That was hard! It's hard to narrow it down to 10 and in some cases, pick the essential album of that artist. Some artists have lots of albums I consider essential.

I don't know if all of these qualify as hard rock albums, but these are my pics.

The Beatles~Abbey Road

Led Zeppelin~IV

Metallica~Master of Puppets

Nirvana~Nevermind

Pink Floyd~Dark Side of the Moon

The Doors~Strange Days

Jimi Hendrix~Are You Experienced

AC/DC~Highway to Hell

John Lennon~Imagine

Rush~2112

Some people may not classify Nirvana and Pearl Jam as "hard rock", but I think they should be included.

I'm not sure what else Pearl Jam would be classified as but they most definitely sound like "hard rock" to me. Now, The Doors, David Bowie, the Beatles, John Lennon and the Rolling Stones, I'm not so sure of. Some may have elements of that in their music but "hard rock" most certainly isn't the first thing to come to mind when I think of any of those artists.

I belong to other message boards and have seen similar threads and when people suggest bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden....basically any of the grunge/alternative bands from the late 80s-early 90s, I keep seeing posts saying "grunge isn't hard rock, they're not like _____". I don't agree with that opinion, I was merely stating that someone here might subscribe to it.

I think some of those bands are more steeped in the sound of traditional rock such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam but got labeled "grunge" because it was the in phrase that was so freely being tossed around back then. Not to mention their respective cities of origin. I think they all have punk rock/alternative influences but they aren't as easily recognizable in their sound as they were with bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney, etc.

I would easily include Nirvana as Hard Rock.

Thriller would not make my Hard Rock list though.... although "Beat It" Rocks..

When the Doors rocked hard... that was defintely Hard Rock... Break On Through, Light My Fire....

Other bands I would consider Hard Rock would be Filter, The Offspring, Marilyn Manson, and GWAR...

Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin

Machine Head - Deep Purple

Paranoid - Black Sabbath

Ten - Pearl Jam

Rocks - Aerosmith

Master of Puppets - Metallica (not 'Hard Rock' per se, but an essential album nonetheless)

Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth

Danzig - Danzig

Cream - Wheels of Fire

The Stooges - The Stooges

Edit: This is the eleventh but what the hell, imo Robin Trower's album "Bridge of Sighs" is ESSENTIAL.

That list will probably be completely different in a couple of weeks.
