  1. i saw the 'beware mr baker' film a little while ago. i'm not a cream fan or baker follower, but i knew it would be an entertaining film, which it is. however, a lot of his put downs of other drummers in it are just silly and not worth too much attention other than in a "what a character" type of observation. he attacks his filmer at the end, hits him in the face with his walking stick and shouts that he's going to kill him. interesting character, but not really a full ticket, at least when a camera is on him, at other times who knows, but from some of the comments from the interviewees it seems that maybe his general demeanor
  2. SAJ, planty did play the general wolfe in coventry, certainly once as the main act. rumours were frequent in those days late 81/ early 82? that he may appear there. he may have got up on stage there another time with a band as a guest (travelling riverside blues band, and the DTs used to play there a lot) but i'm positive it was only one gig with that casual band of the time. it was before his first main solo tour started. i have a clipping from the coventry telegraph at the time, though there's no date on it i live near coventry and used to go to the wolfe and read the telegraph, that's how i'm sure (edited to add the last line)
  3. i don't think those photos were from the wolfe gig in coventry. if you remember the backdrop to the stage always had a general wolfe sign and it would be seen at that angle. planty played the general wolfe for sure. i have a clipping from the coventry telegraph confirming it (no date on it unfortunately) and i know people who were there. he was rumoured to play there about three times that year, but i think he only played there once with his own band. i went the wrong night the shop in the apollo (coventry theatre as was) was named 'the poster place' a great meeting place for music lovers
  4. i'm just glad that they released it, so my only real gripe is the very fast switching of camera angles meaning that we rarely get any lingering shots of anyone or anything. the visual interchanges between the band on stage are great, but there's too much of it, all the time. i'd like to have seen shots of the stage from further back too so that we could have a view of what the audience were seeing when we went to the cinema to see it my mate left at the beginning of kashmir because the visuals were making his head spin, and he was sober
  5. "We came to see Robert Plant - and all we got was Joan Jett. Granted, Jett put on a good show. But couldn't Plant have gone on without Blackwell? Wasn't there one drummer in Norman Friday night who could have filled in, just for one show? How about Jett's drummer. He wasn't busy. Hey, we're the ones who made Plant what he is. We buy his records. We buy the tickets to his show. We deserve something!" what a fool. he obviously thinks anyone who can play an instrument (or drums) can just get up and play set of songs they've never rehearsed just like that. maybe he thinks the tv show fame was spontaneous too
  6. it seems unlikely that a typo error could occur on two releases
  7. hey steve today i noticed that the songwriting credits on rock and roll have changed over the years. on the 4th album, the original SRTS soundtrack and mothership it's credited to all four members of the band but on HTWWW and the new SRTS bonham isn't listed at all. any info on this?
  8. i'd have to ask him why he released the new version of the soundtrack SRTS with the awful edits included and messed up a great opportunity
  9. i was at the troubador in earls court this week and while i know of it's historic musical connections; hendrix, dylan and joni mitchell etc, i hadn't heard that zeppelin had supposedly played and/or partied there after one or more of their earls court gigs. i don't recall reading that before. is that so?
  10. pm me if you will please as i havent access to a scanner, and i'll put it in the posy to you
  11. i found the newspaper cutting from the day after 1 of the general wolfe gigs. unfortunately theres no date attached. i'll be happy to send it to you if you want it. i'll do some researching on local sites to see if i can find any further info on the date of the gig/s as i'm curious myself
  12. steve, i'm pretty sure i have a review of that general wolfe gig somewhere, i'll have a dig out. he played there a couple of times around that time. none of them were ever properly advertised as robert plant, gigs as such and were very low key. the local paper (coventry telegraph) used to make vague references to a possible show by him in their thursday music column. twice i went there on a suggestion and he didnt arrive. i think he also once got up and played with a local band, the travelling riverside blues band, there on a whim. it was a great little venue. if there were 100 people there it worked, if there were 200 it was rammed. it was a very important spot in coventry in the late 70s and early 80s.
  13. no man, it wasnt a typo error. i really rated it, the first one i'd liked for a long while
  14. i really rated it when it came out and was happy about that as i'd not been too impressed with anything after pictures at eleven. i thought his gigs round that period were also good with a band that clicked. i was a little upset that him hooking up with page again would curtail his solo career when he seemed to be really on it. not that i was upset about the reunion of the pair otherwise obviously
  15. very interesting though unpleasant reading. so freddie bannister states that 104000 tickets were sold for the first show and estimates that in total 150000 attended the two shows., thus in his opinion 104000 august 4th and 46000 for august 11th
  16. 1973 - Led Zeppelin-New York,NY/Madison Square Garden holy moly, that was 37 years ago
  17. according to ledzeppelin news on this day in 1999 page presented elvis guitarist scotty moore with a gibson ES295 signature guitar
  18. according to a site my girlfriend looks at ( i dont know which) "on this day in 1973 filmaker joe massot was on his way with a film crew to shoot led zeppelin" yesterday's entry read, and i should have posted it at the time as if its true its quite important "on this day in 1968 jimmy page androbert plant met for the first time at one of roberts gigs"
  19. i'm inclined to suggest keith shadwick's book (i've forgotten the title) as a good general introduction
  20. the dragon suits really came into use on the 75 and 77 tours in 75 he favoured the dragon embroidered black suits (the dragon suit) and for the 77 tour he wore the white suit with embroidered poppys (the poppy suit) after 77 he never wore them, or anything like them again prior to the 75 tour he had started more flashy clothing from the end of 72 and in the 73 tours. these were less obviously themed than the dragon or poppy suits, and featured astrological symbols etc as seem in the movie
  21. evster has posted on this matter several times which you should find with the search facility whatever its meaning may not be known exactly but we do know its been printed in a very old book
  22. you go to get your ears tested danny mate
  23. just before the led zeppelin 4 prints signed by jimmy went on sale, i was in the gallery (st pauls in birmingham, well worth a visit) that did them, talking to the guys that run it. they were telling me that when they had visited tower house to get jimmy to sign them and he had to take a few breaks to rest as his hand was getting cramped and he mentioned jimmy saying he had arthritis. i saw a few of the shots that had been taken of jimmy signing prints at home. he was sat at a large round table that was very baroque and i think had the twelve zodiac symbols around its edge. wearing a black and grey stripey baggy jumper as i recall. i was working near the gallery for a while and went in several times. they have lots of signed rock album prints heavily featuring zeppelin and the floyd. i'd have bought the lot if i could. at that time the signed 4 print was £750 but i notice its nearly double that now. it was mentioned that jasper carrot was intending to buy 20 as an investment. i dont know if he really did or not
