  1. No, I haven't tried to locate Newsome.

  2. For what it's worth, according to Billboard Magazine, "Mobile Tape Video" of Detroit was slated to record the 4/30/77 show. A man named Charles Newsome was the firm's president:
  3. The original handbill for the May 1969 Fillmore East shows included 3 dates (May 29, 30, & 31). The Boston Tea Party contract dated 5/6/69 listed the three Boston dates as 5/26, 5/27/ & 5/28. The band ultimately revised the schedule to play just two dates (4 total shows) in NYC (5/30 & 5/31), and moved the beginning of their three-day stint in Boston back a day, and actually played Boston on 5/29.
  4. This is especially true when you consider some of Pamela's recollections have been proven to be incorrect. For example, in one of her books, Pamela claimed the band had played the Whisky a Go Go on April 29-30, 1969 (according to her 1969 journal entry). Jimmy was very sick at the gig and had to be carried off by a roadie. It is painfully obvious that this date is wrong. It has been widely documented that the band played the Whisky on January 2nd-5th, and Jimmy had the flu. Needless to say, her date attribution was incorrect since the Whisky gigs were played in January, not April. Not a big deal, but everyone makes mistakes, and Pamela is no exception.
  5. Maureen Plant definitely attended the 8/9/69 Anaheim Convention Center show since there's a backstage photo of her with Robert and a monkey: http://www.chuckboydsrocknrollphotos.com/Led%20Zepplin/pages/PSTF-005-035-LDZN.html For many years this photo and other photos from the 8/9/69 Anaheim show were attributed to the 8/8/69 San Bernardino show (primarily originating from the "Photographer's Led Zeppelin" book). Also, Anaheim is essentially L.A. (just ask the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, or whatever they're calling themselves this year). Billboard article mentions Tina playing the Casino Theatre of the International Hotel in Las Vegas in August 1969: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a361/AlbumZeppelin/Ikeandtina.jpg Tina at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in August 1969: http://www.vegasretro.com/entertainers/9_tina_turner2.html http://www.vegasretro.com/entertainers/9_tina_turner_3.html http://www.vegasretro.com/entertainers/9_tina_turner.html I would probably include 8/7/69 as another potential date for the Las Vegas show. If the band actually played Berkeley on 8/7/69, how come there are no listings for this concert in the Berkeley Barb, Berkeley Monitor, Berkeley Tribe, Good Times (SF), and several other Berkeley/SF undeground newspapers I checked out. I've never seen any evidence to suggest they played the Berkeley Community Theatre on 8/7/69.
  6. The gig was definitely played at the St. Louis Arena. In Ratner's "Live Dreams" book he listed every Zeppelin concert he saw (and photographed) in person, including the 5/11/73 gig at the Arena: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a361/AlbumZeppelin/scan0010.jpg The marquee photo is a definite match: http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a361/AlbumZeppelin/slarena-edited.jpg BTW, why would the arena advertise an antique show on the marquee 5 weeks before it was coming to the arena (if the marquee photo was taken on 4/15/77, as you suggested)? It makes so much more sense that the 5/18-5/20 antique show was advertised on the night of the 5/11/73 Zeppelin show.
  7. There's plenty of evidence to suggest the alleged 4/18/69 NYU University date was never played. Some examples: This 4/18/69 press release states that they start their 2nd US Tour in SF on 4/24/69: All of these articles indicate that the tour starts in SF on 4/24. In fact, Page mentions in the 4/12/69 edition of Record Mirror that they are headed back to the US on 4/20: Other compelling evidence that this gig was not played: - The 4/19/69 edition of Disc Magazine says that Led Zeppelin are to leave tomorrow (Friday, April 18th) for the USA. - How could the band play NEW YORK CITY (!!!) and there not be a single piece of tangible evidence anywhere (New York Times, Village Voice, etc.)?
  8. Interesting. More than likely, the original tour dates listed for May were incorrect. I found these ads which place the Grimsby and Beckenham shows on the same days in July (19th & 20th), as had been listed for May:
  9. I'm not sure if Bonzo was in the band at the time, but according to IT ads, Tim Rose also toured England in May 1968 as well. These ads have Tim Rose at Grimsby on 5/19, Beckenham on 5/20, and Nottingham on 5/21:
  10. Steve, I believe the date was actually one day earlier, on August 3, 1968 (according to that Lemon Tree issue).
  11. Meg, The first time I read this I thought the same thing. But when I looked closer, it appears that Bonzo intended to play with "Uncle Joseph" AFTER he concluded his tour with Tim Rose. Needless to say, those intentions changed after Page saw Bonzo play with Rose at the Country Club on 7/31/68 and subsequently convinced him to join the band.
  12. According to legend, didn't Robert expect JPJ to be some "bloke with a pipe" upon hearing that a session musician was the bass/organ player for Jimmy's new Yardbirds? If that's truly the case, then Robert could not have met JPJ before then.
  13. On the same day Korner played that gig, Plant played with the Band of Joy. This date was already on the itinerary posted to this thread, but I don't believe the actual ad had been posted before: I've also attached a scan of the question Ritchie Yorke asked Robert Plant about his pre-Zep days in the 4/11/70 NME. This was referred to a few posts back, but I figured I'd post the actual scan itself:
  14. Here's an International Times ad for a 3/8/68 Alexis Korner gig:
  15. If you look at the Robert Plant page of this early press release for the January 1969 Boston gigs, it mentions the first gig in Sweden (which would have been on 9/12/68 at the Grona Lund Amusement Park (Tivoli Garden): http://ledzeppelin.com/lzprogrammes/69_boston.html This same information was repeatedly used throughout press releases in 1969, including the January Fillmore East program: http://www.ledzeppelin.com/lzprogrammes/69_fillmore_jan_programme.html I've also read this story in various early newspaper articles (which were essentially glorified press releases). Does it really matter if it happened? If it didn't, I have the give the PR machine some serious credit for coming up with an awesome tall tale!
  16. Thanks Steve. It's pretty obvious we all share a similar passion! Here's another interesting little tidbit I found (from 4/23/69): It wasn't even open for two years yet and they were already dumping it! Ironically enough, Bob Eubanks of "The Newlywed Game" fame ended up promoting a lot of shows at the Ice Palace. Here's an article from 5/31/73:
  17. Here's the article. It was in reference to the 4/18/70 show at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix: Here are some ads, etc. for the 4/19/70 cancelled show:
  18. A little more background info on the Las Vegas Ice Palace:
  19. Geez, not exactly a recipe for success, is it? After all, he was called a concert promoter!
  20. Meg, I believe Blocoboy's research confirmed that Jimmy and Robert didn't meet on 7/20/68. He found an ad that showed that Obs-Tweedle played the Connaught Hotel in Wolverhampton on 7/20/68 (so it wasn't the "teacher training college near Birmingham" where Page saw Plant for the first time). Blocoboy also dug up ads for 7/22, 7/27/ & (now) 7/28. All that being said, the basic premise of your comment is still true. Hopefully an ad will eventually be found for the gig that Page first saw Plant.
  21. The Las Cruces, New Mexico and Tucson papers had a weekly syndicated feature called the "Las Vegas Scene" which listed where all the "stars" were playing in Las Vegas. It lists a LOT of venues (Caesar's Palace, Dunes, Flamingo, Sands, Sahara, International, Thunderbird, Stardust, and many, many others). It also lists a lot of artists, but mainly typical Las Vegas "show" types. I have checked 1969 and have not seen any reference to the Zep gig. I'll keep digging.
  22. Steve, that last yard is usually the toughest! Postscript to story: The marriage lasted just 13 days and was annulled on July 9, 1970. Interestingly enough, Patti Duke had a baby boy named Sean who was born in February 1971. Though long-rumored to be the son of actor John Astin (Addams Family fame), DNA results proved Mike Tell was actually Sean Astin's biological father. Sean Astin is also an actor and was the lead character in the movie "Rudy" and also acted in "Lord of the Rings," as well as many other roles.
  23. Here's a photo of the back of Ice Palace at the Intersection of Karen Avenue and State Street (from the outside of the Village Square Commercial Center): Here's a photo of the entrance to the Ice Palace from inside the Village Square Commercial Center: Here are a few photos of the inside of the Ice Palace:
