McSeven Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 Which song do you like better? Why do they sound similar? I like them both equally. Does anyone know the history behind both songs. What do you consider the influnece of the songs, is it Jazzy/Psychedelic? I recently was surfing You tube and saw Traffic preform this song. It then occured to me that certain guitar licks were similar to Your time. Mc7 Quote
Aquamarine Posted August 5, 2009 Posted August 5, 2009 It hadn't occurred to me till now, but you're right, there are similarities--though I think coincidental ones, like Immigrant Song/Bali Hai. I think I like Dear Mr Fantasy marginally better , but I like them both. Quote
Gospel Zone Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I think the chord progression of "Mr. Fantasy" sounds sort of like the Stones "Sympathy For The Devil". Quote
ninelives Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I hear a very very vague similarity but as Aqua said, I think it's coincidental. Your Time Is Gonna Come to me has that feel good, summertime sound to it and Dear Mr. Fantasy is a bit more trippy. I like them both for different reasons but I'd probably say I favor Dear Mr. Fantasy a bit more. Quote
zosodude13 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I'll be the 3rd to say Dear Mr. Fantasy has a very trippy feel to it, compared to the somber sound of Your Time is Gonna Come. I know it's not LZ related, and its kinda weird to compare, but I feel like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys and "Revolution" by The Beatles have a very similar structure, even though the sound is totally different. Check it out once, but maybe you'll hear what I'm hearing. Quote

zosodude13 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 (edited) In a remote way I can see why you'd say that with the Beach Boys and the Beatles, but I can't really explain what it is. The one thing that seemed to make it connect was the rhythm of the lyrics were inter-changeable ----------------- "Wouldn't it be nice if we were older and we wouldn't have to wait so long" "You say you want a revolution, well, you know, we all want to change the world." and the parts "You know its gonna make it that much better when we can say goodnight and stay together" "But when you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out " (The music also seems to match a little closer here too...) I don't know where I'm going with this, but something clicks in my brain too Edited August 6, 2009 by zosodude13 Quote

Evster2012 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 YTIGC and Mr. Fantasy have a similar return in the chord progression. The last few notes right before "Lyin, cheatin, hurting" and and behind "all you seem". Rhythmically it's similar to the turnaround in Thank You right before the singing starts. I'm sure a little digging could tease that rather common musical resolve out of a few more Led Zeppelin songs. Quote
