  1. I have an anxiety disorder and am pretty anti-social. So I guess I fit the descriptors of this thread.
  2. The Velvet Underground are only overrated by hipster snobs Like myself....except I don't have anything against The Beatles.
  3. And to add to that post, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher Do it.
  4. So who here likes Classical stuff? Right now I'm getting into Russian composers, Igor Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Sergei Prokofiev. What are everyone's favourite Classical composers/musicians and why? And don't just say "Beethoven" or "Mozart"
  5. I have to say, Paul Gilbert is awesome. He's just as technical as guitarists like Vai or Malmsteen, but his songs are really interesting and creative nonetheless. Even his purely instrumental stuff is awesome, hell, especially.
  6. Lars is now an above average drummer? o_O When did that happen? =P If I were to pick the best Thrash drummer it would be Dave Lombardo...but then again, Metallica isn't Thrash Metal anymore. Anyways...I guess I should come up with a list or something. Guitarists 1. John McLaughlin 2. Frank Zappa 3. Jimmy Page 4. Mikael Akerfeldt 5. Mike McCready Drummers 1. Billy Cobham 2. Bill Bruford 3. Flo Mounier 4. Martin Lopez 5. John Bonham
  7. This guy does a mean bass cover of "The Great Deceiver" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV56fp9x85U
  8. Cryptopsy: The Pestilence That Walketh In Darkness Also, my updated list in alphabetical order Arch Enemy Bloodbath Children of Bodom Cryptopsy Deathspell Omega Dimmu Borgir Mastodon Meshuggah Metallica Necrophagist Nightwish Nile Opeth Pantera Penumbra Slayer
  9. I like... Jeff Beck The Mahavishnu Orchestra Kyoto Jazz Massive Jazzanova Miles Davis John McLaughlin (Solo) Amongst others, but those are the major ones. Kyoto Jazz Massive and Jazzanova are what's called "Nu-Jazz" (Stupid term I know) but they are absolutely amazing and you should check them out right away. KJM adds some pyschedelic elements to their music as well.
  10. Remember, you don't always have to play fast blastbeats with a doublekick, it can be used for finesse and creativity as much as a single kick.
  11. Personally, I am a fan of their earlier stuff more...it's more jazzy, and that's what I like about them.
  12. Here's my list...in alphabetical order Arch Enemy Chevelle (not entirely metal, however a lot of it is) Mastodon Metallica Nightwish Opeth Pantera Tool Not a heck of a lot, that is just what I have on my computer, I am definitely going to get a lot more in the future though, when I find new metal bands to get into.
  13. Sometimes they can add a good element to some of their songs, but he makes up for it by being a phenomenal singer (when he sings normally) and a kickass guitarist.
  14. What is this obsession with playing music as fast as possible?
  15. Jesus, I can barely play consistently at 170 BPM o_O That would be some feat....Billy Cobham could do it I think
  16. Yes, a floor tom can be tuned to sound almost exactly like a bass drum and be used as such...I've done it myself.
  17. That's pretty much my feelings, I'm still looking for that "sound" and probably always will be.
  18. I don't think so, I mean, it's fucking HARD to do a triplet with only one bass pedal, I've only been able to do it a few times the way it sounds on the records.
  19. The Flaming Lips These guys have been around since 1984, 12 albums out, their new stuff is really trippy psychedelic rock stuff. Very very good band, also one of the most creative bands of all time. Tool Progressive metal band, very experimental with different sounds and tones. They're *really* talented musically, Danny Carey is one of the best drummers of all time in my opinion. They have 4 albums one EP, and a box set out right now. Check em' out. If you need more validation that they are awesome, Robert Fripp of King Crimson is a huge fan, and they opened for Tool on one of their tours. Portishead A mixture of Smooth Jazz and Hip-Hop. The singer is a woman named Beth Gibbons, she has an extremely unique voice, what I would consider "Jazz singing". They have a new album coming out this week, as well as two previous albums. Queens of The Stone Age Stoner rock, very heavy riffs and experimental song/album structures. Best way to describe them would be a cross between Nine Inch Nails and Zeppelin. Opeth The band in my avatar, a mixture of Jazz Fusion and Death Metal, very very awesome. They are from Sweden, and they have about 9 albums out. If you need more recommendations than this, let me know.
