' writing is very dense but very packed with metaphors and unusual descriptions, and other tasty literary techniques. Yes, I just used tasty to describe a novel.
  17. The Counte of Monte Cristo (unabridged version, 1200 pages or so) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Both books are for school, but Monte Cristo is one that I picked, and it is quite good.
  18. The feeling of space in their music is more likely the result of the way they produced their albums. Nowadays music is commonly smashed together to get it to be as loud as possible so as to 'stand out'. But that's a topic for another thread.
  19. How about the entire album "Meddle"? The drum dynamics on that album fit beautifully with the rest of the music, which is part of the reason that is my favourite Pink Floyd album. Speed is only a part of good drumming technique, Nick had a great sense of dynamics (soft and heavy), at least on the older albums. Even if he did lose it as he got older, that doesn't take away from the fact that he was good on those older albums.
  20. Speaking as a drummer myself, I think Nick Mason is a fantastic drummer. And balls to anyone who thinks otherwise.
  21. Änglagård http://www.last.fm/music/%C3%84nglag%C3%A5rd Very reminiscent of 1970s progressive rock, I think those of you into Yes and King Crimson would love them.
  22. Personally, I do 'get over it'. But then it comes back again at a later time, but I always 'get over it' eventually. It is a big thing, if it ever got worse then I suppose I should/would need outside help. I've had panic attacks before and it is not a fun thing to feel completely helpless. I suppose I'm lucky nothing really bad has happened that's worse than a hole in the wall.
