  1. Bonham only stole from the best. The barehanded playing section of his solo was inspired by Joe Morello's solos. Oh and check out this clip of carmine appice from vanilla fudge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI6OhYZ9bi0 Bonzo copped a lot of stuff from carmine and made it his own. Right on the money with saying bonham's playing was erotic. Levon helm was the same way. Those guys could make you feel emotional just from their drumming alone, even if there wasn't anyone else playing with them. On the first couple zep albums you hear kieth moon, watts and a little bit of mitch mitchell. From about the third album on he's distilled his influences and seems to be changing according to the changing sound of the band. Of course, I'm just spekalatin' on a hypotheosis, if ya will. --LG

  5. As far as commercialization goes, rock and roll is showbiz and showbiz is about money. Nobody ever got into showbusiness NOT wanting to make some money, including the great "indie" pioneers". Selling out isn't necessarily always the same as being commercial. Letting "Stairway" be used as back ground music in a commercial isn't the same as rewriting the lyrics to say "...and she's buying a stairway to general electric." As to their legacy being tarnished, I disagree. I saw Sinatra toward the end and he was soused and out of it. Once in a while the magic showed through, but boy was it a rough show. It didn't harm my idea of his legacy. He was arguably the greatest pop performer ever. Nobody'll forget that. Yeah, I know they said it'll never be Zep without Bonzo. Who wouldn't say that after their friend and bandmate has tragically passed? Time passes too. And I'm willing to bet Bonzo would've wanted them to continue whether as Zeppelin or not. Especially if they could keep the spirit of Zep with a new drummer who could do the job. And in his own way, Jason does the job nicely. Lastly, I don't believe in heaven but if it did exist I'm sure Bonzo would've been looking down on the O2 gig pumping his fist and cheering them on like a soccer hooligan. Of course, that's just wishful fan-talk.
  6. Also, the lugs are dead giveaway that his kit is new. They're the mini version of the 70's era lugs. meaning they are reduced in size. If I recall correctly, none of the amber drums are in possession of the Bonhams. I could be wrong on that but at least one amber kit was purchased by some rich guy in Canada. Anywho, those were definately yellow vistas that Jason was playing and they are definately new. ---LG
  7. Sorry, I just watched that QOTSA clip with Grohl, and ummm... no. QOTSA does not sound like LZ and Grohl does not play like Bonham. I think there's a confusion with heavy playing equalling playing like Bonham. His fills are muddy and his kit sounds indistinct (can he tune a drum kit?). Randy Castillo is clearly a better drummer with QOTSA. Grohl looks like he's fighting for his life. I guess that's why he never played with them for any real ammount of time. Don't get me wrong, I loved him with Nirvana, but he fit them with his punk style. Let's face it that's what he is. A punk drummer. There's nothing wrong with that. But he can't swing and I doubt he has the background to play like JHB. JHB was into Motown, Blues, swing, New Orleans Second Line, Joe Morello (hence bare handed playing), Skiffle, Mersy, and 50's era rock and roll. He also played a lot with dynamics and had a finesse and delicacy that I have yet to see from Grohl. Another thing: after watching that QOTSA clip, after looking at all the Zep footage, I have to say that QOTSA were disappointing and bland in comparison. A little monotonous. --LG
  8. Sheesh, what a bunch of whiners. I've never in my life been to a rock concert that didn't have at least one instance of feedback. I've played many a gig and never once had a show without feedback, purposefully or otherwise. Whiney-A$$ kid: "But it doesn't sound as good as my custom home audio system that I spent way to much money on instead of on a woman." AAAWwwww, didums you get upset at the scarey feedback? This is what happens when neurotic post-war boomers raise their kids through micromangement and high-end merchandise as an incentive to be good kids. As David Gilmour said: "Where would Rock and Roll be without feedback?" ---LG
  9. There are unflattering pictures of Zep from the 70's too. So what? Big deal. What's with this generation and their fear of growing old? Because that's what it is. Fear talking. My prediction for my generation (those born in the early 70's) is that when the retirement age starts to creep up, we're gonna hear more and more about their suicides from the desperation of not facing up to the fact that they're not "pretty" anymore. And that'll be good for everybody else. God, what failures we've become. --LG
  10. Jason's snare was a Ludwig Supraphonic (402) chrome over aluminum (called "Luddaloy" back in the day). It's 6.5"x14", and with ten lugs. It's the exact same model that his daddy used and is still being made exactly like it was in the early 70's. Pappa Bonham used Remo heads on the drum (the toms and kick as well): An Emperor coated batter head (which is 2-ply)on top, with an Ambassador clear snare head on the bottom. I'm not sure what Junior uses for heads; they sounded different to my ears but it could just be the way he tunes them (and the mics and sound). Anyway, he sure sounded great monday night. The King is dead, long live the King and all that. --LG
