Reggie29
First Test in Wales started today. 127 years ago ths great tradition started in England when Australia beat the Poms at their own game, Cricket. It is one of international Cricket's most celebrated rivalries. The series is named after a satirical obituary published in an English newspaper, The Sporting Times, on 29th August 1882 after the match at The Oval in which Australia beat England on an English ground for the first time. The 2nd September death notice stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media then dubbed the next English tour to Australia (1882–83), as the quest to regain The Ashes. TheZeppyWanderer
best of luck Reg (but not TOO much !) tell you what as well - no McGrath, no Warney, no Gilchrist - I'll probably be eating these words later on, but I really do fancy our chances

Well you do have the home advantage! I'm not worried about our bowlers, it's our batsman that have to fire up! I can't believe Brett Lee's luck, he manages to come down with an injury just before matches. Ricky Ponting's got unfinished business from 2005 and this may be his last UK tour. leddy
An even first day me thinks, if we kick on past 400 it would be good but I think we might get to 380 which on this wicket would be ok, think this should be the closest contest in years.

I hope it's a close contest. What was Pietersen thinking? I heard a rumour that if by some stroke of misfortune we lose the first test, Warney will make a comeback! leddy
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I don't know what he was thinking, he has a rush of blood sometimes, but he can be a match winner. Think we are going to have to bat for our lives to draw this one.

England: all out - 435 & 2-20 Australia: 6-674 dec I must say I'm impressed with the Pommy bowlers, they all got hundreds!
TheZeppyWanderer
What we can we say Reg, you blokes must be absolutely dumbstruck, shellshocked, and gobsmacked A fantastic rearguard action from England, and living proof that a draw can sometimes be as psychologically fantastic as a win - but no way would Aussie teams of the past fail to put this one to bed - they NEVER let anybody off the hook. leddy
Well you are off to a good start! Very proud of the Boys , a bit of fighting spirit at last. Just want it to be a close series. But we need to improve for Lords as we do not have a good record there against them. If it had been England in the position of the down unders and we had failed to get the last wicket, our press would have taken us to the cleaners. It was pure theatre and my nails are in shreds Well done to the ladies too, Just need a draw to retain the Ashes.

Hardly, disappointed with the weather though. You blokes should be thankful for the rain interruption otherwise it would have been a demoralising defeat by lunch. Out batted and out bowled the Poms, 670+ runs and 19 wickets, yeah we are in real trouble. What happened to that show pony Pietersen? Draws are never ever as good or better than a win. A draw is like kissing your sister, nice but nothing to get excited about.
leddy
Draws are never ever as good or better than a win. Very true but I seem to remember 4 years ago when you got a draw , your balcony were celebrating like they or you had won, so maybe your line isn't true. And out batted ..yes and bowled...yes but you still couldn't beat us, and using the old rain as an excuse. if your good enough you would have won, its swings and roundabouts and all countries have suffered to weather.. You will loose the Ashes mark my words...
TheZeppyWanderer
well, our tail has wagged TWICE in the same match - in the first innings the last 3 wickets put on a hundred runs, and as quickly as if it was a one day international - second innings, the 10th wicket partnership hung around to save the game for 11 overs. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the great Aussie sides would always mop up the tail cheaply and quickly - and although yes, we were outplayed overall, this is why I believe we have a chance because this Australian side is just not as ruthless and clinical as their predecessors. and that's not knocking this side, it's only stating the facts - I mean how can you possibly replace Warne and McGrath, well you can't , these guys are all-time greats. You will loose the Ashes mark my words... My line is very true from where I sit. The difference in 2005 was, we were playing for a victory (something the poms should try more often), not just going through the motions hoping for a draw. So in that instance it was nearly as good as a win and definitely better than a loss. Better to go down swinging and lose than to go into a shell and die wondering, what if. You know, it's all about giving it your best shot. The weather was never used as an excuse, it is one of the many variables like injuries, time wasting and trainers constantly interrupting play. Even the British commentators were critical of the English tactics. After all one is expected to win on one's home soil, aren't they!? When you blokes can win away from home (when was the last time?), then you will be the better team. Sorry to say that you are wrong, it is lose not loose and we won't. TheZeppyWanderer
day one of the second Test at Lord's, and a very satisfactory one for England. 364 for 6 at stumps, underpinned by a captain's innings form Andrew Strauss who will resume tomorow on 161 not out. Not too many times England have scored this many runs in one day, that's a strike rate of fractionally more than 4 an over and I'll definitely take that. Hoprfully Hauritz can bowl again today and clean up the tail before lunch. We'll have to wait and see.
TheZeppyWanderer
starting to get interesting now - England on top for a change, and Punter's face is a picture at times. Great entertainment. 2 questions - Can the Aussies avoid the follow on ? What will the weather do this time ?

Reggie29
I wouldn't rule out anything. Hopefully we can bat to avoid the follow on and get England out cheap. The weather is anyone's guess but one thing's for sure neither team wants rain. Still it's a big ask.

Well I have been told, and thanks for the English lesson. But you will LOOSE the Ashes, as you say we should win in our own country, yes when and if we win in Australia we can be thought of as being better. But whatever its great to see the Aussies squirm in this test match, to hear the Aussie pundits getting grumpy ,its very sweet as it hurts you more than us when you loose the Ashes. You have a very ordinary side this time and yes we should be beating you.
