Discovering Led Zeppelin

For me it was my cousin. I remember we were riding in his girlfriends car and he said "hey man have you ever heard any Led Zeppelin?" I said no. He put the music on and thus began my journey... :D

It was at my cousin's house. They had a pool table and my brother and I would listen to Led Zeppelin with them while shooting pool. I was 5-7 years younger than the rest of the guys. I was around ten or eleven. It was Led Zeppelin II. We all used the pool cues to emulate Pages blistering solos. Side one of Led Zeppelin II has to rank as one of the best album sides in history. I do believe I'll crank that up in a bit, for old times sake.

I'd heard them my whole life, but never realized who they were. Rock & Roll was played in gym one day and I told my friend "Hey, that's the song from the Caddy commercial!" Then my Uncle gave my mom Early Days/Latter Days for Christmas. Soon after I heard Immigrant Song on School of Rock and loved it. "Hey Mom, is this on your CDs?". So then I put the Cds on my iPod that I had just gotten for Christmas and listened to them. Over. And over. Some time later I heard Ramble On on the radio and said "Whoa, they sing about LotR!" It was almost a year later I saw the Albert Hall performances and fell in love.

Thus the adventure begins...

Great story, ms zeppelin! I first heard them on the Cadillac commercial also! :D After hearing that commercial I began to get interested in older music, and I found my local classic rock stations on the radio and heard R&R. The announcer said the song was a Led Zeppelin song (I had no idea that's what LZ sounded like!!), and I was hooked from then on. About a couple years later, I watched TSRTS, and I REALLY became a huge fan.

Wow I guess those Led Zeppelin Cadillac commercials did their purpose then! Indeed, they were quite catchy. ;)

How's it going "MightyZep?" Itsn't it something that all of our older cousins are responsible for our musical education and roots. My older cousins had a whole encyclopedia of albums by different artists as well as stacks and stacks of 45 RPM records. After school, they would blast their stereo system so loud that their house turned into the neighborhood jukebox. The Police would also be dispatched over to my cousin's house quite often. This would go on for most of the day and practically every night. There was never any peace and quiet in my cousin's neighborhood. ROCK ON!

My friend's older brother was into heavy rock music, we were into more Bubble Gum type music.

She played his record with "The Lemon Song" for me, my first Zepp song. :D

I was then kind of intimidated by them at first, their music was too sexual.

Hey, I was young and innocent at the time! :)

It just took 30 years for me to re-discover them and realize what I was missing!

No other band's music can come close to the light and shade of Zeppelin's music, in my opinion.

They are the greatest rock band that ever was.

Edited for spelling of "Lemon". LOL

How's it going "BUCK'EYE DOC?" Bubble Gum Music, Artists such as DAVID CASSIDY, BOBBY SHERMAN, THE OSMONDS, DONNY OSMOND, THE JACKSON FIVE, MICHAEL JACKSON, THE DE FRANCO FAMILY, SHAUN CASSIDY, ANDY GIBB and LEIF GARRETT to name a few, would turn into a worldwide phenomenon. ROCK ON!

How's it going "BUCK'EYE DOC?" I remember these songs well! Looks like I'm going to have to write a thread on THE OHIO EXPRESS starring their song "Yummy Yummy Yummy (I Got Love In My Tummy)! I should also write a thread on LEIF GARRETT. Do you remember seing his story on VH-1's Behind The Music? Someone wrote a thread on THE ARCHIES a while back but I don't remember who it was. ROCK ON!

For me, it started in the beginning, when LZ was basically unknown. It was late winter, early spring of 1969 and my best bud's older brother came back from the record store with a new album that had the most awesome looking cover on it. Just looking at the front made you know that this was gonna be good and heavy. And of course, it was all that and more. The first organ riffs of YTIGC made me melt and when I heard that voice, it was unlike anything i'd ever heard before. The song that really sold me, though, was Communication Breakdown. When that played, I believe we were jumping around the room, air guitaring for all we were worth. Yep, it was a life changing experience and i've never been too far away from Zep since.

btw, i was all of thirteen at the time, but was more advanced in my music preferences than most kids my age back then. Many were still listening to The Monkees at the time, nttawwt, but they were defo considered bubble gum and of course, uncool to hippies like me. B)

Yep, I first heard heavy rock in the back rooms of my older cousins' house. I still remember how they daringly scribbled suggestive sayings all over their Zep III album cover, next to each little picture. We were like Amish rebels.

How's it going "Aquamarine?" We wouldn't want to do that to you! You made it sound like I'm torturing you! Ha Ha! Lets just hope that the many Bubble Gum fans here on the Forum won't bring up anymore of the Bubble Gum artists and their songs. Did someone say Davey Jones on THE BRADY BUNCH? Ha Ha! ROCK ON "Aquamarine!"

I was essentially raised on it...My mom knew no lullabies so she sang me Beatles songs and songs by The Rolling Stones. When I was six my favorite bands were The Beatles, The Stones, Steely Dan and Bob Dylan. I found a Led Zeppelin Shirt in my mom's closet that belonged to my dad when they were still together. I asked her about it and she said It was a band, and that they were good, but the Beatles and the Stones were better.

When I was 8 I went out for a drive with my dad, and we were having an argument about music. I was admantly defending the Stones while he was pulling for Zeppelin. The argument got pretty heated and at one point he just shushed me and put a tape in and simply said "Listen". I remember quite clearly, the song was "Ramble on".My mind was BLOWN, man. I just sat there listening in awe, I'd never heard anything like it. From then on they were my favorite band.

I'm sad to say that I strayed away from them when I turned 12, because I was in my "emo phase" and looking back I cant BELIEVE how obnoxious I was and how unbelievably bad my music taste became. I seriously had better musical taste when I was 7 than when I was 12 and 13. All I listened to were crap emo bands and crap screamo bands. Ugh, I'm so ashamed. One day, while cleaning out the attic at my father's house I found a bunch of old Vinyls, one of them being Led Zeppelin IV (I didn't know though, I mean, no where on it does it say Led Zeppelin. But I thought the picture was nifty so I put it on). I put it on the turn table. The minute I heard Robert sing "HEY HEY MAMMA, SAID THE WAY YOU MOVE" I had a grin on my face. I couldn't forget Robert's voice even if I tried. I remember just sitting there and listening to Zoso start to finish, twice.

I'm 16 now, and I still adore Led Zeppelin. And I can never thank my father enough for introducing me to the greatest band of all time. I'm sorry that it's so long, I'm in a writing sort of mood. x)

Ugh, I feel like a loser. Everyone else got introduced to Led Zep by a cool uncle or a cool cousin or older brother...I got introduced to it by my dad

My brother was too busy listening to Creed and Green Day. And if my uncle lived up in in Jersey instead of Arizona, He'd probably show me Led Zep. He was into that, or so I've been told.

When I was about 9 or 10, my older brother was listening to them on a cassette tape someone made for him and the song was "Bonzo's Montreaux". It was a different sounding song, so it got me interested in them. However, when I saw them at "Live Aid" (although the performance wasn't that great) that really got me hooked for life, LOL.
