Enjoy. http://www.archive.o...uid_selves_1992 This short computer animation depicts the upcoming struggle between the virtual and physical sides of our selves, where our bodies are left behind as technology enhances our ability to exist in virtual worlds. A collection of techniques were used to produce this animation. Particle systems were used to disassemble and reconstruct various images. Artificial evolution and interpolation of 3D parametric shapes allowed the creation of unusual surface transformations. Morphing techniques produced smooth transitions between faces, and various image processing, warping, and compositing techniques were also employed. Software and Animation by Karl Sims Music by Peter Gabriel and John Paul Jones Thanks to Lew Tucker, Jim Salem, Gary Oberbrunner, Matt Fitzgibbon, Dave Sheppard, David Marvit, Kleiser-Walczak, and Keith Waters Produced for "Memory Palace" and Art Futura '92 This piece was rendered on a Connection Machine CM-2 computer. Tony Meehan vividly recalls that particular audition. "It was held above the Roebuck Pub in Tottenham Court Road in London. We had a single called "Diamonds" at number one on the charts and we were putting together a band. John Paul heard about is and showed up. He was just out of school, very young and a bit nervous. Despite the nerves, he was a good musician and he knew his shit. He was cocky too in a certain way and I liked that. So we hired him. "He toured with us for a year or so until the band broke up." Undoubtedly the Meehan-Harris line-up was ahead of its time. The widely acclaimed John McLaughlin was on lead guitar, while the late Glen Hughes, who achieved prominence with Georgie Fame's Blue Flames, was blowing sax. "We were doing the sort of things which Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears came up with a few years later," Meehan claimed. "But we were booed off stage with some of it, the mainstream jazz things. Of course,that Jet Harris/Tony Meehan single "Diamonds" had also been one of the earliest studio sessions of a good future friend of JPJ, it featured Jimmy Page on rhythm guitar. The guy on the "Ballroom Dancing" clip doesn't look to me like him, and it's certainly not him on "Silly Love Songs." Any sharper eyes than mine out there? I saw the film at the theatre when it came out, but I was still Beatles-obsessed at the time and wouldn't have spotted the former Led Zep bassman. When I first hunted that clip down the bass player didn't seem to resemble him, but closer inspection shows it is indeed the former John Baldwin. Apparently the two go back to the Donovan days, when the then-Beatle dropped in on a session for I can't remember what tune and complimented the arrangment, which Mr. Leitch was hitherto going to ditch. What not a lot of people know is that Jonesy did an interview on RTE television that same week for an afternoon magazine show. I don't have a recording of it. It was only about ten minutes long. He spoke about being in Ireland when he was a teenager, touring with a band, playing bass (I think it might have been a family member's band). The interviewers were really nice to him and didn't ask too many fan-type Zep questions, if I recall correctly. It was just a brief hello with a polite and understated God of Rawk. Jonesy is so chilled out and wonderfully English - just the total opposite of what you'd expect rock stars to be. I remember thinking that they could've asked him loads of Zep questions but hey, it was just an afternoon show and you can't expect regular broadcasters to be as crazy about Zep as we are! Steve, The title was, I think, The Afternoon Show, with hosts Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy, both of whom are still with RTE. It was probably the day of the Dublin HQ gig. Naturally, I regret not recording it and if someone has a copy of it I would actually be quite surprised given the relatively small daytime audience. I'm going to ask on some Irish forums and ask if anyone in Ireland has got it. We'll see. Many thanks for that and my contacting the RTE archives is quite likely. I was really intrigued that he may have made a comment alluding to having toured (and/or performed) in Ireland prior to become a session player. I show he joined them in 1963 and was paid 30 quid a week. Perhaps there is someone in Ireland who can scour newspaper/magazine archives for Dublin and Belfast that year to see if any gigs were advertised. He did join his first band, The Deltas, at age 15 but I don't think they were a touring band or at least not likely to have performed outside of greater London. It also mentions The Tornados. Venue unknown. Link to archive search page, enter 'Jet Harris 1963' for results. I found no relevant results for Tony Meehan on the site. Tony Meehan started to recruit a backing band within days, so Jones was almost definitely a member by January 27th. The only caveat I would add is that the 1/27 show may have initially been booked as a "Jet Harris" solo show only, since "Diamonds" had not been released yet.
