  1. Brace yourselves, I'm a mechanical engineer and this is going to seem dorky. I have just finished designing a geared transmission shaft that is required to transmit 100 lbf +/-5% to two other gears with resistance torques of 300 lbf each. I designed it to have a 95% reliable infinite fatigue life with a fatigue safety factor of 3.02, and a desired safety factor for yielding of 2.00. In essense, this part will never break, even after a lifetime of the specified load fluctuation (paperclips, for example, do not have infinite fatigue lifes as evident by them breaking after only a few bends back and forth). You can even apply (statically) twice the rated loading, or 210 lbf, before this thing will yield/break. This is for your own safety. Think of a ladder that says it is rated for 250 lbs. Engineers know that a 350 lb person will no doubt use the ladder anyways, hence why we design with safety factors. All this, while decreasing the shaft diameter from 1.38 inches to 1.179 inches. (Saves material. Material saved = higher profit) In addition, I was able to write a Matlab program for a shaft of this type that will solve for the required shaft diameter needed (based on the max. shear stress & distortion energy theorms) for any desired safety factor. The program's required inputs include gear forces, gear diameters, desired safety factor, shaft length, etc. There is no telling just how lame this must sound to all of you. I wouldn't be surprised if 60% of you haven't even made it to this point in my post before moving on to the next one. I guess this is the price I pay. But there is no denying that this is what made me happy today.
  2. Just got done reading "The Battle at Salamis" by Barry Strauss. Its about an epic Greek/Persian naval battle... but also references the battle at Thermopaly, which if you've seen the movie 300, is basically word-for word from this book. Ancient Greece is bad ass.
  3. Offended? No. The "funniness" was due to other motives that I am pretty reluctant to share here - it simply had to be done, which I hope is sufficient. By now I've pretty well deduced that you must've seen what was written there before I edited it, which I had hoped wasn't the case, for the sake of concealing my reckless temerity. What can I say though? Taking the chance that you hadn't seen what I had erased was really not an option. You've heard it all before to be sure, you just hadn't heard it from me - whether or not that would have been some sort of crime I will calculate later. No, I can't say that I was offended - yet I suppose it would only be right if I asked you the same...
  4. holy shit. Ah, maybe what I should have said is, I mean.., um, wow.
  5. We should call whatever page this is (158 or something) the Detroit page. Its interesting to see so many Detroiters running around here because I honestly have never met a true Zeppelin fan in this state and it sucks. I just moved further from Detroit, but Michigan law says that pointing to the general region, by using your hand as an accurate map of the area, still counts as close enough to call yourself a Detroiter. Used to live in Royal Oak, moved just last week to Walled Lake, which is absolutely favorable to the pink-shirted, popped collar "lets make this our own little MTV's "The Hills" of the midwest"-esque doucheness of R.O., because we now live across the street from a god damn lake and have a place to sail ye sailboat. Heres lies the same old, and relatively lame, picture of myself for people who do not desire to weed through the mass of pages to find my likeness:
  6. As far as inventive guitar work goes, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine is always over-looked. People on this forum also seem to forget how Page was sort of slow (comparitively) on the frets after 1971. His real claim to fame IMO is his insane riffs and his work in pioneering creative new studio effects/arrangements. That is why I put Clapton ahead of him I guess, IMO he is the best overall. Its really a toss-up for me between Hendrix and Page for number 2, tho I give it to Hendrix for coming out a few years before Page and being able to recreate what he did in the studio (to some degree) and all that on the guitar live while also being lead singer. Tommy's Top 5 Guitarists Eric Clapton (Cream) Jimi Hendrix (Band of Gypsys) Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
  7. You can't talk about top 5 drummers without mentioning Grand Funk Railroad's Don Brewer. The dude was absolutely phenominal live and hes totally under-rated. Also, how does everyone over-look Gene Krupa? The dude practically brought the drums out of the closet as an instrument in the 1930's... the 1930's for christ's sake - 40 years before the next greats of the 70's Tommy's Top 5 Drummers John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) Danny Carey (Tool) Gene Krupa (Various) Neil Peart (Rush) Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad) Edited to add: I agree with whoever above said Keith Moon is over-rated.

  9. lol, Zeppelin did record it, I've got the studio cuts from 1975 to prove it (and they are mind blowing). I think what you meant to say is that they never released it. Nevertheless, its still a Zeppelin track.

  12. I tend to be more of a fan of bands in their first two or so years. Certainly I favor Zeppelin in 68-71. Once I understand the basics, I move outward to the rest of their stuff... it seems more logical that way. So I thought thats what was going on with me not liking The Who (I tried starting it off with Tommy, which IMO isn't all that great). So I went out and bought their first two albums yesterday and gave them a listen... I think they might grow on me yet. Maybe I just needed to contact their roots? P.S., per people's suggestion I also bought Quadrophenia, but haven't listened yet. Thanks for the help guys!

  14. I've got to say.. the only person who seems to know what they're talking about is Evster. Though, why can't this symbol have multiple meanings... Maybe theres a reason for him picking the symbol that can be interpreted in so many different ways... I mean, wheres the mystery in Robert, John Paul, or Bonzo's symbols? Those are no fun...
  15. LMAO. I just about pissed myself when I heard this one just now... This ones from 1972-06-25 before the song Black Dog. "This is one about uh ahm, a poor dog who uh, really uh... let me tell you about this poor old dog, because he was a retriver in his early days... and the only thing he could ever find in his later days was his ole' lady who lived 2 houses away from where we were recording.., and he used to not see his ole lady quite regularly, but after he boogied and everything else, he couldnt get back! - and we used to carry him back... and this has got nothing to do with that chick in Detroit ... it was a Black Dog." lol... I bet Page is happy he didn't over-look this little snid-bit when putting together the How The West Was Won compilation! I love this one - A really classic song-title story.., as told by Plant himself! Plus, references to women in Detroit, to which I can really relate. Priceless.
  16. People are probably going to jump all over this.. but I have to get to the bottom of this. What is the deal with The Who!? I am an absolutely HUGE fan of music (and anything else for that matter) from 1960-1975. I could never figure out why, but I cannot get myself to listen to The Who the same way I do with Zeppelin, Hendrix, Grand Funk, The Beatles, The Stones, etc. Am I just listening to the wrong albums!? I mean, I have Tommy, My Generation - The Very Best of The Who, and a few bootlegs, none of which I can listen to all the way thru... what am I doing wrong?! Everyone swears up and down by them.., but as hard as I try, I can't find anything spectacular about them aside from maybe the Monterey Pop Festival performance (which I'm afraid might only be good because there is video of it) It just seems weird because I can literally count on one hand the number of bands that I DON'T like from this era... I love everything... except The Who. Someone point me in the right direction.

lol seriously... I can see about 10 places where his penis might be. WTF is this. How is he even standing up for this picture? This thread is clearly no place for a man like myself to congregate... see you elsewhere! lol

lol I've got to hand it to him though... seeing all the girls on this forum go nuts for pictures of this guy... It would take a better man than I not to be so envious. Luckily I still have my young age working for me. I just can't see myself cramming into pants like this on a nightly basis.
  22. lol, I see you read the table... Actually, he is a good friend.., and thankfully, despite what is crudely enscribed on said table , a very hetero friend! P.S. I read on a different thread that you met Jason - very cool indeed!
