Saw Joe "Satch" Satriani for the first time last night at the Royal Oak Music Theater, just outside of Detroit. What can I say, the guy's incredible, but most musicians already know that. I enjoyed the smallness of the ROMT, although the cigarette smoke was stifling, and the sound was great. His bass player, Stu Hamm, did a rendition of Going to California on the bass that blew me away. Opening up was Leslie West and Mountain and that was a blast from the past. I saw them when I was fifteen or so at the old Eastown and they too, blew me away. What was ironic was that the set started then with "Never in My Life" and it was the same here. I miss Felix Papalardi, though All and all, a good show

I believe Don Kirshner was their music guru through the first two albums, after they fired him, cuz according to the group, he was a prick and a major control freak, they took over the reigns but had no idea what they were in for. Again, that was according to Mike Nesmith. And it was Nesmith and Peter Tork who were actual musicians. Jones and Dolenz were actors. Whatever people might say about the Monkees, the TV show was hilarious and I still get a kick out of watching them. I love the songs too. The best part of the show was the end when they would play a song. Can't remember the song, but Mickey Dolenz plays a moog synth on it, and I crack up watching him patch cords in and out of it like an operator at the phone company.

Great story ZFF. It leads me to another question that's been burning my brain for some time. I was trying to think of who self produced their own group before Jimmy Page and the only one I can think of is, of course, Brian Wilson. I'm sure there were others who did, but of the big name acts such as, The Beatles, Stones, the Who, Dylan, etc., they all had outside producers. Any you know of?

Screw that. They were as good as anything out at the time, along with those other groups i've mentioned. What may have hurt them is pop type groups like Blink 182, Sloane and Lit. People just can't get away from that three minute attention span.

I like these guys alot. I think they sound very Zeppelinesque, especially the song "The Oaf" Too bad they broke up after only two albums, but lead vocalist Ian Thornley did release a record with his new band a couple of years ago. Haven't heard much since. Two other groups I like from the same era are Tantric and Days of the New. Oh yea, and Tea Party. Awesome groups.
