barrios Posted August 20, 2009 Author Posted August 20, 2009 (edited) Billboard didn't publish that list. A michael jackson fan did. Where is the original link to the Billboard publication? I am skeptical. Thriller is claimed to have sold 72 million units, when in 2005, it was verified on 28 million? I find it hard to believe it sold 43 million in 3 years. This link to Billboard magazine dated 25 June 2009, still quotes 28 million, the same as the RIAA figure. See: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/genre/e3i07c5940218c277f49aebd0b970078ef5 thriller has sold 29 million in the us,well on it's way to 30 million, the figures are worldwide Edited August 20, 2009 by barrios Quote

Evster2012 Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 In America alone the RIAA stats read as: Artist Certified Units in Millions BEATLES, THE 170 BROOKS, GARTH 128 PRESLEY, ELVIS 120 LED ZEPPELIN 111.5 EAGLES 100 JOEL, BILLY 79.5 PINK FLOYD 74.5 STREISAND, BARBRA 71 AC/DC 71 JOHN, ELTON 70 STRAIT, GEORGE 68 AEROSMITH 66.5 ROLLING STONES, THE 66 SPRINGSTEEN, BRUCE 64 MADONNA 63.5 CAREY, MARIAH 62.5 JACKSON, MICHAEL 61.5 Now overseas of course is a whole different story. MisterMcLov1n Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Those numbers are either highly out-dated or just plain fake. Quote
Evster2012 Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 Which? The initial poster's or the RIAA? Quote
MisterMcLov1n Posted August 20, 2009 Posted August 20, 2009 The OP's. The highest-selling worldwide is Thriller. Although the placement is correct, the numbers are wrong. Here is the Wikipedia article. All placements have sources. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_worldwide Quote

All placements have sources. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_worldwide When you click on the wikipedia source for the Shania Twain album you get this: "Thriller" - Michael Jackson (60 million) "Black In Black" - AC/DC (42m) "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" - The Eagles (41m) "Saturday Night Fever" - (Soundtrack) (40m) "Dark Side Of The Moon" - Pink Floyd (40m) "Come On Over" - Shania Twain (39m) "The Bodyguard" - (Soundtrack) (37m) "Bat Out Of Hell" - Meat Loaf (37m) "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - The Beatles (32m) "Led Zeppelin IV" - Led Zeppelin (32m) It disagrees with other placings on that wikipedia list. You have an article with sources that disagree with each other. It looks as if the people adding the figures to the table are simply taking the maximum figures they can find and quoting it. That's not good science. Quote

SuperDave Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 Garth Brooks with 128 million sold. I know he sold a lot of albums during the 90's, but 128m. to LZ's 111m. seems far fetched. Quote
