After reading that post, how do we know that the John Paul Jones they are talking about is THE John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin? For all we know the Mayor of Memphis (or some other city dignatary) is named John Paul Jones!

The article references John Paul Jones as a celebrity coach. Is there another celebrity named "John Paul Jones"? Maybe Sam can confirm this appearance. My educated guess is that he is working in Nashville or Memphis during that time and agreed to help a local charity, which if accurate, is very nice of him.

The only other famous person I know of with that name is the father of the American Navy and he's been dead about 200 years.

It's probably the same JPJ -- Jack Jones -- for whom the UVa arena is named. He is a lifelong resident of Memphis. See JPJ Link

I would bet AWABW is right but why not buy a ticket to help out the charity. You could wear your Zeppelin Concert tee just in case he is wrong.

Charity basketball is always a lot of fun, however my Kentucky Wildcats have hired a new coach and I am saving my money for real games. That and the fact Memphis is a three hour drive...

Hey Knebby, do they even have basketball in England? I was wondering how a Brit would coach basketball.

Hi - yeah they do, but on a much smaller scale. It's still kind of an underground sport. I'd be surprised if JPJ could actually coach but hey strange things happen. :)

JPJ and basketball would be a strange combination. Robert would have been a great power forward had he been American and steered into basketball at an early age, given his athletic build. However I fell for the news article because as you say, strange things happen.LOL

Wouldn't his hair get in his eyes and wouldn't he trip up in those platform shoes? :D

I think it's a different JPJ. Check out this article:

http://www.memphisdailynews.com/editorial/...l.aspx?id=26165

That shows you how far apart Memphis and Nashville are, I had no idea there was a "John Paul Jones" local celebrity there. Although my boss grew up in Memphis and he was confused as well, because he says everyone in Memphis refers to him as "Jack Jones".

The first time I read that article I though I had finally overdosed on antihistamines. I simple could not imagine a Brit coaching basketball. Not saying it couldn't be done, but....

When you have time Google a player named "Joakim Noah". The hair would have been a non-issue. The shoes, I don't know. But of course I grew up in Kentucky, where parents will actually place baby-size basketballs in cribs. We take our basketball, bourbon and racehorses very seriously here. There are no obstacles to basketball in KY, especially if a kid grows over 6 feet tall!
