If thats the case, why would they drop the speed of the song in the first place when all they would have to do is add an effect after the fact on Plants voice. I've been in a studio more than once or twice over a 25 year career as a professional musician and what you're saying would be completely redundant in regards to multi-track recording techniques.

If you can prove that by having Jimmy or someone else explain that I will buy it. I don't think they do what you say they do (slow that track down for vocals then speed it up) because Roberts voice sounds normal in the beginning but at the end it is altered up moreso. If they did that, because of Roberts vocals are higher than the beginning, the music would be in a different key at the end and it isn't. Not to mention the bleeding and detuned issues from slowing down then speeding it up. Roberts voice is detuned like a chorus pedal or pitch shifter but the track isn't shifted at all.So for the record if you can prove what you said, I'm calling bullshit.

Is there any information on the stage monitors used by Zeppelin anywhere? This would be quite facinating since we could see who listened to what and maybe why. And Cactus I hear what your saying. And speculation it is for sure, however I think more bass would make more sense since the drums always cut through everything and especially since Bonham wasn't exactly using brushes when he played. Page probably wanted to hear Plant upfront also. Who knows. I certainly would like to find out.

I understand and I was refering specifically about the monitor mixes as well. That would be an excellent topic though, that being how the band prefered their onstage setup. Page speaks volumes about studio techniques but rarely regarding the actual gig specs in terms of sound.

Not to be nit picking here but, after many hundreds of gigs, 9 1/2 times out of 10 it is the bass that get's lost before the drums and also Page probably would want to hear the changes Jones was playing moreso than what Bonham did, aside from the regular quese. And besides, I don't think Page had a problem hearing Bonham.

I have never read 'evidence' that the tape was sped up before. Guitar World 1993 - GW: "Houses" is so bright-sounding. Did you vari-speed the tape up a notch to get everything to sparkle more?? Page: No, the only song I can think of that we vari-speeded up were a couple of overdubs on "Achilles Last Stand". However, I applied the vari-speed to the overall track of "No Quarter". Not sure, but will check my references, but I remember reading that no effects were put on Robert's voice and that surprised me because I always thought something was on it. I'll check and get back.

I've seen photos in which various members of Zep were wearing tour jackets ie,,..North America Tour 1975. Who were issued these jackets besides the band? Roadies, record execs,..were they given away by radio stations etc? Just curious.

This is a post I submitted last month which had varying replies. I have found one source but not the one I remember about Page commenting on Robert Plant's future with Zeppelin. I will keep looking for that one. The one I did find instead was of an interview with Danny Goldberg by Steven Rosen. This was in Guitar World, July 1986,Special Jimmy Page Edition, Vol.7, No.4 entitled Danny Goldberg's Hideaway From p.47 Though Goldberg only worked with the band from 1973 to 1976, he did hear that in the beginning years, Plant was "happy to have the job" as vocalist in Zeppelin. He was not the first choice (Tery Reid almost landed the spot) and after the first tour there was serious talk over whether Robert should continue. "So Robert had the odyssey of being the new kid, barely able to get and keep the job, through ultimately becoming the most successful solo member in the group." Now like before, I'm just repeating this from an interview source and have no reason to believe it is true or not, just another tidbit if true, to add to the collective mindset regarding Zeppelins success

This discussion about studio musicians reminds me of Steve Lukather of Toto who probably played on most of the big hair band records in the '80's that had hit songs. And believe me, those bands didn't like the word getting out either Just another example of how image over substance participated in killing good music and 20 years later how that has magnified itself. "It was the first time I'd seen the lads play," he remembers, positively glowing at the thought. "It was just an absolutely am-aaaaz-ing concert. No band has ever played rock 'n' roll like they played it. It was just an incredible experience to see that band in the Albert Hall environment. They were just so good that night.They closed the show with a rock 'n' roll set which was probably the best I've ever heard them play ( even better than the rock 'n' roll set they later played in Osaka, Japan, with me on bloody bass)- certainly they were better than I've heard anyone else ever play a rock 'n' roll set." (Carson has since become the group's closest personal link with the record company) Re-reading this it probably means Carson got up and played bass in Japan, but the way Yorke uses parenthesises throughout the book, interjecting his own thoughts in them, it led me to believe he got up and played. Perhaps not the most cohesive writing style for this example

Didn't know it was wrong info. After Steve's post I checked Ritchie Yorke's book, 'The Led Zeppelin Biography,' and realized he was the one who got up in Japan.(p.67) not Carson. Can you give me a reason why you are questioning me for that?

In '67, Traffic recorded 'Dear Mr.Fantasy.' Although Dave Mason was guitarist for Traffic, the solo played sounds remarkably like Jimmy Page and even has a few signature riffs of Page's that show up later in live versions of 'Thank You' I know Jimmy was on tons of sessions at the time, one favourite being Joe Cocker's 'With A Little Help From My Friends.' Any way Jimmy may have layed down that solo in Dear Mr. Fantasy for Traffic?

What's Phil Carson up to these days? Is he still alive? And did he ever play onstage with Zep after,....Japan?? doing Whole lotta Love on bass?

Again I may be wrong but,...I believe the article I read had Jimmy stating that near the end of the first tour, he was thinking of a possible replacement for Robert. I think because something like Robert was feeling homesick and wanted to see his wife. The reason I remember this is because the interviewer made a big deal about it saying he couldn't believe Jimmy was thinking that way, after their initial success etc etc until Jimmy said it was time to move along with the interview. It may have been a flippant remark but I'm sure it started with Page saying something to the effect of 'it almost was all for naught,' meaning Zeppelin almost never took off because the reasons above. I don't know guys. There is a 100% chance I may be wrong but I have tons of Page and Zep interviews and near certain I read that. I even remember telling a friend about it at the time I read it. I will look for the needle in the hay stack.

This may have been asked and answered elsewhere but am not sure. I recall reading an interview with Page and he said something to the effect that Plant was being considered to be replaced by another singer well after the first record and subsequent tours had happened, but kept his job by writing 'Thank You.' Can that be confirmed?
