  1. Yes, in a way. But even more "Rainbow", the band Blackmore created in 1975 after leaving Purple. The Dio era albums are the blueprint for power metal and metal in general. Especially songs like "Kill The King" or "Stargazer". If you don't know Rainbow, you don't know much about hard rock Ritchie Blackmore at his peak was really something special. Page couldn't hold a candle to him. It's not even close. Sorry guys. I've been studying Purple and Zeppelin for years, especially from a guitar players' perspective. Yet for me it has always been Zep > Purple, and it remains to this day. Reason: Zep has better songs, better grooves and they had Bonzo and Jones. Live, however, Purple were much more consistent. Page and Plant have always been Zep's weak spots in live concerts. Ian Gillan was a better singer than Plant in the 70's, even though he struggled with the high screams in "child in time" sometimes. I think Gillan was much better trained than Plant. And if you really think Zep were better at improvising, you probably haven't listend much to DP from the old days. For the record: I'm talking about the Mark II and III era Purple here (pre 1994). Long story cut short: There is so much to enjoy about both bands. If you are new with Purple, check out "In Rock", "Made in Japan" and "Machine Head" first. Then "Burn". Check out this peak Blackmore solo from 1993. He really was a guitar god. https://youtu.be/Mc6GLYatAfY?t=250
  2. He could be too busy practicing for his new solo record. Maybe we will see him playing somewhere soon 🤣
  3. So Jimmy's "promises" remain nonsense as usual. Disappointing. Wait, next we will see a remastered "DVD" I guess. The only release that hasn't been re-issued yet. New live material remains an illusion.
  4. Plant is also out of pitch on some parts after the guitar solo. Jimmy would have to use pitch correction.
  5. This was debated here some time ago I think. We will never know how Robert's career would have evolved if Jimmy didn't ask him to join LZ. However, one think is quite obvious: He wouldn't have the same privileged life hadn't he been in Zep.
  6. Here is the "full" version of the songs released to date, including Immigrant song and full Stairway to heaven. Unfortunately not downloadable from YT :/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Buxzdq5oqxI
  7. Maybe I should give it another listen. I listened to both shows a few years ago and remember that I wasn't impressed with Jimmy. I repect other opinions, of course. My problem with the 1980 shows beside Page's heroin demons is the sound(s). For example, I don't like Jones' keyboard and bass sound (especially his sound on stariway sucks and doesn't fit the song). Also the drums sound somewhat dry. The whole feeling of these shows is a bit negative IMO. Edit: I just finished listening to Stairway from the Frankfurt show. I usually use Stairway to judge Jimmy's playing on a given night. Here he sounds REALLY awful. It hurts to listen to this crap, especially when you know all the good versions of that song 😕
  8. Well, his solos on the 1980 tour suck. His fingers are so sticky, it hurts me listening as a guitar player myself. His rhythm work is ok, though.
  9. Overrated: 1980 tour I never understood why it gets some praise. Well, some performances are ok. However, from a guitar players POV the whole tour is just an awful display of professionalism, even by a R'n'R Band's standard.
  10. Thanks. Never listened to this show. I found another version of it that is better sounding than the "Badgeholders annual meeting" version.
  11. Here's a nice show when Toni could still sing. A true bluegrass legend and one of the best acoustic guitar players ever!
  12. One of the best shows I've ever seen. High class playing from both.
  13. Well, from a singers perspective, Plant's part after the solo is an abolute embarrasment.
  14. Looking back at Grant's decision regarding TV performances, it sucks that he didn't allow the band to be filmed more often. There is so much more video material of other bands from that time. Queen is one of these bands that was filmed quite often. There is at least one profesionally filmed concert from each year starting in 1974. Now we are happy that so much footage of them exists. Imagine HTWWW was filmed, or something from 71.... Is there any chance film footage of a festival gig from 1969 exists? There is so much festival footage of Hendrix for example. Or was Grant always there to prevent them from filming, even at such events?
  15. Yes we will get alternate mixes from LZ I. "Babe I'm gonna leave you" without guitar overdub, "Communication Breakdown" with a louder hi hat, "Good Times Bad Times" with a louder bass. Stuff like this. My high hopes for amazing live releases just went from 100 to 0 today.
  16. I really don't care for a reunion at this point. In 2007 I would have loved to see more shows and get the chance to maybe see them live myself.. But these days I'd prefer old concert releases much more. I wouldn't mind if they sat together at an event to play "That's The Way" or "Going to california". Why not do that? But I really doubt Jimmy is able to play a full show these days. 02 was already tough for him to go through all these songs.
  17. Surely they will. If it is the book they say "we want Southampton 1973", if it is Southampton they say "We want Japan 71", if it is Japan 71, they say "We want Bath 1970" lol My preference list would be: Japan, Bath, Southampton, Book. Would take a video over all 4 together though.
  18. Looks more like a blackbird though What do you think they'll announce?
  19. As long as it is multitracked live stuff I'll welcome it. Maybe Montreux 1970? Hopefully our high hopes will get satisfied this time.... I guess it will be information about the book only
  20. My favourite of the younger guitar players. Maybe one of my favourite ever. Great taste and everything.
  21. Is this show regarded as a great show?? I've never listened to it, just a few minutes of the Stairway solo and I think it sounds great. What do the experts say, is it a good performance? Sound quality is nice.
  22. Good songwriters, yes, but very weak performers (out of time, out of tune). Mick Taylor was the only one in the band who played his instrument above beginner level.
  23. I forgot the mandoline and acoustic guitar. So I assume all drum mics were mixed together in one recorded track? Say they had 8 drum mics, but on record it is only 1 track? Assuming that is the case, you can't do any post-mixing on the drums and we'd get the drum mix of that evening. Since they said the recordings sound awful I guess there was a problem with this recording. We don't know what the condition of the tapes is and what the seperate tracks contain.
  24. This is a huge disappointment. Nobody needs a remastered HTWWW. Only a remixed version would be welcomed (from my side). No Bonus tracks? WTF really. This is only $$$-making at its best. I fear this was the "Mastering" that John Davis mentioned. The Japan 1971 tapes seem unlikely to be relased. I read about them again in "The Concert File" and Grant said the quality was too bad. Robert said the same about the sound. They only recorded 6 tracks which is a bit few for a good sound quality. Assuming vocals, bass, melotron, guitar each have one track, only two tracks remain for the drums. It is almost impossible to get a good sound with only two drum tracks, at least for Jimmy's liking. I'm sure most fans here would welcome even a not-so-good-sounding release as long as we get something NEW at least.
