Them Crooked Vultures vs Page and Plant

When Page/Plant came out with Walking into Clarksdale 11 yrs ago. I was really disappointed. To this day, the only song from that album that sticks with me is Most High.

TCV is absoulutley amazing. Its not Zeppelin 2.0, but it rocks hard. In fact John Paul Jones seems to have more Zeppelin in him than Page and Plant. A lot of songs have a Zep vibe to them. Reptiles/Elephants.

I hope that Page starts his own supergroup and comes out with something as dangerous as TCV.

Anyways what do you all think?

I am just saying who has come up with the better songs and music. When Page/Plant came out in the late 90's. There was no danger to their music. TCV has brought the danger back. Thats all I am saying. I feel that TCV are closer to the spirit of Zep than Page/Plant. It makes me look at JPJ with a different eye than I had before. JPJ influence on Zep is more stronger than I thought it was.

Whose songs and music are better? Everyone can have a different opinion.

And personally I don't need music to be "dangerous" to be appealing to me. Led Zeppelin is not only "dangerous", it can be very soft, it can be very poetic at different moments, so I'd say TCV is closer to one side of Led Zeppelin's many sides, while Page/Plant is closer to one another. And it's too hard to compare these two projects because they went into totally different directions, I guess it would be fairer to say which one is more "interesting" to you?

So much my thoughts.

Them Crooked Vultures does have more of a Zeppelin vibe to it than Page & Plant, & quite honestly so does JPJ's 2 solo albums in comparison to what Plant & Page have done seperately. JPJ's contribution STILL gets overlooked, on this site no less. Without JPJ, no "Black Dog", "MMH", "No Quarter", "In The Light", & most of ITTOD as far as the main song writing goes on top what he contributed to what Page mainly brought in or jam type songs. The lacking element of Walking Into Clarksdale was JPJ as far as I'm concerned. Before anyone jumps in with the "It wasn't a Zep album & that wasn't the intention of it blah, blah, blah..." routine, I'm quite aware of that. I'll take the weakest songs off of Zooma or Tidal over the best song off of Walking Into Clarksdale anyday.

Listen to "Crackback" on youtube from JPJ's "Scream For Help" soundtrack that Page co-wrote & played on. That's Them Crooked Vultures right there in 1985.

Kaiser. I have to agree with your assessment. I don't expect Robert and Jimmy to be exactly like Zep. On the other hand. TCV came off to me stronger. Its like they have a solid base. Page and Plant WIC came off as weak, and unfocused, except for Most High. There was too much rehashing of Kashmir and Arabic rhythms.

IF they can put out at least 4 more CD's. I think that they will make an impression.

To me, TCV came across as Zep with a Cream feel. If we needed someone to fill the void of Cream in the 2000's. Then TCV have done their job. There is no new Zeppelin at the moment. Soundgarden were the Zeppelin of the 90's.

I haven't even heard the whole album yet, just what I've gotten off of youtube, but what I've heard I think is great. What I like is that the power comes from the rhythm section which was something that was lacking on WIC, even though I liked Michael Lee as a drummer in a live situation. Also on WIC, I think that Page's hands were tied creatively, which I wont get into here due to the potential wolfpack waiting to pounce. Anyway, I'm picking up the album this week & plan on spending at least one full day with it.

As far Soundgarden the Zep of the 90's, have to disagree there. Jane's Addiction all the way on that one. Just put on "Three Days" or "Then She Did" & you're hearing updated Zep.

That's exactly what I thought when I listened to it! :D Scumbag Blues is pure Cream with a little Zep in it from Jonesy's keyboards. As far as comparing it to WIC, I thought that TCV was better as a whole album. The first half of WIC was good, but the second half, I thought, was a little weak. However, I think that Most High is better than any of the songs on TCV. So, both albums have their good points and bad points. Both albums create a different mood, and I can't really say that one is better than the other.
